WE GOT IT !!!

Thanks u Man, after checking ure Log and ure Firmware I was able to reproduce RGB 4k@120hz 10B after flashing Firmware (6.05.120) to an VMM6100 Cable Matters 201388 Adapter.

Its connected over 4L10 so it looks like it can use 40 Gbits to reach RGB 4k@120hz 10B!

Finally we got it ! I will report Cable Matters Support about this.

I think this solution can also been use for M2 Apple Silicon as well!

U have to override with custom EDID and change some times the frequent between 30hz-120hz. Then it will Sync with RGB 4k@120hz 10B.

Firmware is Attached and will work with Adapter Cable Matters 201388 when it has an Chip VMM6100.
(Till now we dont know if this Firmware will also work with other Brand with VMM6100!)

Can also inform that it also work when its connected to an TB4 Dock, so its also possible to get an 1 Cable solution !!

Adapter:

Amazing work!

Used your firmware on my CM VMM6100 and got 4k@120 10Bit with my previous edited EDID.

Thanks to everyone involved!

So my current Usb-c to Hdmi 2.1 cable (NOT the Anker or CM adapters, haven't received them yet) gives me this info... same chip as Anker? As in: could I try the custom FW on this one @AironMan ? Would make a backup of my current FW first...

Edit: how do I flash the bin file? The flash section takes fullrom files

OK I apparently just killed my HDMI 2.1 cable... provided FW doesn't show output/display in Windows anymore and trying to run back my backed-up FW results in an error message in the VmmDPTool upon completing. Ah well, you win some, you lose some...

Wow wow wow, I have nothing more to add other than to say a huge thank you for the massive effort from everyone involved! I've been lurking this thread ever since the M1 Pro/Max MBPs came out and I can't believe you guys actually did it! Another success here!

For others looking to replicate, I'm using Cable Matters ver 201388 USB-C to HDMI 2.1 48 GBps adapter + UGREEN HDMI 2.1 Certified Cable. Followed the advice on this thread, flashed the custom .fullrom provided by @AironMan here for VMM6100 chips (and here for VMM7100 chips) using the Cable Matters Firmware Tool (VmmDPTool.exe), and finally followed the custom EDID instructions according to the reddit thread. It will require BetterDisplay Pro, but the cost of the upgrade sure beats a new TV or monitor!

Side note: Both my work laptop (X1 Thinkpad) and my desktop failed to open the VmmDPTool due to "Cannot find Synaptics MST DP hub IC" error, this is with the adapter connected to the pc and HDMI to the monitor. Ended up using my Steam Deck with windows 11 and it worked. Worth trying a different PC if you encounter this.

Confirming that HDR is also working with 4:4:4 10Bit:

Been more than a year since I've been able to use MacOS with that buttery 120hz and the OLED tv, once again thank you guys for the hard work!

Nice, congratz man. So I guess the uploaded *.bin files are only personal modified EDID files not to be used at all? Sorry, trying to wrap my head around this, I just busted up a USB-C to HMDI cable trying to flash it haha...

@Technotron
I had same experience. VmmDPTool.exe does not seem to backup (custom) fullrom correctly.

Anyway, is there still any chances for VMM7100 cable with RGB 10bit?

@Technotron
Mine was Belkin cable with VMM7100, I think it was not listed.

After I broke my belkin cable, I also purchased a Cable Matters 201362-A with VMM7100.
I hope RGB 10bit solution will be realized as well as VMM6100.
Another 5000-6000JPY for a VMM6100 adapter is gonna a bit expensive for me.🤑

any suggestions on how to run the firmware update for the cablemasters adapter?
I have a pc with a type c port on the motherboard, it doesnt work.
I have a windows laptop with a type c port, it doesnt work.

I'm getting "Can not find Synaptics MST DP hub IC" error.

the requirements for this updater seems a bit excessive.

on base mb air m1 with lg42c2 i was able to get 4k120hz. Tried two ways to connect it.
1. With displayMatter hdmi 2.1 to type c cable. It didnt work out, mac just turns screen mirroring when i try to enable 120hz.
2. ugreen hdmi 2.1 2m cable + displayMatter hdmi 2.1 to type c adapter. I have got 4k120hz, works good but 4.2.2 sucks, it doesn't worth it, text looks ******, i will stay with 4k60hz 4.4.4 rgb.

Planning to buy MBP MAX 16 32ram/1tb ssd. In my country the m1 is $3000 and the m2 is $3800. I'm not sure if these 120 hz are worth $800.

PS was on page 31 when I wrote this, will try to update firmware soon to get 10b rgb

has anyone tried it using “foldable” Cable Matters adapter? Looks to have same specs as 201388 but it’s compact and much cheaper.

Cable Matters [Designed for Portability] 8K USB C to HDMI 2.1 Adapter with 4K 120Hz and 8K 60Hz HDR, HDCP 2.3, Foldable HDMI to USB C Adapter, Thunderbolt 4 Compatible, Max Res. on MacBook is 4K 60Hz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B72B3V8L?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_PMG2W2WSKT7V3DAJWZM9

You need to have it connected to a display as well

Thanks!

There are some Missinformation here.

An EDID override can be done with BetterDisplay and do not need a custom EDID from another one. It only need to enable DP-Tranportstream in your own EDID.

Look at this posts:

VMM7100 with Anker 8k Adapter can be upgraded with a Special Firmware to getting 4k@120hz 8b 4:4:4 connected over 4L8. (This Firmware does also include an EDID override inside the Firmware. So no BetterDisplay EDID override needed here!)

Look at this post:

An VMM6100 Cable Matters can be upgraded with a Special Firmware to 4k@120hz RGB4:4:4 10b HDR connected over 4L10 (Which is better!)

Look at this post:

Another Adapter with other Brand but same Chip probably can also been upgraded, but no guarantee for that! I can only guarantee that this Adapters I postet will work, it has been confirmed since iam releasing this solution from different users.

And plz have in Mind, u need a certified HDMI 2.1 48 Gbps Cable like this and do not go over 2M. Best when u use less than 2M.

Theres also an 64bit Firmware Flasher available. The Adapter has to been connected to an Monitor and an Windows PC to work correctly!

Get reply vom Cable Matters:

"However, since the VMM6100 chipset is discontinued, we are unable to obtain the firmware you required from the supplier. We’ll investigate why the 4K@120Hz RGB 10bit HDR works with the VMM6100 and the Firmware u send."

Sounds promising! Hopefully they will be able to produce a new revision of their adapter which does 4K120 4L10 over HDMI right out of the box (with EDID override, etc.)

Everyone is basically doing free research for Cable Matters 😂 but yeah let’s hope something good comes out of this

Yeah but Cable Matters are the only one where talk with me about this and work with me to get a solution ! The other Manufactures even do not answer after a few mails anymore! So if someone can do that, it will be CableMatters. There Support was really professional!

Absolutely! I was just kidding and for a company to actually exchange ideas and reply is pretty awesome :)

Opportunity recognizes opportunity, basically. And this goes both way :)

This is amazing guys! Had to install Windows 10 to an external SSD just to flash my adapter and it just works! Thanks so much! :apple::apple:

@dinosauradventure - if you make a change in the EDID that affects the available refresh rates for the to-be-used resolution, then until the EDID is applied by BD, the OS will use the previous EDID and change to the lower refresh rate. This changes the resolution mode stored for the display layout associated to the display (the resolution will "reset" every time). To prevent this, you need to change the product id or serial number of the new EDID so the new resolution modes are associated to a different display (your display's second identity in this case) in macOS so when the EDID override kicks in, the proper mode is selected as the new display layout is loaded. I think there is a post earlier somewhere where I explained this in more depth.
Thanks for explaining again as it helped me understand better! Changing the serial # in the EDID fixed the issue of resolution/refresh rate resetting after sleep for me.

Sometimes I get a black or grey screen when trying to wake from sleep, however. Have to unplug and reconnect the adapter, open the lid to get things going again. I am using an HDMI 2.1 cable that came with the PS5, will test some with some other cables. Maybe it's something CableMatters could look into also.

I'm guessing you didn't do this on an m1 mac?
I tried parallels on my m1 mbp, but the updater didnt even start. ("Failed to init gpu library" - It was worth a shot )

As far as I can tell, you need a DP-Alt capable type-c port equipped device that can run windows.
My next option is to find some local tech / IT shop that might have such a device AND is willing to help me.
( or order one, use it to update and send back, but I really don't want this hassle )
