Which Mac are you using? M2?Holy crap never thought I'd see the day... literally been keeping an eye on this thread for a year and half!
- LG CX 48"
- Got the anker 518 USB-c connector
- Connected it to a windows laptop & connected to display
- Flashed custom firmware
- Connected it to my mac
- Go into display settings, select 60hz, then select 120hz
- Succes!!! 4k 120, 4:4:4, be it 8 bit only.

Couldn't get the CableMatters VMM6100 4:4:4, only 4:2:2...
Now just for someone to figure out 10 bit HDR on the 7100...
No, M1 Macbook pro 16", edited the post now.Which Mac are you using? M2?
hdmi 2.1 port is exclusive for m2 pro and m2 max but not available for m2. Apple advertises that HDMI 2.1 port comes with m2 pro and M2 max can output 4k 240hz. If it is true, such HDMI 2.1 port should have DSC feature, which is not available in thunderbolt 3/4 to HDMI 2.1 in our m1 series and m2 devices. Without DSC, even full HDMI 2.1 (48gbps) cannot have enough bandwidth to output 4k 240hz.Does anybody knows what are advantages of using m2 hdmi 2.1 port over this method? Is it absolutely the same?
You can see laterer posts in the thread. 4K 120hz RGB 10b is feasible now. We don't have to choose just either of themInteresting. I have never achieved 10 bit so far on my c2, but would you prefer 10bit color or 120hz?
I’m mostly using it for desk work and 120hz is nice, but honestly 60hz is fine if the colors are that much better?
10bit vs 8bit doesn’t have anything to do with text clarity right? It’s just the chroma sub sampling that’s important, i.e. 444?
I just want to sincerely deliver my gratitude to all of you who have made this really happen. Long before I signed up an account here, I noticed this tread. And I periodically visited here and wish there would be some breakthrough. I can always see how hard you and others work on this issue through this thread. And I have learned a lot here. The last time I thought we might have hope was when I saw Apple release HDMI 2.1 port with m2 pro and m2 max. And I visited this thread again and was happy to find that you and others have noticed this earlier than me. After that, I visit this thread almost everyday. Though I have lived with the video output spec for a day, the achievement of 4k 120 RGB 10bit is still too good to be true for me now. It is amazing. Thanks Man ! It was really Hard work to figure this out, also this was never happened when @stevemr123 not get us EDID override functionality with BetterDisplay. Also big thanks to @Alan Spiegel and @hPandaa1 to assist in getting more details information from his Adapter chip and Firmware ! Also thanks to @joevt for his detailed information in Specifications etc. It's a work where we all have work hard for. Iam really happy now ! M1 and M2 user will profit from that ! No need to buy an expensive M2 only for HDMI 2.1 (only over HDMI Port possible) !
Pretty sure billboard is 6100 with the cable matters adapter. The cable matters cable is the 7100My results with "Billboard" version of the CableMatters adapter without performing a firmware update, but did perform the EDID update, got 120hz 422 HDR on LG CX. Hopefully can get that to 444 post the firmware update and be good to go.
Does anyone know if the Billboard version can use the update for the VMM6100 that got this working?
I'm kinda confused on what you're trying to do when your Mac Mini M2 Pro already has HDMI 2.1 built in, negating the need for these adapters. Are you trying to run 2 HDMI 2.1 screens at the same time?I have a 2023 Mac mini M2 Pro, and the Cable Matters 4K USB-C > HDMI cable just failed me (HDR only works on Windows PC's, not Mac's).
I'm looking for a solution that requires NO EDID editing, just regular plug-and-play use. I'll be using it for 4K60 with HDR right now... but DO want to buy a future proof one for 4K120+ w/ HDR as well.
What is the recommended USB-C/USB4/TB3-4 to HDMI adapter? HAS to end with HDMI so I can run it through my Denon AVR receiver (which then goes to my Hisense 4K120 75U8H TV/monitor).
People say the Belkin on apple's site is good, but it's only 4K60... Just found this Belkin on Amazon which says it's 8K60/4K144 with HDR, but nearly no reviews, and nothing on google... Good choice, or what else should I look at?
You need to plug the other end into an active monitorFriends, where do I get access to a windows machine to do firmware update? I’m at a loss
my work pc has usbc front port but display with anker adapter doesn’t work (no igpu?).
I can also confirm this worked on my 6100 Cable Matters adapter, thank you! I get also 4k@120hz RGB 10b 4L10 <3WE GOT IT !!!
Thanks u Man, after checking ure Log and ure Firmware I was able to reproduce RGB 4k@120hz 10B after flashing Firmware (6.05.120) to an VMM6100 Cable Matters 201388 Adapter.
Its connected over 4L10 so it looks like it can use 40 Gbits to reach RGB 4k@120hz 10B!
Finally we got it ! I will report Cable Matters Support about this.
I think this solution can also been use for M2 Apple Silicon as well!
U have to override with custom EDID and change some times the frequent between 30hz-120hz. Then it will Sync with RGB 4k@120hz 10B.
Firmware is Attached and will work with Adapter Cable Matters 201388 when it has an Chip VMM6100.
(Till now we dont know if this Firmware will also work with other Brand with VMM6100!)
Can also inform that it also work when its connected to an TB4 Dock, so its also possible to get an 1 Cable solution !!

Yes, I would like the option to use a second screen at some point, but more so it's this: over the years I've been tracking a series of issues, it seems like people have had WAY less issues with USB-C/TB output (going to either USB-C, DisplayPort, HDMI, whatever) - it fixes some of the issues where all colors are muted, gray-ish, and washed-out. I'm getting similar (kinda) issues on 8x different external monitors where I turn HDR on and EVERYTHING ELSE (like every. single. program on the entire computer, except the HDR-compatible movie player) is washed out, and colors shift, and white isn't even close to white anymore:I'm kinda confused on what you're trying to do when your Mac Mini M2 Pro already has HDMI 2.1 built in, negating the need for these adapters. a regular usb c port is not enough. it needs to be DP-alt capable.Friends, where do I get access to a windows machine to do firmware update? I’m at a loss

You need to connect the adapter to a monitor first. The IC that it can't find (your error message) is in the adapterAsked my friend with windows and type c port to run vmm tool, he get this. Do i need to plug in adapter first to make it work? Who can try to open thistool without connected device?

I've had a similar experience where using displayport from mac causes hdr to have very undersaturated colours, but if i plug the hdmi in colours are correct, i've tested this from both my mac mini and my ipad pro with usb-c to dp and usb-c to usb-c, i also tested my ipad pro on my friend's hdr monitor with usb-c to dp, colours look off. At least for me, there is some kind of issue with hdr on mac/ipad when using displayport. Displayport picture from windows pc on the same monitors looked just fine and no different than if i used the hdmi ports. I know my samplesize is only two but this feels odd still.Yes, I would like the option to use a second screen at some point, but more so it's this: over the years I've been tracking a series of issues, it seems like people have had WAY less issues with USB-C/TB output (going to either USB-C, DisplayPort, HDMI, whatever) - it fixes some of the issues where all colors are muted, gray-ish, and washed-out. ...so I want to try a USB-C to HDMI adapter and see if it helps... just can't find which one will do 4K60 WITH HDR. And figured if I'm getting one of those, might as well get one which can do 120hz (which this topic is about), so thought I would ask here for a recommendation.
