So I put the gt 120 back on the mac pro but this time I didn't connect the DVI cable to the monitor as before, but I used the output with the minidisplay vs hdmi adapter cable and in fact I see the apple load on the monitor and by clicking ALT I see the disk with windows 7 and the original installation dvd, then I choose mac os x install disk 1 and see the apple that loads and after a few minutes the attached message 2 comes out.

so what could be the problem?

if I insert the usb created with transmac and windows 10 of el capitan it is not even seen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However this means that the gt120 works fine then!
The 2 installation dvds are too old for the gt120, so do you recommend?

However, they advised me to go to an apple assistance and get me to make an ssd with el capitan installed which then put it in my mac pro 2008, and it must work for sure.
Otherwise another solution would be to buy this USB which works for sure to install el capitan.

Through the serial number of my mac pro I was able to understand the specifications of my mac

so the original GPU was an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT

and not a gt120 that's why the installation dvds are not read, but in your opinion it is better to take this gpu hd2600 used so that it reads the original dvds or take the USB bootable el capitan directly?

thank you.

My recommendation to buy a GT120 is because it supports all Mac OS from 10.5.6 up to High Sierra.
It's not necessary to install extra drivers and it provides a bootscreen.

This is IMO the easiest and cheapest option to get a Mac OS installed on your MP.
When you got High Sierra installed, you can download the Nvidia drivers for the GTX960 and switch the GPUs.

The HD2600XT is not compatible with OS newer than El Capitan, so the OS upgrade process would be much more complicated.
Besides the HD2600 Mac Version prices are igual or even higher than for the GT120 (and performance is inferior).

So, I recommend to buy this USB with El Capitan (post #52) and install El Capitan first.
It's also wise to install the Mac OS on another HDD/SSD with a GUID partition and formatted to HFS+ ,and not on the same disk with Windows making partitions.

Exactly!
Note that you install the Nvidia drivers for the exact version of High Sierra and before you install the GTX960.

NOTHING to do I phoned and wrote emails to all the apple assistance in my city and province, and they all refuse to make me an ssd with el capitan, according to them the mac pro 2008 is obsolete so they never take it and el capitan cannot be found more available the dmg, so NADA !!!!!!!!!!

According to them I have to throw the mac pro in the ferrous special waste and get a new mac.

However I found on Amazon a bootable USB el capitan for 15 euros I asked the seller for info giving the serial number of my mac pro and he replies that his usb works on my mac pro for sure, so I placed the order, between 3 days I receive it and then I try.

You asked an Apple service center..
Well, in their eyes, ”we” - (and with “we” I mean enthusiasts that prolong products usage above its normal intended life-cycle) are the revolting terrorists that hurt their business model. You see, in their industrial pipe dream, “They“ control how long you will be permitted to use their product. Because of that, they design all new consumer products with that exact mindset, with the exception of the new Mac Pro. This also explains why the new 2019 MP is so extraordinary expensive. You basically pay a punishment fee that is priced in, to deminish their control compared to a consumer product that is otherwise filled to the brim with controlled product obsoletience Features. It’s called a walled garden, and with APple silicone they put the last nail in that coffin.
The fight you and me experience here is fully intended. They want to force you to by new and as often as possible, which is why you experience so manny obstacles. Keep it up my friend, there is no bigger middle finger for Apple than a fully usable, working Mac Pro 2008 in the New-World-Order-Year of 2021.

Excellent news !
Good you managed to get along all obstacles, bravo!

After installing El Capitan :
1. update El Capitan to latest version
2. download+ install High Sierra dosdude patcher
3. when all installed and works go to :
About this Mac > system information > software and look for the exact version number of the High Sierra installed.
I attached a screenshot as an example , so you'll see where to look for the number ( in my case: 18G8022 yours will be 17Gxxxxxx or so ).

Look for the correct version number here and install it:

After reboot you can see if the Nvidia driver is installed and working.
When it works , remove the GT120 (and keep it save for all kinds of scenarios) and install the GTX 960 and ...
enjoy!

Well finally I managed to install high sierra on my mac pro 2008, everything works smoothly and the USB el capitan from Amazon has yet to arrive, now useless since I have already done so, never mind I spent 15 euros.

I'm glad I did it thanks to everyone.

Yes, i would update to the latest version.
I dont know if you installed the "software update patch" , this is the dosdude tutorial :

Apart from that , i would install the GT120 to do the update , and when its updated, you can update the Nvidia driver (in system preferences).
After updating the Nvidia driver succesfully , you can install the GTX960 again.

High Sierra 10.13.6 is the latest version, so there will be no more casino updating in the future ;)

Excuse me a question, but if I have to install any update I have to do it with the indicated patch, or can I also do it directly from the apple store?
thank you.

Dont Update it through Apple. Usually, if you work with the patch, you do always choose the very last version of that desired OSX system, therefor there is never a need to Update, except you do a Full jump onto a newer OSX. In case you have installed a middle of the Road OSX, completely ignore the update feature Or make a new install with the very last OSX iteration of that desired OSX

Yes it will work but:
- only PCIe slot 1 and 2 are 2.0x16 , slot 3 and 4 are x4 = very slow=no I/O speed improvement compared to the SATA bays
So with the GPU in slot 1, you'll have to put the Accelsior S in slot 2 (directly above the GPU)
- the SSD will be seen as external by the OS
- even installed in slot 2, speed improvement is in real life hardly noticeable and IMO not worth the cost
