Article yesterday (May 9th) in the South China Post: Shenzhen factories keep running at full capacity despite Covid-19 disruptions

I've linked Yahoo's reprint because the South China Post is behind a paywall.

The article says this about Foxconn:

Many factories in Shenzhen are located in walled-off compounds in industrial areas. Larger players like Foxconn Technology Group, the Taiwanese electronics giant that assembles iPhones, have their own campuses that make it even quicker to implement a closed-loop system.
However, Apple said during its Q2 earnings call on April 28th that there were significant production delays at Shenzhen.
"Closed Loop" systems are not that popular, though, at least in Shanghai ... Apple plant clash

In my experience, Business Insider tends not to be a very reliable source. That article is cribbed from more informative Reuters and Bloomberg originals. The issue was apparently fear of coronavirus contagion from within the loop at a Quanta facility, one of the companies that does work for Apple and Tesla. From Reuters:

Videos posted online showed more than a hundred Quanta workers physically overwhelming security guards in hazmat suits and vaulting over factory gates to escape being trapped inside the factory amid rumours that workers on the floor that day tested positive for COVID.

This episode is mostly a comment on China's policies on controlling coronavirus and on the impact if someone tests positive or is in close proximity to someone who does.

Bloomberg: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-china-plant-clash-with-guards-over-lockdowns

For those who don't have access to Bloomberg US (free article limit exceeded), this Bloomberg Canada link may work: https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/workers-at-apple-china-plant-clash-with-guards-over-lockdowns-1.1762020

Looks like we’re in a similar position. Identical config, similar order dates: my card was charged yesterday but still processing.

My credit card charge was made over the phone because of a payment method issue that Apple advised me of via e-mail this morning. It's possible that the charge would have been made yesterday were that unnecessary.

I'm the second person in the last week or so who ran into a payment method problem because I was unable to edit my payment method for the order. I had updated the payment information for my Apple account, but Apple does not automatically use the new method. I had to phone Apple to tell them to use it.

Looking forward now to an earlier delivery window :)

Well, this is great news, congrats!
I ordered a day or so before with the same config so I might see an update very soon.

EDIT: I spoke too soon, I have been charged! I just hadn't looked at pending charges on my card!

Just to caution pending != charged.

My order for a Max 10/32/16 64gb/1tb had a pending charge last week and the pending dropped off yesterday with no movement.

Order was placed 3/23 for original delivery window of Jun 10th - June 24th.

Now sitting in the 22-29th window with no progress.

Good to be aware of that, hard to know what your on/off credit card charge means. Hopefully on again soon.

I do think it's likely that the group of us with the revised ~June 22-29 delivery window are going to get our new computers by the end of this month, which is three weeks today :)

I suspect they put a hold on the card as they start the BTO to ensure the funds are available and then charge when it actually ships. I'm kinda hoping to get an actual charge in the next day or two.

Still debating if I should buy Max or Ultra. Max with more storage?
Depends on your use case -

Video - more cores is king - if you're doing it professionally time is money.

Photography - Honestly, I don't think the extra cores are worth the extra cash - and I've an external SSD RAID for storage - I did up the memory and GPU cores as manipulating multi-frame Pano's from my Fuji medium format camera can eat memory.

What are you doing with it? I ordered the Ultra. While the Max is perfectly fine (amazing, in fact), I am a professional content creator and am working on several videos at any given time, mostly in Final Cut and often with 10bit or 120fps footage - so for me, I wanted the Ultra to minimize any beach balling. I don't really care about render times, but the timeline workflow is very important to me and I hate when a heavy timeline bogs down. I have larger freelance clients and I edit for several YouTubers, so it's important to me to be as efficient as possible.

I did Ultra, 48 GPU cores, 64GB of RAM and a 2TB drive. 1TB would have been totally fine but I chose 2 just because. All of my work media is stored externally, so it really doesn't matter what size the boot drive is.
I did want the front TB4 ports that the Ultra provides, too. The Max is just USB-C (which is also totally fine for 99% of scenarios).
I could be just fine with a Max (and sometimes I wish I had gone that way, just because I'd probably have it by now) but since this is my job, I went for the Ultra.

I feel like the ultra is probably a lot for me. I'm a teacher, so most of the time I use the computer for planning lessons, grading, etc. Photography is a hobby, so I do use Photoshop frequently. Sometimes I like to edit my home videos recorded with the Panasonic S5, so I use Adobe Premiere Pro. From time to time I use Topaz Video Enhance AI or Gigapixel to upscale music videos and cartoons. All the creative stuff is just a hobby.

As it´s 9 weeks now and hardly any ultras around you might be right ... anyway - the ultra will last longer as performance demand will grow infinitely.

I had a base Max for two weeks. I have an upgraded Max on order, but for reasons that have nothing to do with your use case. I think that a base Max will serve you very well. The main question is whether internal 512GB storage works for you, or whether you want more storage. I think that 24 core graphics and 32GB memory is plenty.

Honestly the Max is fine for that IMHO - I'm in a similar boat.

I ordered March 31 with the same config but I financed it with my Apple Card. The initial charge from the 31st is still pending and I’ve seen no additional charges. I’m still in processing on the store page.

My guess is since mine is financed, they don’t need to do the interim pending checks. I’m hopeful to see movement based on others with similar specs/ordering windows.

I think Best Buy has the base Max, but I would want at least 2tb for all the music videos. The prores music videos are around 6gb for HD or 16gb for 4k.

What do you use?

Happy to say that my Apple Studio Max arrived today - well ahead of Apple’s initial estimate of 1st half of June.
Studio Display still pending though, so I’m having to set it up with this 7” hdmi screen I had lying around. Once It’s set up I’ll use Remote Desktop from the old iMac but now I’m going to be doing a lot of squinting.

Haven’t had time to clean / declutter the desk, so trigger warning for the photo :)

So far, I can’t hear any fan noise from the Studio. But more than half those drive icons are HDDs sitting just off to the right of the pic, so it would need to be incredibly loud to compete with the dust clogged fans in all of those.

Wonder if I'll have to locate a CRT Green Screen while I wait for my Display to arrive. :)
