I can only conclude that the problem is the nvme drive.

I have an early 2015 13" running the same bootrom with an Intel 600p without panic problems. Hibernation also works properly.

Thanks for the help! How does the Intel 600p affect battery life when compared to the device's original ssd?

Also, I noticed that when I reinstalled the original 128gb SanDisk ssd that came with my MBA, it showed up as NVMe in system information. I don't remember how is was listed before the first time I removed it, but is it supposed to be listed under NVMe or SATA Express?

Yes, the Intel 600p causes higher battery drain. Is about 10% to 15% worse than the stock which is fine with me.

My original air SSD, which I still have, shows up under sata in system report. I thought all MBAs used Ahci drives.

Problem with SSD upgrade.

2017 MacBook Air. Using the small sintech adapter and a Samsung 970 evo

Install went smooth but disk utility does NOT recognize drive. Tried reseating half a dozen times and same result.

Am I missing something or bad adapter/drive?

Was the MBA running the latest HS or Mojave bootrom?

Are you using a HS or Mojave USB installer?

So I think I’m going to go with the ADATA XPG SX8200 PRO as it is readily available new from amazon for quite cheap.

As for original drives, I also thought that they were all SATA. Weird... It didn’t seem to cause any problems though so oh well.

Good luck with the upgrade. Please report back with the results.

Was running Mojave before hand fully updated.

I think I missed the part of the USB installer. How do I go about that?
Try doing an internet recovery.

Can’t do internet recovery. Loads up but does not see destination drive. Also can not use disk utility to format since none is detected.

Make sure View -> Show All Devices is selected for Disk Utility. Otherwise you might have a bad Sintech adapter, or the wrong version. I installed a 970 EVO with the Sintech adapter from Amazon with no problems at all on my 2017 MacBook Air. I also used a USB thumb drive to install Mojave afterwards.

Adapter looks fine and doesn't need to have kapton tape applied.

Any way to test the drive in another machine?

No one local to me uses this kind of drive unfortunately. I am just seeing if I missed something important, before I put blame on drive or the adapter.

I do not see the option of show all devices. I know it’s a box in the left hand corner, but is absent when loading from scratch.

Made a fresh USB install on a new stick, and magically Disk Utility shows up with Samsung drive showing. Installing as we speak.

Great news :) The disk utility from a HS or Mojave installer is needed to "see" the disk.

UPDATE: My ADATA XPG XS8200 PRO arrived yesterday and so far the results have been mixed. Installing Mojave off my usb installer and restoring from time machine worked fine. Read and write speeds were also good at 1400MB/s and 1000MB/s respectively. So far I haven't experienced any crashes or kernel panics, even after leaving my MBA sleeping overnight.

I was hoping with all the other reports of great battery life using this SSD that it would do as well as the original SSD, but that hasn't been the case so far. I even installed windows using bootcamp and a usb installer I made on my pc (bootcamp wasn't able to create the usb installer for some reason) to make sure the ADATA SSD firmware was up to date, but I couldn't find a newer version with ADATA's SSD Toolbox. Any advice would be much appreciated.

For reference I'm using 11" early 2015 MBA and this sintech adapter https://www.amazon.com/Sintech-Adap...me+ssd+adapter+card+upgrade+2013-2015+macbook

Spotlight is probably still indexing your new drive. Give it a day to finish, don't put the system to sleep at all, and then see how the battery life is.

I noticed when I restart the system and open spotlight, it says "indexing" but after a few minutes it goes away. Does that not mean it's finished indexing?

It could be. You can check in Activity Monitor, make sure All Processes is selected under the View menu. Check for "mdworker" process to see if it is active and/or using a high amount of CPU %.

I checked out "mdworker" in Activity Monitor and it said that the "energy impact" was 0. Actually, now it's not even running and battery life estimate still seems very short (less than 4 hours from 93%).

Another factor could be the higher temperature the new SSD drive runs at, especially under load. I know my 970 EVO runs hotter than the stock drive and that contributes to the reduced battery time.

What bootrom version do you have?

Don't know if it is right but this what I find ( sorry my MBA is in French ):

Version de la ROM de démarrage : 182.0.0.0.0

Version SMC (système) : 2.27f2

Do you think I have Firmware issues ?
