Ive had the same issue since the previous update on my MacBook 13 2017 which is exactly a year old.. Took it to Apple Store and they ran a boatload of test, including graphic card, etc and everything came up normal, running perfect. Im really hoping the new update w Mojave will take care of this sleep/wake static, snow issue. The only way I think to get heard and make wave is if one of these social media, websites like 9to5 Mac or Verge picks it up.

Add another one to the list with my MacBook Pro 13" 2017. I was afraid it was going to be another hardware failure, but the sentiment I get from reading the whole thread is that it should be a software one.

And another one. MBP w/o Touch Bar 2017 late December purchase the issue only started after upgrading to HS10.13.6

@Painter2002 agree we all need to more vocal this is what me convinced to sign up and leave my reply here. Very frustrating especially even more after reading through this thread. Let's get this fixed, on to 10+ pages of comments...

Macbook 12 inch 2017 (purchased April 2018) doing the same for me. Not a big issue but hoping that a software update sorts it otherwise will have to take it in to Apple.

So I posted on here about a week ago that when I was trying out the Mojave beta for a week, the static is gone and not there, which was also confirmed by another user. It looks like that while High Sierra wasn’t fixed, Mojave will be. at this point there is no reason to expect this to be a hardware issue, but rather a software bug, and the engineering department “captured” individuals machines (including mine) to help identify the issue within the MacOS.

Of course this isn’t an official statement from Apple, but I can tell you that in my experience of the Mojave beta, the issue has been corrected.
Are you still not experiencing any issues with Mojave? Maybe I will give the beta a shot. Mine stopped for weeks with high sierra 10.13.6 which led me to believe maybe it was fixed, but sure enough it came back again.

Unfortunately I went back to High Sierra after a few weeks, since I needed to make sure everything worked, but during the 2 1/2 weeks that I had it installed on my machine I never once experienced the static.

If you are looking to try the beta, you can, just be warned I have heard it has gotten a little buggy since the first public beta release. I personally am just going to live with it for one more month n half til the final release comes out in September, assuming of course Apple sticks with their usual MacOS and iOS release schedule of previous years.

Gotcha. And just to clarify, now that you’ve gone back to HS 10.13.6 you are experiencing the issue again?

*Update. So I went into Apple last week. They did a diagnostic and once again there were 2 sensor errors again that pointed to the logic board. But the technician came back and told me his leader told them there was nothing they could do because it was a software issue. The engineers were already working on it and he even showed me a picture as proof. I told him fine but I am worried about the diagnostic issues that still keep showing this. The tech said that they were just "false Positives" because they already replaced the logic board and flash storage & this software issue was causing these "false" reads. This has me worried. I don't mind that it is a software issue but I never heard of a software issue causing hardware "false positives"

can confirm, i also had the same issue with the diagnostics sensor (two sensors failed, both are CPU based), and the AppleCare rep told me the same reply. looks like its very much a software issue. hopefully it got fixed fast.

Hello All,

UPDATE: Hello everyone, this will serve as a final update to the issue below that I posted.

After working with AppleCare and engineering, they wanted to use my device and send me (another) replacement to identify the issue. From what I was told, this appears to be an issue with the OS, and engineering is aware of the issue. Here’s hoping the next update fixes the issue.

Thank you all for your comments below, it helped relieve stress knowing it wasn’t just me with the issue!

——————————————————

I just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro 13" w/Touchbar (Mid 2017) from Apple, and am running the most recent macOS to-date (High Sierra 10.13.4). When I lift the screen to wake the computer after a long sleep cycle (say leave it asleep overnight, on battery power), it intermittently has this issue where it displays a grey and white " static, like an old tv without antenna reception, for about 1 second, before going to the log-in screen. It does not do this on short sleep cycles, and I do not have any external monitors or eGPUs connected to it.

Also, sometimes on boot up the apple logo glitches and shows red for a second, before going back to normal. I have already reset NVRAM and SMC, and even reinstalled macOS High Sierra.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue on newer MacBooks, or have any suggestions on what this may be?

UPDATE: So as an update to all of this, I returned the MacBook to apple and received a replacement, and low and behold the new computer I received has the same issue! After long sleeps it has a snow/static on waking the computer up, with no externals plugged in, and with a fresh install of MacOS (no personal applications installed, all stock).

I have been in contact with AppleCare, and they have sent this issue up to Engineering. I am awaiting a response as to if this is "typical" of the newest software update, of is a sign of a bigger, more serious hardware issue. As soon as I get an update from Apple, I will add details to this post.

If you have this issue, report it to Apple! If it is a software issue, the more they are alerted of the issue the faster we will see a fix.

This is happening to my macbook pro too!

[doublepost=1533710852][/doublepost]I have this issue as well, even with short sleeps (5 minutes even). For someone who rarely contacts apple, should I call or go into a shop?

Yes, it's different. Sometimes i have it 3 times a day after 5 minutes sleep or so. And sometimes it doens't give the static screen for 3 days even when i let my macbook sleep for more hours. Really weird. Hoping that Mojave will fix this problem.

I also have this problem. I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13 with the latest HS and after any kind of sleep I get the static screen. I contacted Apple and they had me do some button pushing but it didn't do anything to solve the problem. Anyway, from the looks of this thread its a software issue and all I can do is wait for it to get fixed. When does Mojave get released?

There is no official release date yet other than it will come out in “Fall”. If Apple sticks to their routine of the recent years, I’d expect the final public version of Mojave will come out late September (usually a week after their September iPhone announcements).

I’d try to capture a video of it if possible, and contact Apple via phone if you want to. The store may or may not have any knowledge of the issue, and may incorrectly advise repairs that aren’t necessary.

From what I and others have experienced, Apple senior advisors are saying this is an issue with the MacOS itself and that engineering is actively working to fix this. I am waiting til then to raise any more questions/issues with Apple customer service.

[doublepost=1533916804][/doublepost]Have we gotten enough confirmation that using the Mojave beta solves the "wake with static" issue? I recall seeing one person say that they installed the Mojave beta and still had the static. The several others seem to have said it solves the problem.

I can’t speak for everyone, but the personal experience and the posts I’ve seen here seems to indicate that the issue is fixed with the Mojave update.

But keep in mind too that the Mojave betas change on each update, and it’s possible for the issue to be fixed on one beta, only to return on a later beta release. I’m waiting to see the final public release of Mojave to see if the issue is still there or not.

I would contact Apple customer support. Since this is a software issue, the Genius Bar employees likely will not be able to help much. The in store Genius Bar employees typically are going to mostly look at the actual hardware and they will may suggest a logic board replacement, which as other MR commenters have stated, doesn't fix the issue.

Why would you contact Apple at this point? It’s a known issue, my Mac does it literally all the time, and the Genius Bar will likely tell him, in the most polite way possible, to pound sand.

Wait it out, Mojave is around the corner.

This is true. I have gotten used to it enough that I am just waiting it out, I was just saying if the user feels so inclined to make their voice heard, they should contact Apple Customer support, not the Genius Bar, as they typically aren't as helpful on communicating those sort of issues. They are great on everything else, don't get me wrong, but they have more focus on the stuff that can be fixed with physical hardware replacements.

Yeah, let’s hope Mojave has a fix. All this waiting for an answer or a fix is annoying. Out of curiosity, when you returned your computer and got a new one did they give you a brand new one in the box?
