Overall, Cat on Mac Pro 3,1 is gonna be awesome. I have 8 cores, 48 GB RAM, 2.5TB SSD, 8TB HD space. Nice Galaxy 680 card. Also have an unpatched Titan but I may put in my PC MP 3,1.

I have two 3,1s.

Is this just for certain machines? My Imac has a t9300 Penryn and Iv never heard of removing telemetry.

If it says Core2Duo or is a MP3,1 in about this Mac, then yes. Otherwise nope. Same as Mojave and that is were Telemtry was discovered. Has anyone patched it? I just been removing it.

Easiest fix for audio has always been a usb device
[doublepost=1559844584][/doublepost]
That was Starplayer that did install .. he put in a drive that had install from a approved machine and added nvram fix.. I don't remember that fix now as i haven't used it for three years or so. But i seem to remember it as a boot option .. I think the nvram fix is available in DosDue1 early materials ... also I remember add ing the board id in the old days
Boot plist file is not on the data drive now and I did not have much luck with it yet. Sudo nvam does same thing with same check added.

Looking at my Mojave install I don't have the plugin (never knew) so I assume no one has made a patched version for it yet

The route I chose:
Tried patching OSInstall.mpkg/Distro...
and wanted to install via 10.15 app but could not get past 10.15 cannot be installed on this Mac message that runs before OSInstall.

So I put my SSD hardware RAId acts like a big HD via FireWire to thunderbolt on my work 2016 MacBook Pro and installed Catalina on it.

Put SSD back in my Mac Pro 3,1.

Booted Mojave and removed Telemetry.

sudo NVRAM was preset to skip comp. check. Tried setting it in the data file but no love there yet. Held down cmd X and V keys at boot. Booted very fast.
Metal worked. 4k works. No artifacts or panics.

Bluetooth, USB, Ethernet.

no sound or WiFi.

Gonna use workarounds til I find the right drivers.

Restarted without X and V. Boot slower.

Tried sound and WiFi patch from mojave but I had trouble making a new disk from mojave after downloading 10.15. Disk made 10.15 installer and did other weird stuff like leaving out dmg’s with mojave app and would not create a whole disk. It was late. 1 am. So gonna punt and go back to non patched system and use Ethernet and USB sound card til I work out the kinks.

My goal is to start using SwiftUI like today. :)
I'm also very excited about SwiftUI! Was planning on revving up the old 3,1 just for that and Xcode 11. Sorry Apple but I just don't have another $20K lying around for a new Pro. ;)

Thanks for the run down. OTA update from Mojave .5 has been non-productive for many: I don't think I've read of anyone with a successful Mojave->Catalina episode. Actually was just a wtf curious attempt on my part - these yearly OS refreshes are always best done via full installer. I did get way past the OSInstall Distribution tweak stage - so you must have fat fingered something by mistake (happens).

Glad to see the 680 is running smooth - is it a Mac Edition or a patched PC Version?

EDIT: By the way, with Mojave you can already play with SwiftUI in an iOS Playground with Xcode 11 beta. Just import SwiftUI and PlaygroundSupport. Not available in a macOS Playground since (obviously) Mojave does not yet support SwiftUI.

Am I able to remove it from the installer or is this why people have been using supported machines to clone installs? (I don't own supported machine)

Edit: I'd like to just say that I am actually useful once I am in the OS, I'm just not good at getting things to boot on supported machines.
The plugin itself is located in System/Library/UserEventPlugins: com.apple.telemetry.plugin (at least in Mojave, that’s where it was)
I’m not sure that you can remove it from the installer, that’s why most people clone drives from supported machines... at least in the beginning. Once a patcher is available then it’s not necessary.

I think your right. I'll just have to borrow a friends supported machine. Thanks for the info though.

I have a MacBook 6,1 that is running Mojave with very little issues (It cannot update without bricking) and I do NOT have a supported mac, in fact outside of virtual machines, this is my only physical mac. I really want to get this thing to run it, anyone have ideas? I tried to just update, but it says that my machine is unsupported (I mean obviously but it is running Mojave already).

Foxlet's instructions aren't as simple as it says and doesn't have exactly if you have a Mac host running QEMU, even a prebuilt QEMU which is the easiest to fire up, but gets confusing in a hurry after that point. I tried to compiler QEMU and failed. I have a prebuilt binary and it has tons of BIOS', but it's got so much it's overwhelming.

In my opinion Anka Build, a commercial product, is way simpler to setup than QEMU. Just 2-3 lines in the command line and that's it. NO messing with BIOS or tweaking a lot of settings. Note: I could not get it to install Catalina on 2008 Mac Pro. I did get it to install Catalina on a 2016 MacBook Pro and it was snappy and the developer is working on Metal support.

I got Parallels to work it's just slow. I would like to get QEMU running, but since I got Catalina running natively on my 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 after a few nights messing around with it, I probably won't be messing with the VM route for long.

I would like to see a more straight forward guide of QEMU and Catalina. Fotlet, no offense, has a good bit of scripts, but the instructions do not seem to have all the steps a Mac host would need and that was my first impression. QEMU is mainly a Linux product and there is just something to be desired on how to get it running on Mac. I am not poo pooing it, I just think it could be even simpler to setup. Granted, I haven to spent any time on QEMU as of yet just from outside looking in, it has a few barriers to entry for those who aren not familiar. Take a look at Veetu's Anka Build instructions and compare it to QEMU and it's night and day difference.

I am still very interested in QEMU and a guide for Mac users would be awesome.
Try installing virt-manager on top of QEMU, easier to configure that way :)
(For the BIOS you need OVMF)

I'll try to come up with a clear guide on how to run QEMU on macOS after my exams at then of the month.
I don't have any access to powerful macs though, and my cMP is gone so I would need help to figure out how PCIe passthrough (VFIO) would work...

So would it be possible to download Catalina beta and throw it on a partition for my 2010 5,1?
No ..only 2013 or above would do that.. but if you have an install from an approved machine with nvram and listing board you can make it work but you need a proper video card . GT120 will not install but will work afterwards probably .. I have a flashed 4,1 running mojave..

Follow Starplayr .. he succeeded but has not made a post that details what he did

Going at it again for a install on the 2007 iMac. This time I am creating a install usb and my first attempt will be to update from Mojave to Catalina. last resort will be trying a clean install.

Ok I've got a bootable Catalina installer but it won't let me boot to it on my MacBook Pro 7,1 it just gives me the stop sign how do I fix this?

Edit Ok I've semi fixed the issue by setting the boot arguments to not check for compatibility but then it just takes me to the recovery partition and trying to install it there says Mac isn't supported.

Its doing the same for me, I know its in beta but its actually a little bit ridiculous.
Agreed. The first betas have always been notoriously buggy. Xcode has been needing a complete redesign for ages - fat and bloated. If you’re hard core you can use the command line utilities and compilers for everything.

i know, i stupidly updated my iPhone and Apple Watch to the betas, and i can’t downgrade or else my watch doesn’t work. anyways i can’t write applications for it so i’m stuck using simulators on a MacBook Pro that from 2009

I’m getting the too. It’s something easy, i just can’t remember what I did before to get around it. Maybe verbose mode will lead to something

You have to edit the platform support plist in the Catalina installer so it doesn’t block you from installing it.

Got it installed on a Mac Pro 5,1 with updated BTLE WiFi card and AMD Radeon 7970 4GB by installing on a disk via supported MacBook Pro and bootargs. I modified the whitelist for BLE Watch Unlock, but that is not (yet?) working.
Should be able to turn on SIP in a bit.
Initial runs had a lot of white screens, loading bars, and spinning balls. But everything's has settled down nicely.
HomeBrew is working at least with SIP off.
External boot on a MacBook Pro mid 2018 required the right T2 settings (external boot allowed, allow older release of macOS,) an installed release version of Mojave on the external disk to boot into, Beta Profile installed, and the an update after download.
All other approaches would not install.

Some dumps. One is with safe boot on.. has timeout errors.

Mac Pro 3,1. No patches just removing telemetry. Boot slow. No love one Safe boot anymore. Getting KP. New install. I did a reinstall. Setup new user. Added Ethernet. Prev. Install patched blacklist OSInstall and Cpu checks not sure if that did anything.

Have Magic Mouse and keyboard. Could be causing a fuss this time. Got one good boot.

I think a power cable was loose in the video card. Get same screen lock on mojave.

Once you get networking working. The boot is speedy fast. It must be phoning home during boot (That's my guess, or the it's easier for the boot to happen when networking is on.)

I don't have "WiFi". I am internet sharing from an old 2006 Mac mini via Ethernet and Firewire. I turned both on incase one fails.

So far I don't have any patches installed on my Mac Pro 2008. To get Sound, I am using a 10 dollar USB to audio to a nice Samsung speaker bar. I have a spare coming in for Headphones.
