Was previously able to generate a bootable disk, but every time now the Dosdude patcher is reporting a problem remounting the usb stick. Couldn't get volume group information for device /dev/disk2s2

It may be because I'm generating the stick on an old Catalina beta (10.15 Beta (19A558d)), as I've been away for a while. Any thoughts?

You maybe right the patch will not work on beta. Suggest your download latest patch 1.2.3 and let it download latest OS Catalina 15.1. Ensure your SIP is disabled by running command in your terminal.

csrutil status

Then you try running patch to do its thing.

It's because you're running Catalina DP8. Just use the Install to This Machine option to update.

This response to csrutil status in Terminal for Catalina 19B88 seems oddly different from what I've seen before.

Just tried. Didn't work. Did Install to This Machine. After a bit it opened the patched installer.

I selected Install, it did the initial phase and rebooted.

After reboot it sat for a while on the grey screen and the proceeded to boot back into macOS DP8.

The system is using the APFS booter (needed when I installed 10.13), wondering if that somehow got in the road? (MBP5,5 Mid 2009)

Hey, I need some help installing the BlueSky patch? I've downloaded the files I just don't know what to do with them! I'm using Mojave but my dark mode isn't just right.. I'm assuming the patch fixes the issues?

Hi,
some issue (maybe off topic??):

Mac Mini 5,3 Server 2011:

VMware Fusion 15.5.0 can not use 3D-Acceleration with Windows 10 x64:

When starting a virtual machine a window does pop up and says: "There is no 3d-support from host........." :)

Is this VMware Fusion 15.5.0 related, as they did change their new VMware Fusion 15.5.0 from opengl to metal driven drivers?

#AFAIK: Recent VMWare Fusion(s) force using Metal instead of OpenGL for 3D-Acceleration by default.
On this case, open your Windows 10 (or any Guest OS) *.vmx file with XML editor then add these lines:
Code:
mks.enableMTLRenderer = "0"
mks.enableGLRenderer = "1"

So, yes.. it' s VMWare Fusion related changes.

I did not experience this on my 15" MBP 4,1, but I did a clean install of 10.15.1 rather than trying to upgrade, so maybe that made a difference. I can only think of two possible suggestions:

1. Try using the post-install tool on the USB stick to reinstall the patches, and see if that stops the reboot loop.

2. Try booting in Verbose Mode (hold down Command-V when booting) so you can see what it says shortly before it reboots. (Now that I think about it, I've never tried Verbose Mode with the APFS booter, so I don't know whether holding down Command-V works as usual or if you have to do anything different. I've temporarily downgraded my 15" MBP4,1 to El Capitan so I can't check this now.)

(By the way, the Early 2008 15" and 17" MacBook Pros were both MacBookPro4,1. It might be a good idea to mention screen size when talking about MBP4,1, in case it makes a difference.)

Hi all, I cant get the patcher to create the patch USB installer for some reason.

- Dosdudes patcher 1.2.3, Fresh download of Catalina using the patching tool
- SIP disabled
- Using local account with admin privileges
- Have tried to create USB installer on Mac Mini 5,1 (Mojave 10.14.3 currently) and Macbook Air mid 2011 (High Sierra currently), same issues
- Fresh 256GB USB stick, partitioned as 20GB for installer and remaining unpartitioned. Mac OS Journaled and GUID partition map (have tried 3x USB sticks, different manufacturers and same issue; also tried MBR instead of GUID partition map with no success)

1. If I try to create a USB installer, it gets about 1/2 way through and errors out with:
Error Saving InstallESD Image

The log reads:

2. If I use one 256GB partition on the USB, it errors out at the BaseSystem stage with the same 'couldn't unmount "disk4" - Resource busy' error right at the beginning of the install. Changing to 20GB got it further as above.

3. If I try to do a local install instead of creating a USB installer, the machine immediately crashes, Mac OS brings up a message around an application caused the system to crash, pressing any key reboots back into Mac OS.

[EDIT]

Ok for 1 and 2 - so I've found if I create a 200GB MacOS Journaled volume and then a 40GB MacOS Journaled volume on the USB stick, then use the 200GB as the installer target, it works fine. Weird, maybe a bug in the patcher? Not sure though, im no expert.

@dosdude1 do you have somewhere the post install patcher separately?
I have installed Catalina using VMM flag with OC and then extracted the resources folder from the DMG. Tried to run the post instal patcher from within but comes with an error. I only want to enable the unsupported wifi on my cMP5.1. Maybe it is only a kext I need to put in the kext folder of OC, but which kext?

Hi all,

First of all, thanks to everyone that makes our old Macs new again. Just a new problem when I upgraded to 10.15.1 (iMac 8,1). The Music app, TV app and podcast app doesn't allow you to log into your account and won't let you authorize the computer. I have logged off iCloud and re logged into it via settings

Anyone else having this issues?

I'm having the same issue with the same apps, none of them allows you to sign in, I tried reinstalling the patches and nothing.

This might be one of those cases too, Jack. Although the flashing white power LED error seemed to clear up by itself, I pulled the risers, blew the dust off, pulled the RAM DIMMs, cleaned the edge connectors, reassembled and re-installed and immediately got the flashing white LED! But at least I could see the red warning on the riser. Bottom riser DIMM 2. I pulled that one again and reseated and the MP started up fine. It could be the DIMM going bad or a corroded edge connection but something to watch for (and at least not the motherboard).

Considering how hot memory in a MacPro 3,1 runs, hence the need for huge heatsinks, my bet would be on failing memory. So far that and failing hard drives have been the only real problems here.

No real help for you (sorry), but I did a fresh install of 10.5.1 (no upgrade) and it works fine for me. Maybe something in the upgrade buggered it up?

After applying patches, same problem, boot loop :-(

That's weird, I see no reason why it didn't work on your case.
I just did some tests with Intel HD3000 and Nvidia Fermi (OpenGL), they were working fine.
Pls note that when editing *.vmx file (adding those 2 mks lines) you've to Quit VMWare completely.

#EDIT: IMHO, this is not OffTopic since we just make sure that OpenGL is running on System & Apps, right?

Hi guys, I can't understand how to update Catalina from 15.0 to 15.1
I downloaded the patcher from the dosdude site and tried an inplace installation, but I find the .0 version. Am I wrong? There is an alterante method?

Follow these steps for Airdrop activation. However, search the thread for your machine specific ktext files.
REPEAT PLEASE LOCATE ZIP FILE TO YOUR MACHINE SPECIFIC ON THIS THREAD.

The zip file posted is for MacBook Air 4.2 ( 2011 ) You should locate for your model.

QUOTE

AirDrop Catalina pre-patched (only for Broadcom cards) to those interested you should post the output of these Catalina Terminal commands:

ioreg -l | grep "board-id" | awk '{print $4}'
ioreg -r -n ARPT | grep IOName
system_profiler -detailLevel mini | grep "Card Type"
system_profiler -detailLevel basic | grep "Model Identifier"

Meanwhile here are some Wifi kext that I've pre-patched (tested and working) to AirDrop on Catalina unsupported Mac, they are hyperlinks so just click the one for your machine to download:

AirDrop Catalina patched MacBookAir2011 4,2.zip

After downloaded, open a Catalina terminal and copy/paste:

sudo mount -uw / ; killall Finder

Then from Catalina Finder replace (do not merge) them inside your Catalina /System/Library/Extensions/
after from a Catalina terminal send these commands copy/paste one at once:

sudo chown -R 0:0 /S*/L*/E*/
sudo chmod -R 755 /S*/L*/E*/
sudo kextcache -i /

(the "kextcache" takes some minutes to complete)
At next reboot you should have AirDrop in Catalina Finder.
After you have a working AirDrop, I suggest to apply this additional fix to enable an extra AirDrop feature that apple removed from Catalina: "AirDrop Search for older Mac"

After a working AirDrop on Catalina, if you have also a Bluetooth 4.0 card (or BT4.0 usb dongle), to add Continuity (Handoff, hotspot, etc.) check this example: enable continuity from terminal

Above was posted by many genius good people who have contributed to having unsupported Macs work with Catalina.

Hello,

Could you please show what are the steps to be used under Mojave to get Airdrop and Continuity ?

Why the High Sierra nVidia Web Driver Will Never Work on Mojave (long post, sorry - TL;DR at the end)

{ post cut for brevity; see original post if you want the gory details }

TL;DR: Under Mojave/Catalina, the Metal data structures are fundamentally different from HS, so HS drivers touching the Mojave/Catalina Metal system just can't work. Plus, there's no reasonable way to write an interface layer to smooth over those differences. nVidia users just need to hope that Apple and nVidia can come to terms at some point. OR, if nVidia could be persuaded to release (or "leak") unsigned Mojave drivers - or even just selected components (perhaps "for experimental use only" or some such) - there's a community of us out here that would be more than happy to make them usable... (even on fusty old Macs...)
I'm taking another run at this issue (and should therefore probably change my username to include either "Quixote" or "Sisyphus"), and thought I'd throw something out for the patch-makers among us:

The "under the hood" changes in Metal are remarkable. It seems that every dot-rev of MacOS includes numerous changes to the data structures and class hierarchies. My earlier observation about the HS nVidia driver's incompatibility with Mojave included conjecture that the Metal changes may have been directed at nVidia, but I now doubt that's the case - there's no reason for Apple to continue to make wholesale changes past the first round if their main objective was just to exclude nVidia's driver. Since most of the video drivers are provided by Apple, the changes are transparent to end-users, since Apple just recompiles everything using the most current headers/libraries. Any third-party drivers, however, would need to have separate code branches for each iteration of Metal, and installations/rollbacks would be perilous without strong endpoint version control. (And for the programmers, maintenance would be a nightmare.)

These changes involve both structure size and structure content order, and many of the structures include pointers, so any such change will produce fatal errors if a kext uses the wrong version. So it's no surprise, then, that the 10.14.6 update killed the AMD Metal patch, because there were some structural changes. More changes occurred into 10.15, and they will presumably continue into the future. Thus, if you're producing a patch that relies on substituting any Metal-related files from an earlier release of MacOS, be aware that your patch will likely fail in a future dot-rev, quite possibly the very next one. (If the kext has "MTL" anywhere in the name, it's almost certainly Metal-related.)

Exactly, from your picture the Windows VM task bar is transparent, so it's video accelerated, probably the same will work with a Linux VM too, but I don't think is possible to achieve acceleration on any OSX virtual machine guest.
