I've recently updated my mbp17 (late 2011) to Catalina. I formatted SSD and made clean install using dosdude's patcher. To my surprise it was fully functional right after install and there was no post install like for Mojave, also usually I need to disable AMD gpu, as it is not working in Mojave and Catalina and broken in my mbp anyway.

Everything works fine except I cannot load AMDRadeonX3000.kext, and because of that I have higher CPU temperature.
I partially fixed my issue following this post but now I'm getting other error

Bash:
sudo kextload /AMD_Kexts/AMDRadeonX3000.kext

/AMD_Kexts/AMDRadeonX3000.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).

Bash:
sudo kextutil /AMD_Kexts/AMDRadeonX3000.kext

I patched Catalina for my MacPro 2012. It it working beautifully except for one small issue, the computer never goes to sleep.
Anyone has a fix for that?
Haha, I leave my Mid-2010 5,1 on all the time. Anyways, what video card do you have installed?

Hi @-Drizzt-
I also have a MP5,1 (mid-2012) and I am currently under Catalina 10.15.1 (19B88) and the function "Sleep" works very well here, it is the function that I use because I do not almost never shutdown my MP5,1.
Capture d’écran 2019-10-30 à 01.28.42.png

I am very surprised that it does not work for you. Does your MP5.1 reboot when you ask him to go to sleep? If so, do you have an error message after the reboot?

I had some problems with this function "Sleep" but only with MBP5,3 rebooted with error message (Sleep Wake Failure) when closing the flip instead of going to sleep. I solved this problem by disabling "Power Nap" with opening Terminal and writing (The admin password must be set).

Code:
sudo pmset -a darkwakes 0

The error message was:

"Stackshot Reason: Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while entering darkwake on the way to sleep." Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily.Thread 0x74.
Failure code :: 0xd5f2a20d 00000031 "

Here is the cause (for the error above):

An extension of the kernel, linked to the graphics card (or an external video display), is blocked by Apple's "Power Nap" feature, also known as darkwake.

Sleep works if I ask it to go to sleep manually, it just won't sleep by itself.

WHOA

Edit: Confirmed working! I'm going to see if I can chroot to a pre-Catalina installation and get some 32-bit graphical apps to launch. That would be amazing!

@ASentientBot any luck in tracking down the secondary monitor login problems?
No, I'm sorry. I can't troubleshoot something that I can't reproduce, especially since your two crash logs are totally different.

Did you ever try a fresh installed system in order to rule out a bad install and/or third-party software?

My 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 is running Mojave and all applications superbly. Is there a way to upgrade to 10.15 Catalina using dosdude 1's Catalina patcher over Mojave without having to reinstall all applications like I've done on my 2018 MacBook Pro using Software Update?

Sleep works if I ask it to go to sleep manually, it just won't sleep by itself.

Ok so if the sleep function works manually and not automatically it looks more like a software problem rather than hardware.
Do you have any software running when it refuses to go to sleep or are they all closed? Because some software of download as μTorrent, qBittorrent ... prevents the sleep if there are transfers in progress.
This may not be your case but it may be a track to follow...
I just did two tests with mine:
First attempt by setting the sleep timer at 2 min and I timed, the sleep was done after 3min45 ".
The second test by setting the sleep timer to 5 min and I timed, the dormant intervened after 8min38 ".
The time before sleeping seems much longer than what I've set but sleep is working well.
I will also test with 30 minutes and then with 1 hour

Hi, does anyone know if there is a fix for the missing labelling of buttons in Home.app?
(MBP 2010, 10.15.1)

Seems like probably a non-Metal graphics patch issue, but I don't use Home so I can't test easily. You could try enabling "increase contrast" in Accessibility preferences (or using Quartz Debug to disable acceleration). If either of those fix it, it's definitely an acceleration/transparency related problem.

I'll see if I can figure anything out since there's a decent chance that it's my fault.

Edit: Maybe not my fault since it apparently happened on Mojave too, but definitely a non-Metal issue that might be patch-able in one of the Home frameworks where these things are drawn. Warning in advance... any solution will probably make it uglier!

It's not your fault, the same issue was present under Mojave with non-Metal video cards.

Installing the latest Catalina version using the latest Catalina Patcher version should most likely resolve this issue.
@dosdude1 this worked... for a minute. I was on 10.15. So I downloaded the lates Catalina Patch Updater and installed the new version, 10.15.1. I was able to login successfully.

Shortly after logging in, Patch Updated offered to install another legacy video patch of some sort. So, I let Patch Updater do its thing after which I was asked to reboot. So, I did.

Once I rebooted, I can no longer log in. The symptoms are exactly the same as before. I enter my password, hit enter/return, I get a couple of spinners which abruptly stop spinning, the screen turns black and, after a few seconds, I am presented with the login screen again.

Rebooting in single-user mode, I found that /Library/logs contains a couple of WindowServer*.crash files with the current date and time.

So, as @ASentientBot said, this is a Window Server crash. The .crash file is attached.

Thoughts?

This looks extremely similar to @sgtnathsmiffy's problem. I'm really confused as to what's suddenly causing these on 10.15.1 when my system has the same version, same video patches, and I've also been using an external monitor a lot.

This is extremely weird...

I won't be able to do much about this until I can reproduce it on my system. Have @0403979, @dosdude1, @jackluke or anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have an idea of a certain configuration that triggers it?

Thoughts?
You should not have any Patch Uodater prompts for Legacy Video Card Patch if using version 1.2.3 of Catalina Patcher to install. Ensure you don't have the Patch Updater app leftover from Mojave Patcher (if you did an update from Mojave), as that will install the incorrect patches.

"I'd advise upgrading it if possible" means, that you have to change the GPU (purchase a compatible GPU, open the iMac, get the AMD 5xxx/6xxx GPU out (it is on a socket, not soldered), put the new GPU in). That for a normal user is not possible (to difficult), you have to get help from your local Apple user group.
what other GPUs can be changed to in iMac 2010/2011? Nothing but HD 6xxxx is available on ebay.

I have ordered the Dell/Alienware Nvidia GTX765m for my iMac 27 inch (mid 2011). My Graphic card apparently died and now my iMac has been a sitting duck for a while. It is still in transit.
