Just picked up a Mac Pro 4,1. I see that it is in the supported list for this, however, do I need to upgrade to the 5,1 firmware? I was planning on doing this so I could run an nVME PCI-E drive as a boot drive, upgrade to a 6 core, and be able to natively run High Sierra. If I upgrade to 5,1 does that negate needing to do the ROM Patcher? Is that for if I keep it on 4,1? Also is the Geforce GT 120 supported? Thanks!

Just make the installer disk on an internal partition?
I am locked out of any installed macOS, I am using Linux temporarly on this machine. All I have are two installer pendrives, one with Mojave, one with Catalina, neither work. It seems USB functions is ireversably damaged.

I don't have a Mac Pro but the word on the street is if you flash 4,1 to 5,1 you'll be able to install Mojave natively with a metal capable GPU. And of course you don't need an APFS ROM patch. GeForce GT120 will require the Legacy Video Patch to be applied to your installation.

That's correct. I have a 4.1-->5.1 Mac Pro and runs Mojave natively. Upgraded GPU and wifi/bluetooth module. Boot from a NVME PCI Express.

I have a iMac mid 2011 21.5 inch that I upgraded the GPU to a NVIDIA K2100k. I have a i7 2600s 2.8 and 20Gb mem.

I used @dosdude1 patcher to install Catalina. Part of the way through the install (towards the end of the first phase) the screen went blank. The screen stayed blank through the rest of the install.

The voice-over aid began speaking so I know it fully installed, but the screen was still blank.

I ran the post install patches and restarted, still a blank screen.

What am I doing wrong - what should I do differently?
Install apfs patch via patcher and try

I have the Same Problem but no Way found

@Syncretic How'd you fix the telemetry plugin issue on C2D? I've wondered about it for a couple years but never figured out the problem.
I just used kauth to trap all executables; if the path matches the telemetry plugin, I deny access (otherwise, ignore). Launcher seems to try executing the plugin at least four times at startup, based on some quick & dirty logging. (Not sure if it keeps trying periodically or just gives up after initial failure.)

Do you have a metal GPU after upgrade to Nvidia. Check page 1 of this thread to see if your display card is compatible for Catalina
I was able to install Mojave perfectly. It installed and updated from Apple without a hitch. It runs all the latest software so I may stay with Mojave for now.

I also installed a new WiFi/Bluetooth card so there are features I would like to take advantage of from Catalina.

Oh great you have flashed Nick's bios to your metal card as I see in the image. In that case normal on start up you get a black screen and then the apple window white screen with progress bar to take you to Catalina. When you used Dosdudes patch 1.4.3 the legacy video patch should be unticked and also ensure you have SIP disabled.

I’ll give it another try. I did untick the legacy video patch. I didn’t do anything with SIP.

I am not sure if your display card is compatible K2000m. Check this forum for Catalina compatibility for your card may fetch you some answers
The K2000M flashed with a proper vBIOS is perfectly compatible with Catalina. Writing this in an iMac 2011 having installed an Nvidia GTX 780m card running Catalina 10.15.3. Even with some DELL vBIOS versions the card would work, although without some features...

Probably you can "heal" this issue by using the OpenCore image provided by @Nick [D]vB to be used with this card for brightness control. Currently some people are complaining about this problem, @Mark Meretz got around it using OpenCore (without having a GPU needing this) and I do not have it at all because all my machines have metal cards with a vBIOS by @Nick [D]vB and OpenCore.

Currently this is the only (common) indicator I see. This is a guess...

So I just found out today that you can do this. I have a stock late 2011 13" I-5 MacBook Pro that I want to:

A) Upgrade the battery on
B) Go to a solid state drive
C) Install Catalina if it is worth doing so

Since this thread is over 400 pages, does anyone know if there are specific posts I should be looking at? Do I need to upgrade the video card? Can you do this as an update or does it have to be on a clean drive? Is it worth doing this? Sorry for all the questions.

ebay.com to get parts, ifixit.com for the repair and hardware installation guides, and www.dosdude1.com for the Catalina Patcher and how to use it. no need to read 400 pages.

Appreciate the reply. The hard drive and battery I should be able to do. I was just curious about the Catalina installation and whether I should upgrade the video capabilities or whether or not it is worth installing period.

Is the system really upgradable? I thought it has just the iGPU HD3000 ....ifixit.com will tell you, too!

I was able to finally get into the Catalina install. I disabled the SIP. I still get a black screen. But if I press down the option key and select the drive to run Catalina, it boots visibly and I get in with the system visible on the screen. The system is very usable.

How do I use OpenCore to instal Cayalina?

I ask myself how did you get the K2100M into your machine with our reading this thread and more importantly the first post and the guides in there? Search for the OpenCore announcement. BTW, does your machine has sleep issues?

I searched DosDude's site FAQ as well as all possible notes, reviewed the first post of this thread, then did a search but just got too many hits.

What is the correct way to perform a Catalina update? Should I allow OS X to update, then boot into USB installer and run patches?
