Hello there :)!
I have a MacBook Pro 13' late 2011. I intended on updating it to Mac OS Catalina.
If it is possible, Can any one please tell me about the performance?
Currently I am on Mac OS Mojave and it freezes a lot with some graphic anomalies. Is it better on Catalina?
Any insight from Catalina OS users in general would be appreciated.

I had the same issue on my MacBook5,1. For me, deleting all known wifi networks and connecting again to my local wifi solved the problem.
Brilliant! That worked. I can't get it to connect to my hidden network (was able to in 10.15.6), but that's OK for now. The person using this machine just needs Internet access for the most part.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I’ve the same machine, mine was upgraded with a 250gb ssd and 16gb ram and I’ve Intel 3000 graphics.
I’m on Catalina 10.15.7, installed with @dosdude1 patcher and so far it runs prety well, like Mojave did.
The startup takes about 25 seconds.
This is my dailly Mac, I use it for Graphic and Web design.
I usually work with Photoshop CC 2018, Indesign, Illustrator, most of time all at the same time and have no issues.
I also use Parallels with windows 10 and Linux Mint Tricia and also no problems with it.
Sometimes Safari makes my fans run like hell, but I think its the only problem I can report. ( oh, and today I was unable to print to a shared printer (conected to a Linux pc )

Ps: it’s not good to bold everything in your questions, there is something called netiquett.

Well hello there again :) !
Thanks for your insight and your time, very appreciated. 🙏

if you may excuse my inquiry. I use photoshop too, but why 2018? Other versions don’t run?

also how are the temps? my Mac has been running hot lately. So I was inclined to change my thermal paste.

Regarding your PS, thanks for noting out. I did not know that. I am only using it as a highlight to my thoughts and as I don’t like increasing the font size.

Well, I use 2018 because its the one I have and (I may be wrong here) I bellive more recent software will need more graphical power (and the infamous metal requirement) and I just have the Intel hd 3000. For my needs 2018 is ok.

As far as I can tell my mac temperature is ok, as I said only safari makes the fans turn on (and when this happens it gets hot), I just use Firefox now and I’m quite happy with it.

I had some problems with hight temperatures in the past, had some usb problems with Parallels but since upgraded to 10.15.7 those problems were gone.

In my previous post I forgot to say, I’ve two hp w2007 monitors connected (one via mini display port and one via usb adaptor), and even so my sistem is going very well.

I had a very good experience with @dosdude1 Mojave patcher, when moving to Catalina had some problems, but now I’m really happy with the machine (I think I will not upgrade anymore)

I apologize if this has been answered already, I looked through a little bit and didn't see it in the thread recently so I'm gonna ask.

So, unlike patched Mojave, Catalina will not update via system preferences for some reason. The work around for that was to create a new patcher each time and install over. Well, with security updates (IE 10.15.7-2020-00x) Apple does not release a new installer. So, how do we install security updates?

I haven't booted Catalina on my Mac Pro in probably a year, and on a Mac Pro I know there are workarounds like OpenCore (though I don't use that). On my MacBook however that isn't an option I assume.

There is something in this forum called: CatalinaOTAswufix. To enable OTA updates.

you mean it does not work anymore?

PS: I haven’t installed Catalina OS. I am checking this forum to decide.

Okay if anyone is having issues with safari 14. I found safari 13 technology Preview. Sorry its not safari 13.1 but here you go. I found it on web archive.org. Works on Catalina 10.15.7. Most safari extensions work. Kinda hard to find that's not a torrent.

Safari 13 technology Preview download

Im kinda curious if I can get safari 12 to work on Catalina with some reverse engineering to the .pkg file. Wish I can get the extensions to work on safari 14.0.1

I’ve been away from the forum for awhile, I wasn’t aware there was a fix. I want to install Catalina on my 2009 MacBook since it won’t get big sur graphics acceleration, and it’s old enough to boot snow leopard so I’ll be doing a dualboot of that.

I usually check the first wiki post. A fix for OTAs is something that IMO should be in the wiki post...

Hi, everybody!

A problem has arisen. A year ago I installed a new graphics card GTX765M in my iMac 27 2010 and successfully installed Catalina 10.15.3 through this patch.

Today I am reinstalling the system from scratch. I created usb flash through this patch and installed MacOS. Then in Post Install I installed patches for my iMac.

But when I boot up I have a black screen and I only hear VoiceOver.

Tell me what to do?

I'm seeing a new panic with 10.15.7 19H2 (installer 15.7.02) that wasn't there with 10.15.5 on a MBP8,3 2011 17" (AMD chip is disabled).
After this panic, the system goes into a black screen-wont-boot mode.
Hit or miss... holding Control-Option-Shift-Command-Power for 10+ seconds, then releasing all modifier keys and quickly turning on the power sometimes triggers a disabled-SMC-mode where the fans go full blast (the battery charge button wont activate is another way to tell you've got it in this mode). After a few rounds of this, and 'D' to enter diagnostic mode, the system will eventually boot.
It's very disruptive when this happens. I use dosdude's Catalina patcher. Is 19H15 downloadable yet with it?

Any recommendation on who likes to dive into these issues? I'm a software developer, so I'm willing to try some experiments.

Note: I didn't tell the system to sleep. It just froze after quitting Word while working on a document with a lot of complex SVGs. The other time it did this, it just made a snapping noise and rebooted immediately to a black screen. In another case, it was just a regular reboot that ended up with a black screen and the same finger-dance to recover.

For "setPowerState(...,1 -> 0)", other's have said an "unofficial solution is: In system preferences -> energy saver -> power adapter -> turn display off after = NEVER", but that's kind of absurd.

"macOSPanicString":"panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8010814e17): "AppleIntelFramebuffer::setPowerState(0xffffff8034b99800 : 0xffffff7f911d3860, 2 -> 1) timed out after 45594 ms "@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.141.2/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5296 nBacktrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Address n0xffffff823f83bb40 : 0xffffff801011a65d mach_kernel : _handle_debugger_trap + 0x49d n0xffffff823f83bb90 : 0xffffff8010254a75 mach_kernel : _kdp_i386_trap + 0x155 n0xffffff823f83bbd0 : 0xffffff80102465fe mach_kernel : _kernel_trap + 0x4ee n0xffffff823f83bc20 : 0xffffff80100c0a40 mach_kernel : _return_from_trap + 0xe0 n0xffffff823f83bc40 : 0xffffff8010119d27 mach_kernel : _DebuggerTrapWithState + 0x17 n0xffffff823f83bd40 : 0xffffff801011a117 mach_kernel : _panic_trap_to_debugger + 0x227 n0xffffff823f83bd90 : 0xffffff80108c1a6c mach_kernel : _panic + 0x54 n0xffffff823f83be00 : 0xffffff8010814e17 mach_kernel : __ZN9IOService12ackTimerTickEv + 0x6f7 n0xffffff823f83be50 : 0xffffff80108146f9 mach_kernel : __ZN9IOService21actionAckTimerExpiredEP8OSObjectPvS2_S2_S2_ + 0x9 n0xffffff823f83be60 : 0xffffff801082bc8e mach_kernel : __ZN10IOWorkLoop9runActionEPFiP8OSObjectPvS2_S2_S2_ES1_S2_S2_S2_S2_ + 0x3e n0xffffff823f83bea0 : 0xffffff80108134a8 mach_kernel : __ZN9IOService17ack_timer_expiredEPvS0_ + 0x38 n0xffffff823f83bec0 : 0xffffff801015c605 mach_kernel : _thread_call_delayed_timer + 0xec5 n0xffffff823f83bf40 : 0xffffff801015c131 mach_kernel : _thread_call_delayed_timer + 0x9f1 n0xffffff823f83bfa0 : 0xffffff80100c013e mach_kernel : _call_continuation + 0x2e

I installed it on a Mac mini 2011. Everything seems normal and fast, except the screensavers. Drift is black, Arabesque miss the options and and is broken. Flurry is the only that works, and lags sometimes.

Anyone having these problems with the screensavers?

Pretty sure Arabesque just doesn't have options to configure.
And drift is broken for everyone with older GPUs(no metal support)

My iMac 8,1 has been running Catalina for about a year, without any major problems.
System Preferences Network shows that the system is connected to the Network via a Bluetooth PAN. This is not correct. There are no active Bluetooth PANs. My iPhone is powered off and the WiFi modem from the ISP does not support Bluetooth. It's unlikely that the neighbours are providing free internet access via Bluetooth without a password.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? A search on this tread under "PAN" did not produce any relevant results.

Anyone else here have an issue with "Dark Mode"?

I'm experiencing the following:

1) Does not automatically apply at Sunset and Sunrise (Nightshift seems to thanks to the patcher)

2) Native apps do not appear "Dark", though the Menubar and Dock do.

Thoughts?

Thanks.
