The same happened with the original card before failing. Many have been using thé updated card without a problem and is also sold by ifixit, I seriously doubt they would be staking their reputation on a ‘bogus” card IMHO. Many have also reported the disconnect issue on Catalina , Iwas hoping someone had encountered the problem and found a solution for the wifi as the BT works fine.
Running Catalina on three different models of unsupp Macs have never seen that issue. WI/FI always solid. Are you sure the original card is bad if it behaves like the used card? Does it fail on both 2.4 and 5GHz?

Is there a way to get the optical drive working with the dosdude catalina patcher on unsupported macs? I had to roll back a 2011 Macbook Pro to High Sierra because the patchers for anything beyond that killed the DVD player and my Mom still watches lots of DVD’s on her old Macbook Pro.

Hello K two, The original card is bad as it doesn't show up as installed in System Report. I started having the same issue on the original before it went south. The new "BT 4.0" card works when I delete wiFi and then reboot to add back WiFi but then "turns off" unable to turn back on. Could it be a firmware issue? It was noted by Finbarr Dnaipe that the latestest firmware (with High Sierra) is Boot ROM Version: 84.0.0.0.0. I have Boot ROM Version: 82.0.0.0.0. I believe the only way to get the latest firmware for MBP 8,2 is to format SSD, install High Sierra and subsequently have the firmware in an update then install/restore back to Catalina. I have done the High Sierra redo route a few weeks ago but my firmware remained at "82.00; I didn't see any update subsequent to High Sierra install Any suggestions? Thanks. BTW to respond to your post, I did remove/add WiFI in network preferences, reboot to regain WiFI and have had it on for the last 20'. The disconnect occurs at random times; goes off anywhere between 5'-120'. This occurred/occurs with old and new WiFI card. Could be a motherboard related issue? After all who knows although everything was fine until 2 months ago. The motherboard was replaced by Apple in 2016 under their dGPU-gate recall (to have their motherboard fail after just 6 months again)

I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro 2011 that is using dosdude1 Catalina, and the DVD/CD drive works just fine. I’ve never heard of the problem that you mention. Perhaps, something went awry when you installed. Maybe just try one more time?

If You are installing the dosdude1 Catalina On a 2011 15 or 17 inch MacBook Pro, The graphics cards in those machines don’t play nice with patched Catalina. That might be what the problem is. In that case, you can visit http://dosdude1.com/catalina/ and look under the “known issues“ tab for support with patched Catalina.

The dvd drive should still work, but perhaps Apple DVD Player doesn’t? If that’s the case switching to a different program, such as VLC, could be an option.

If I were to use a patcher I wouldnt force the issue of installing it on a year model that is more than 2 years elder of the system requirement.

Like I would never use macOS 12 Monterey on a 2012 iMac 27" Core i7 BTO 22nm

If the problem is with the MBO, updating firmware probably won't fix the intermittancy. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for your input; other than MBO any suggestions as to possible resolution
Since I can't duplicate the intermittancy, the only thing I can add is a while back on a relatives' Mini3,1 the coax connection at the large antenna had become frayed and hard to spot. Replacement fixed. Has a SMC reset been done recently? 🤷‍♂️

Hi K two, Yes SMC and PRAM but problem remains. Disconects after a while. I will look affrayed cable as you suggest but wouldn't that mean that I would be even able to see card in System Report?

During an intermittancy does the card continue to appear in the System Report? 🤷‍♂️
Yes for the most part; in rare occasions when I delete card from network settings so as to reinstall as some posts have suggested, it doesn’t show when I want to add it back. I then need to reset with PRAM to see again WiFi to add to network list of devices. I wonder again if it could be the firmware issue since supposedly it should be boot rom version 84.00 as oh high sierra and I show version 82.00. I had after having tried BS came back to Catalina with a clean install via high sierra last compatible for mbp 8,2 but the mbp still showed version 82.00 rather than the 84. Perhaps I should have waited to get an update before immediately proceding afterwards to a clean install of Catalina? I am on a big fishing expedition here haha…

Not sure how the board would behave if a coax center conductor was shorted to return? It may allow for some operation before shutting down. 🤷‍♂️

Hi,
just noticed - even if the updates seem to install, I see the Catalina build number in my case always shows up as 19H2. This is a bit suspicious, isn't it ?
EDIT: I expected the build to increment after software updates. But please correct me - if it's not true. Thanks.

Are you POSITIVE it is a 2011 model? The 2008, 2009, and 2010 models all need a patch to run the built in Apple DVD Player, but the 2011 and up models do not.
