Ha, thanks. I knew that. I had forgotten. I have it working now as well.
[doublepost=1561858740][/doublepost]

You can get Maps to open and work? It crashes on my Mini 5.1. Does photos work for you or not?

Maps opens but it's not usable. Photos crashes. But Reminders, which is a text app, also has visual glitches that make it unusable.

All I want to know is if this is being worked on (yay thank you) or is dead in which case I'll downgrade.

'Preciate you guys!

Maps and reminders seem ok to me but of course I haven't tried them in light mode that could be part of the reason for glitches but I didn't do a clean install Of Cat just upgraded from Mojave Photos does crash I am sure things will get fixed over time a bunch of very smart people here :)

@ASentientBot, FYI also on a supported Catalina Mac, renaming temporary the MTLDriver.kext to kext2, hence disabling the Metal acceleration, Photos.app crashes exactly the same way as using yours Catalina non-metal-OpenGL-fallback patches, so, even if it won't work properly, but what you think about releasing a "PhotosUICore non-metal" as a beta pre-patch?

Or do you think that in later Catalina beta apple may release a Photos.app with a CoreImage fallback, as they did for Xcode 11 beta 2 ?
My patch for PhotosUICore completely prevents from displaying the image thumbnails, so I don't think it's worth releasing. Perhaps I (or someone else) can find a better fix though! I only spent 1/2 hour on the previous one.

I'm hoping as you said, Apple will make it easier in a future beta. Not going to spend tons of time on this until .0 GM since things are still changing quickly. Who knows if the SkyLight wrapper stuff will even keep working that long... We badly need a better solution, and soon.

Those days of "the crazy ones" are long gone. Now, it's all about shares vesting and retiring from a startup after becoming a millionaire following the M&A.

I hope there are kids doing crazy stuff in garages but I'm not so sure ... .

I wonder if any rebel misfit is still in Apple's employ? Doubt it.

Just wanted to response that Catalina os is working on a MacBook Pro 15 2010 with an i7 and non metal gpu flawlessly without any crash YET. and I made a fresh install yes. will post back if I encounter any problems. great work dosdude1!

There is a thought that the mp5.1 was going to have Catalina support. But this was withdrawn at a late stage due to the intel cpu security problems. This is probably why it can run Catalina with very few changes needed.

Provided you have set the nvram (say from your Mojave drive) then installing Catalina using the usb installer but not patching should work. This will give you Catalina in its original form which is the way to go if you can manage it. I am tempted to get a 5.1 if I see one at a good price. However my 3.1 is not doing so bad for an 11 year old machine. All the best.

Ah thanks. ATM catalina is running on my separate test drive (mojave installed before). I'm curios if the installation would work on a blank hdd, I could install? I'd set it up with APFS, then installing catalina without patching. Has anybody tried this on a cMP 5.1 2012? Cheers

Thanks to you and @dosdude1! I'm running on a Mac mini 5,1 and it's great except the Apps all have graphics glitches (Reminder, News, Maps, etc.).

From what you posted, graphics acceleration should be working right?
If graphics acceleration wasn’t working, you’d immediately notice the lack of transparency. It would also be slower. So yes, you do have acceleration.

The original screenshot clearly shows acceleration, though. Hey @nicksilverstein, would you mind sharing how you got this setup? This could be one of the most significant finds since last year.

@ASentientBot All I did was installed macOS Catalina with Dosdude1's Tool and I checked legacy video card patch and when I got to the desktop I installed Whatevergreen and Lilu from here:
https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/339035-pre-release-macos-catalina/

Any other assistance I could be of... Let me know.

You are the master of binary-fixes since early Mojave, agreed there should be at least 10 betas till the final .0 release, but as they did for Xcode 11 beta1 that crashed almost the same way of Photos (a Metal render over a Grid), at apple they can't wait too for your PhotosUICore fix.

I am joking, but why they in developing a "Metal macOS for Metal native machines" fixed the Xcode 11 beta2 for running on non-metal ? That's enough weird, even a bit more than re-using legacy IOUSB on Mojave 10.14.5 .

And now you have acceleration on your AMD Radeon card?
Kind of. My dock is transparent but, the menu bar is not. FCPX Loads with no errors or warnings but it lags like heck. It could be useable though. Most of the Windows in finder and About this Mac are very laggy when you drag the Windows around. So, not very usable. I posted that because I thought someone out there could do something with this information and possibly get macOS Catalina to work with the 6xxx because I love my 17-inch Mac and I would love to use it to its full potential (I can't be the only one out there). I did not post it to show off or get props.

Are any windows transparent? It seems like you achieved a semi acceleration/some sort of CPU based transparency.

Thanks @dosdude1 for patch :). Have two queries, I'm running 10.14.5 on MacBook 5,1 (Unibody 2008), can I install Catalina over it to upgrade it? Anyone tried it on same hardware?
You can install Catalina over it and it should work fine. But make sure to have a backup just in case.

I haven't tested this out yet, but hdiutil can resize APFS disk images. And afterwards, with the help of diskutil, you can resize the containers. This may help users with images made with dd as well.

https://eclecticlight.co/2019/03/16/disk-utility-cant-resize-apfs-disk-images-but-hdiutil-can/

I *strongly* advise against resizing APFS partitions/containers with hdiutil as it have destroyed several of my disks and had to go and manually edit the GPT partition table to save them. Thank god I managed to save the most important ones, but that was not fun.

Don’t wanna break it to you, but my dock was transparent with Mojave patcher last year, but I never used that card because it was laggy as hell. That’s a weird glitch. Sorry, but I can’t reproduce it as my gpu is failing. But I’d be glad to help and make it work since I could technically still use the gpu if I change the thermal paste to keep it from overheating

It would be so funny if we could use memory slot utility with patched mbps as they have memory slots...
Also, can someone help me get Mojave’s photos.app running on Catalina?

I have the same error message trying to create a working usb boot stick as other member “grzegorz9141”. I am using 64 B 3.0 usb stick. ( tried with macos extended journaled and also APFS formatted) , Latest Catalina patcher and using latest catalina beta macos version. Is there a guide how to create a working usb drive? Or can some tell me what i am doing wrong? Appreciated all tips and compliment to this usefull site

See Page 86, towards the middle. Keep in the mind these parts are overseas and may take 3-4 weeks.

I have that card on order. Do you know which is one the BT Antenna?
J3 is the BT connection on the BCM94360CD. The 3 other Wi-Fi aerials can be connected to any of the other 3 terminals. If you cannot find the 3rd Wi-Fi aerial it may be tucked behind the hard drives splines.

The third antenna connector is usually found covered with a short clear plastic tubing to prevent shorts.
