I'd start with Catalina. Work through the issues of getting your graphics card to work properly (which will likely be you biggest hurdle being NVIDIA) ? >>> http://dosdude1.com/catalina/
This should get you going in the right direction.

I know you are new to this, but as stated before, Youtube and Google can help you through the process much more comprehensively. In terms of Big Sur, this is all still a work in progress with patching and Betas. So don't expect a polished patcher for the time being.

And to the other members of the forum, don't be an *******. Help where you can, and inform. Everyones new at some point
I would even do Mojave if you're OK with that. It's much better for old machines

2020 imac 27 here - How can I ensure I'm downloading the correct beta version 6? Backstory: previously unsuccessfully tried installing beta 5 ...obviously with no success woops. So I Un-enrolled, then re-enrolled today, removed the 'install big sur' from my applications. The update showing in 'software update' never went through process of downloading the ~12gb file, its as if it's still wanting to install the old beta 5. In 'system update' in preferences it shows the file as 11.0 --12.13 GB. How would I know I'm not just re-installing the old beta? OR How can I remove the temporary beta 5 and have it try to re-download the new beta version 6?

what did u follow I have a MacBook Pro mid-2012 running 2 1 TB Samsung evo ssd's and a WD 4TB my book on the side

I have the same MBP mid-2012 retina and am typing this on beta 6; my install is on a Crucial X8 external SSD.

If you are running Catalina, then download BarryKN's micropatcher, version 0.1.0 (see above link in post #3797. Follow his "quick instructions" carefully paying close attention to where spaces go in terminal commands.

I have an updated 802.11ac Broadcom card so I stop after step 7 of his quick instructions. The whole process from making the USB install drive to end took about 40 minutes. The installer is 12.16GB, so you'll need a pretty big USB stick for this beta installer -- I used a 64GB SanDisk USB drive.

If you are already running a beta of BSur then just follow the same instructions, but skip BarryKN's step 5.

To know you have beta 6 look at the rather long url for the download. The correct beta 6 has this in the addy:
49/42/001-43966-A_UZVPNAGC5P. That 43966 is BSur beta 6; the size is 12.16GB.

Of course, you can delete the old beta if you are an admin.
