Confused by your question, Software Update for OS updates don't run on unsupported macs, so why the question?
Confused by your question, Software Update for OS updates don't run on unsupported macs, so why the question?
Riiiiight, well that was my question as well. I assume minor semi-OS level updates (like the one I got after installing last night about AppleRAW) will work, and app updates will work, but I also assume the OS itself won’t update.
But the question and the response with the link to block the updates—confused me.

Huh, what are you on about?

1. 29B28 ??? It's 20B28 for RC2 and 20B29 for Big Sur released on Thursday 12 November.
2. I did not say to install anything, you installed it.
3. On 20B29, I said that it's has been mentioned multiple time, why link to an article which 1. Has no link 2. We all already know for hours/half a day.

So as already reported this 11.0.1 Release Candidate has still a Beta naming, also its BaseSystem.dmg , all newer core system files have been compiled on 30 October by apple.

I decided to release my newer BigSur BaseSystem fix that includes also some my patching bash apps (attached a summary table) that require a minimal keyboard interaction.

I also added some my modified custom apps, for example based on hholtmann's smcFanControl I wrote a script that should allow to detect the average CPU temperature from recovery environment and increase fans RPM speed.

I attached a pdf to explain in more detail my BigSurFixes.

Guides, patched files and patching methods :

- @ASentientBot HaxLib.dylib, Nvidia Tesla fixes, 0xfff boot.efi , apfs_systemsnapshot (to fix “sudo mount -uw /“) , nvenet.kext and IOHIDFamily (single user mode patch)
- @parrotgeek1 LegacyUSBInjector.kext
- acidanthera opencore developers
- @khronokernel ACPI patch for Arrandale Intel architecture through opencore
- @Syncretic telemetrap.kext , AAAMouSSE.kext and tips for adding Legacy USB IOKitPersonalities
- @Barry K. Nathan method of replacing kext already present on a BaseSystem (with ULFO compression), deleting snapshots and gnuefi binaries similar to setvars function
- @cdf OpenCore thread on MacRumors
- @fabioroberto for Nvidia kp fix on dualGPUs Arrandale MacBookPro
- @hvds Legacy USB HID patch debugging and stage2 macOS Installer testing with an external root Legacy USB device
- @Ausdauersportler for testing BaseSystem Legacy USB fix on iMac with upgraded Metal GPU

This is a long thread so I hope someone won't mind answering a couple of questions rather than me going through 250 pages.

I just updated my 2017 MacBook Pro and my 2014 Mac Mini to Big Sur, and I kind of want to update my main system, a 2013 iMac, rather than spending $2,000 on a new system right now. My concern is that I don't fully understand what is in these patches and such that I would need to install to get Big Sur on this Mac and I'm concerned about security and malware.

Is there anything to worry about, from security and privacy standpoint, in these installers and patches?

Also, when there are updates to Big Sur, do I have to go through this process again, or once it is installed can I update like before?

Open Terminal in the Menu Bar
Type /Volumes/Image\ Volume\patch-kexts.sh /Volumes/***

Do I need to manually install Lilu and Whatevergreen along with the AppleBacklightFixup? I have to do that on Mojave and I noticed that the screen is not as bright as on Mojave. I installed Hackintool and it does not show that any of those are installed so I was wondering if I should attempt to install them myself?

1. If you are concerned about that don't install, I am not concerned though.

2. You can't Update the way like on supported Macs, until now we had to download the full installer and go through the whole proces, this might change later on when delta updaters are available, I have my doubt though, it might take quite long to figure out how to install deltas.

It's not that hard for a 2012 machine, I explained what steps are needed in a post a few pages back, search my history for it, I will link to it shortly in this post, will edit this post.

1. Have a USB stick handy, or an external disk, or a dedicated partition.
2. Download the full installer.
3. Download Micropatcher from here.
4. Open Terminal.
5. sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur\ Beta --volume /Volumes/***
*** is the disk label you install the Installer onto, so the USB stick, I dragged and dropped my USB stick onto the terminal, the path will be automatically added.
6. Input your password.
7. It will erase your disk so be aware not to chose the wrong one.
8. Input "Y" if asked to erase.
9. Wait until it's finished, could take a while dependable of what kind of media you use.
10. Unzip the downloaded micropatcher, drag the micropatcher.sh file onto the Terminal window, then enter.
11. In Terminal type sudo and then a space, next drag the install-setvars.sh onto the Terminal window, hit enter.
12. Restart after it is finished.
13. Hold Option key right after restart, keep holding it until you see the bootpicker.
14. Chose the EFI disk, it will instantly shut down.
15. Start up again and again hold the option key for the bootpicker.
16. Chose the USB installer, wait for the installer to open.
17. Chose the disk you want Big Sur installed onto.
18. Wait for probably an hour or so (Have a coffee or a beer in the meantime 🍺 ) if you install from a USB stick, probably half of that if the installer resides on a SSD medium.
19. Restarts multiple times.
20. Almost done.
21. The next step is for WIFI, Wifi does not work OOTB on a 2012 Mini or 2012 MBP....
21a. Restart for the last time after it booted into Big Sur, you may restart before login or after login, makes no difference.
21b. Hold the Option key again to get into the USB installer, there are other ways but this one is the easiest, chose the USB installer, next open terminal from the menu.
21c. Input "/Volume/Image\ Volumes/patch-kexts.sh" and hit enter, when finished enter "reboot", both without the quotes.

Voila...done...a working Big Sur OS.🍺🍺

Edit: Do not forget to thank Barry K. Nathan
BS completed the install but when I do the instruction for wifi in terminal I get an error' No such file or directory

Thank you h9826790,

I followed your tutorial on OpenCore, hit install in Software Update for Big Sur afterwards, and now my Mac Pro 5,1 is on the latest macOS version.

Unbelievable, thanks again.

Edit: switching the BIOS of my R9 280X from flashed to original gives me boot screen!

I've been trying to find info, but will software updates for macOS come through? Is it too early to know for sure?

I did see a software update in system pref show up for Pro Video Formats. I ran it and it worked.

Just installed Big Sur on Mac mini 2012 (i5/16Gb/HD4000/SSD) and Drift stutters. Also the whole interface is a bit laggy and unresponsive: Dock stutters as well as dragging the windows around the screen, while the scrolling in Safari/Chrome is smooth. Will it always be like that or there is a hope for improvement in the future?
On my Mac Mini 2012 (2.3GHz i7 Quad Core w/ 16GB RAM HD 4000 SSD) with 2 FHD displays Drift doesn't stutter at all. On my Hackintosh (w/ i5 Dual Core 7200U 2.5-3.1 GHz 16GB RAM HD 620 SSD) with a 4K display it stutters a little bit. The HD620 is FAR faster than HD4000, and the 7200U is also faster though with half as many cores.

It seems like the issues with drift might be more CPU related than GPU related, but I wouldn't expect much improvement since the HD 4000 isn't officially supported for Big Sur - it isn't likely to get any improvements going forward.
