Imac9,1 Bensova Patched BigSur Boot Trial:

540F8E3F-C792-4F9F-929C-E7014C4EF9C4.jpeg

It’s just amazing what apple changed. Catalina runs interestingly smooth and fast, even without a metal gpu. Because I am waiting for my repaired ati 4850 , would this help and change the boot process somehow?

Migrating to a bigger SSD

I've been running Big Sur 11.0.1 on my late 2013 iMac i5 GT750M without issue thanks to Barry's patcher. I installed it on an external USB 3 128GB SSD really just to test it out. So I got a 500GB SSD and discovered with Big Sur you cannot just clone the startup disk to another drive. Luckily I still have my Big Sur 11.0.1 USB installation thumb drive and used that to install Big Sur to the new 500GB drive also on USB 3. At some point in the installation the migration assistant will pop up and give you options to transfer your data from a Time Machine, Startup disk or Windows machine. I plugged in my USB 3 128GB Big Sur startup disk and selected that. The user accounts, data, applications were all transferred in about half an hour about 70GB or 500,000 files. Everything was restored perfectly and the whole process took about an hour.

Thought I'd share this as I read others suggest you needed a Time Machine backup which would have taken ages when in fact all you need is your previous startup disk.
Is ist better to make a clean install and then transfer your data from the Time Machine backup or can you just install BS over an existing installation of Catalina? I also have BS installed clean on an external SSD just for testing purposes. I want to install it on the internal one when 11.1 is out.

Hello everyone! I'm very excited to announce the release of our patcher:

The goal of this patcher is fairly simple, try to patch as much in memory and modify as little on disk as possible. With this idea, we're able to keep APFS snapshotting, AMFI, SIP, FileVault and other security features enabled without any concerns for stability or security.

This patcher also has a few other benefits:
  • Uses Apple's native IO80211 framework for Broadcom cards
    • This should ensure sleep wake cycles no longer break network scanning
  • Allows for non-permanent, in-memory firmware upgrades on
    • For machines like MacPro3,1, no need to perform APFS ROM patching
  • Allows for boot screen support on 3rd party GPUs without any GPU ROM patching
    • Ideal for iMac and Mac Pro GPU upgrades
  • Only way to boot Arrendale, Lynnfield and Clarkdale based Macs in Big Sur
    • ie. iMac11,1, iMac11,2, iMac11,3, MacBookPro6,1, MacBookPro6,2
  • Incorporates the IOHIDFamily bug patch found on some older Macs
  • Native OTA updates!
    • Firmware updates for newer Machines do not apply, so don't need to worry with that
While this all sounds amazing, there are some limitations of this patcher:
  • Legacy Audio Patches
    • ie. 2011 and older Machines
    • Currently working on AppleALC patches to have this done in memory as well
  • Legacy GPU patches
    • There are plans to add this in for Mojave and Catalina, Big Sur is still unknown
The main users I'd recommend to this patcher are:
  • 2012+ MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis with native GPUs
  • 2008+ Mac Pros with Metal capable GPUs
Other users are more than welcome to use this patcher, and it should work great however audio and GPU issues are the main things that need to be resolved.

To use this program, simple download the release and run the OpenCore-Patcher.command file.

Run option 1 to build the EFI, or option 3 to select another machine model.

With regards to issues, generally the Github's Issue tab or on the Unsupported Macs discord are the best places to reach me. Generally discord is the fastest, and MacRumors is the slowest.(I'm not very active here) My discord name is MykolaG#7153 for easier pings in the discord, we also have a dedicated channel called #opencore-patchers
Your script is the first one to BOOT my IMAC 11,2 with trying to install Big Sur.
I get this ERROR I am guessing it is the stock GPU card?

A first test on my MBP5,2: made a USB stick with your 0.0.3, and it boots fine a pre-existing BS installation on a USB SSD. - This installation is however fully patched on disk. Next is to make one with createinstallmedia and jackluke’s BigSurBasesystemFix only, without his post-install fixes, and try to boot this.

Thanks, that looks very promising.

Take a look at the first post of this thread and read about missing graphics acceleration with your model.

Obviously you missed the important part, FAQ, third question and answer. No Metal, not fun.
im sorry but im new in mac world this is my first try for it and i cant understand all the technical speak, so as i understand for now its better to stay on catalina as everything works just fine on it
but is there any possibility to have BS running on macbook pro 2011 with fully function in the future or its impossible cause if its impossible im thinking about selling mine and get 2012 or 2013 macbook as it doesnt have any problem running the BS

Unlikeley.

And we do not own a glass ball - which surely does not exist outside the Mac world, too. So nobody will promise you to see ever graphics acceleration on pre 2012 hardware without changing the GPU.

Hej, how to fix this ui problem?

Hi there,

Not able to get this patcher to work on the Mac Pro 4,1 > 5,1.

- Fresh install of Mojave
- Downloaded this Patcher
- Ran using "option 1"
- Used Opencore Configurator to mount EFI partition
- Rebooted into Recovery Mode
- Blessed the EFI partition for booting
- Boot screen loaded with OS selector, however no OS will boot
- Shows message "This version of Mac OS X is not supported on this platform."

It's possible that I've done something wrong, but considering there are no instructions, this was my best attempt.

Mac Pro (Early 2009) flashed to 5,1.
ATI Radeon RX580
3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon

Any fix / suggestions?

This is impossible! Only MacPro and iMac 2009-2011 can be modified to have a Metal GPU. These are the only modular systems. You left the PC world.

Working in MacBookPro9,2. Wi-Fi without delay.

So I have my Macbook Pro Retina Mid-2012 15" All setup and working with Wifi. thank you for everyone's help and knowledge in this forum.

I have re enabled SIP as well as Authenticated-root and have had no problems with my Install.

View attachment 927518

the only 2 bugs I can see is on this machine and my new 16" 5600m is that my password works for everything apart from unlocking users & groups and also unlocking the Date & Time menu bar clock settings
how did you reenable sip and authenticated-root? for me it is not working anymore..°°

i disabled displaypolicyd via terminal (sudo launchctl disable system/com.apple.displaypolicyd), but what is actually displaypolicyd good for?

Don’t do it. Two days ago installed it on my 17” MacBook Pro 2.2GHZ i7, it stated I had a 8mb video card:)
going back to Catalina, going to try my Mac Pro 2009 DP and Mac Pro 2010 both have Radeon 580. Anyone running the new Radeon RX 6800 XT in Mac Pro 2010?

New hardware is great, but keeping old hardware useful for longer is better for the wallet.

Plus for now, more apps are likely to work well on Intel hardware vs Apple Silicon. That will change with time.

About the BKE patching, I will need your patched prelinkedkernel? Will I need anything else?

You can use stock BKE without prelinkedkernel and it should work after you patched the BaseSystem.dmg and adding 0xfff boot.efi (also nvram with -no_compat_check) .

But for Legacy USB Mac booting (that are mainly those without graphics acceleration as many reported not advisable for BigSur) you could use prelinkedkernel instead of BKE but you need to replace on USB /Library/Preferences/ folder (external to the BaseSystem): com.apple.Boot.plist

and also the kext (forked) in BaseSystem Extensions folder with those from a full BigSur installation, I use a non clever method that I uploaded them to my GitHub, but if you make the patched BaseSystem from BigSur desktop you can use this Barrykn method: https://github.com/barrykn/big-sur-...n/misc-scripts/cp-full-kexts-to-basesystem.sh

My 21.5 late 2012 iMac resolution was way too small for my ageing eyes! :0)

The Mac mini has been complimented with a Benq 27 inch screen - no need for my glasses at this point!

You are right in software - my 2 year old Canon printer will not install (Canon fault not Apple) - but my gems Office 365 and Adobe work great.

With a Mac app called iMazing, I've imported my iPad apps onto the mini and they work ok - 50 percent didn't launch.
