iMovie, Keynote and some other Apple apps require hardware that supports Metal. Your MBP 8,1 (like mine) does not. Have a look here for a solution.Hello from Spain,
I have installed today monterrey and Big sur, I want to use Imovie and in High Sierra some of the photos from my Iphone 11 doesn’t work alright.
The problem is that neither in monterrey nor big sur, imovie is working.
I have a MacBook Pro 8.1, 2,3gh Intel Core i5 DN, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512Mb, 480gb ssd, 16gb Ram.
What could be the problem?
Should I install Catalina for imovie?
Thanks in advance
Then, if ai do what they say in the link, imovie will work? What is better to install? Big sur, Monterrey o Ventura?iMovie, Keynote and some other Apple apps require hardware that supports Metal. Your MBP 8,1 (like mine) does not. Have a look here for a solution.
Something seems to be faulty with that link. I had tried to lead you to the section "Downloading older non-Metal Apps". Following that link you'll be able to find a DL link for iMovie 10.1.12 which is the last version to work on non-Metal hardware. Then, if ai do what they say in the link, imovie will work? Many Apple apps now have direct reliance on Metal for proper functioning, however legacy builds of these apps still do work in Big Sur. Stay away from Ventura - there are major glitches -, but you should be fine with Monterey. Generally speaking it's a very good idea to read everything on the official OCLP site carefully.
Do you use Microsoft Office? Search this thread for 16.49. That's the last version of Word, that works properly.

I'm just using macOS versions until the end of support and then move on to the next version.11.7.5 is running well for me! I've noticed this thread isn't too active these days. I'm guessing many people have moved on to Monterey or Ventura. For those of you staying on Big Sur, what are your reasons? Does Big Sur work best on your hardware? Are you sticking with it because it has the best compatibility with OCLP? Are you waiting till Apple's Big Sur support ends this October and moving to Monterey at that point? I'm using OCLP on my main Mac, so compatibility and stability are important to me. I thought about waiting till October, but I am temped to move on to Monterey until I feel it's safe enough to switch to Ventura.
Bigsur Updated however, Safari 16.4 not so smooth. Switched to Firefox.

Keeping this as a standby OS. However will not be requiring it as Daily Driver is Ventura OS much smoother & faster.
Revert patches and patch, again! Safari updates need patching, too. Here also problems with safari 16.4. and not with BigSur, because I didn´t upgrade.
Did I read you correctly that you are running Ventura on MacBook Air 2011 with OCLP? Does it work with USB and does it need any external BLE solution? Yes you read correctly as my Signature below I have both BigSur & Ventura (Used OCLP) running super well in my stock OEM Macbook Air 2011 model without any hardware upgrades. Only minor issue is the built in 4GB ram is inadequate and you get some lag.Did I read you correctly that you are running Ventura on MacBook Air 2011 with OCLP? Mine is currently using High Sierra (last supported) and DosDude patched Catalina. The latter is running into bogus code signing rejection of some apps.
I use Monterey and Ventura with OCLP 0.62 on a cMP 5,1 with great success. My main machines are Mac Studio and MacBook Pro M1 plus a 2018 MacBook Pro.
after updating to OCLP to nightly built 0.6.3 Safari issues vanished. Here also problems with safari 16.4. and not with BigSur, because I didn´t upgrade.
I have a similar 2009 21.5” iMac running fine for my needs (basic functions) with the 11.7.5. Update via Apple’s OTA is fine. There is no need to update via OCLP generated installation USB unless there’s some serious issues with the macOS.Hello everyone,
I managed to get Big Sur (and the lowest version of Big Sur (which is 11.5.2) I could get from the Mac servers via OCLP) installed on my 2009 21.5" iMac via OCLP (The installation was a terrible experience really) and this is what I got:

I tried things out for a couple of minutes, then went over to the left corner and opened Software Update and out popped an update for 11.7.5 directly from Apple.
So my questions are:
Should I install it? I do not know enough to know if I should install updated directly from Apple, or do I need to do the update by the OCLP process with the USB drive again?
And is 11.5.2 stable on the iMac 21.5" and I should leave it alone?
Or should I have more aspirations in the future and try to install Montery or Ventura on this 2009 21.5" iMac? I am worried that it might not be able to handle it due to the aging specs, or there might be other new bugs? What do you all think? I'm new to installing new OS'es on aging Macs, looking forward to your replies!

Your 2009 iMac graphics card may be upgradable (MXM). If this is the case, I strongly recommend you to do an upgrade for around $50, which will give you a much better compatible Big Sur by following https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2011-imac-graphics-card-upgrade.1596614/ . If you can upgrade the wifi card as well, you will have a near perfect iMac capable running Monterey (even Ventura with some minor issues).
P.S. my 2009 iMac is not upgradable. The graphics chip is on the main board.
