For Metal (and maybe also non Metal) GPUs that have issues in playing videos on "Safari 15" (Youtube and any other video streaming service) or rendering some graphical websites elements or to fix AirPlay button from a playing youtube video (from Monterey it requires a 4 digits code to authorize the streaming), I just found an undocumented by apple (or anyone else) workaround to fix that:

Code:
defaults write ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist ExperimentalUseGPUProcessForMediaEnabled -bool FALSE

I guess this can be applied only per account, because Safari.app is an application stored on Applications "Data Volume" (not /System/Applications/), so its settings are not stored globally.

Instead this other workaround key "ExperimentalVP9SWDecoderEnabledOnBattery"
, I guess to enable 4k playing on Youtube is already documented.

Yes, the complete list of Catalina supported, but dropped on Big Sur systems is (still) missing. Will be corrected. But you can install Monterey on your iMac. The 660M is a metal enabled Kepler card, the CPU does not make any difference.
To get the best experience a BCM94360xx WiFi/BT card would be a good choice.

Thanks. I just have to think about the offer price now.

Successful installation of Monterey (12 beta1) on an Late 2012 iMac 13,2 with 27" display and 1TB [internal] Fusion Drive) via OCLP (and partial success using modified "version" BKN's 0.0.1 (Monteray) patcher.

OCLP installtion:
Method OCLP 0.1.7 (night build) - fully functional.

Followed instruction as posted on GitHub, leaving default settings while "building" open core.
There are no discernible issues with any aspect of the OS Operation; Bluetooth, Wifi, Ethernet and sleep functions are functioning as expected.

Patcher method: modified "version" BKN's 0.0.1 (Monteray) patcher.

I was able to install Monteray on an iMac 13,2 (Late 2012 iMac 13,2 with 27" display and 1TB Fusion Drive), however, two major problems made this method impractical for use on my iMac 13,2. First, system would crash every time sleep function was invoked; on wake the screen would be dark, with hints of active back-light. Only hard shutdown and restart would bring back the operating system. Others reported same behavior. I was able to trace crash to "Nvidia driver calls", if Apple's automated crash report is accurate. Note that GPU in my iMac is metal-compatible.
The other issue, but less pressing, was lack of Wifi; even after applying appropriate "post-install" patch I could not activate it. Bluetooth appeared active but, at times, exhibited some connection problems.

I erased the whole partition and then used OCLP 0.1.7 to sucesfully install 12 beta1; see paragraph above"

Hope this my be of help.

P.S. I did not try to install 12 beta1 on my MacBook Pro 5,2, just yet. Latest Big Sur does run near-perfectly on that system.
My iMac 13,1 is more or less identical to yours, apart from the screen size.
Major problem after installing OCLP and Monterey Beta 1.
The installation went quite smoothly and most of the apps are running satisfactorily. There appear to be a number of bugs in Safari and the sleep function simply blanks the screen for a few seconds before returning to Monterey.
Problem is that it is no longer possible to boot into Bug Sur on the internal Fusion Drive. System just hangs about half way through the start-up.
Although Monterey provides basic functionality, using beta software on an external HDD connected via USB is not a satisfactory solution for my "production" system. Github has an uninstall procedure for the OpenCore patcher, but I am reluctant to try this without some indication that it has been used to address this particular problem. Would it be better to reinstall Big Sur from the patched USB stick?

Thanks for your experience and that of the poster you replied to. I think that I’ll hold off on buying the 13,2 and look for something a little newer, hopefully with an AMD GPU.

To get any iMac older than a 2017 iMac at this point I'd want to be able to pick it up for next to nothing and I'm saying this as someone whose newest Mac is a 2014 rMBP.

The main reason I'm considering keeping 2011 iMacs going is that I already have them so the only outlay will be to get SSDs whether setting up more externally or taking the risk to open up the Mac and put them inside (and possibly replacing the bluetooth/wi-fi module and if the graphics card fails perhaps that as well).

I think the 2015 iMac might have had soldered RAM?

At this point if I get a new Intel iMac I'd want to get one likely to be supported either officially or through OCLP until Intel Mac support is dropped completely.

There was a 2012 for $35 earlier but it was 80 miles away. I have a lot of 4 and 8 GB DDR3 sticks and four 32 GB DDR4 sticks and an assortment of SSD drives. I could get an M1 but I like a lot of RAM on my systems. An i7-10700K is an option as well. I could just drop in two 32 GB sticks and it should run great for a decade.

I am current and using a cluster of three systems. An i7-10700 with 5 TB SSD, 3 4K monitors and 128 GB, a 2015 MBP 15 on a QHD monitor and a 2009 iMac 27 with 16 GB running Sierra. I have a Dell Studio XPS with 48 GB of RAM but I already have a lot of horsepower, storage and RAM on my desk. I use the iMac mainly for watching videos.

Updated from Big Sur with OC 0.1.7 everything seems ok.

See #557 there is a video instruction. Don,t forget to set auto login and run OCLP after installation and run post install option to enable GPU it's really necessary.
About automatic login, I think it was fixed in the official release of OCLP 1.7, the login screen is working perfectly, you don't need to enable automatic login.

I will test this solution, because on MacBook Air 2012, even 1080p videos are suffering from constant freezes, having to reduce to 720p.

Thank you, I very much appreciate your efforts.

Hi, my imac is probably the same as your, 27' 2012 and I managed to install Monterey with micropatcher. But now it's overheating and noisy. The same problem I had with Big sur. Is there anything I can do to cool it down? I wonder whether other imacs 2012 overheat under Big sur or Monterey.

You can download a program called Macs Fan Control which will allow you to control the fans in your iMac. When it gets really hot I would recommend putting the fans on full blast for about 20 minutes and then gradually slow them down.
You can download the program at this link:https://crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control

Hope this help in the mean time until there is a full patch that is not in beta which will hopefully fix the fan issue.

I wanted to take a minute and thank everyone for their hard week over the past few weeks on working on getting a stable patcher for Mac OS Monterey. I think it is amazing that in the past few weeks people have been able to successfully run the newest Mac OS on their unsupported machines. Keep up the good work everyone and I know that we will have a stable and successful patcher. :)

I thought that I'd stumbled across something - holding the 's' key down after selecting Monterey icon and pressing Enter (OCLP 0.1.8). I got 5 consecutive boots to the desktop while keeping the 's' down the whole time while the verbose lines scrolled past. However, it must have just been a coincidental fluke. I then started hanging again with further restarts to test this theory out. For one try, I held Control+s and did get to a single user 'exit' entry line to carry on. Is this an official OC key command? Anyway, that method painfully slowed the verbose lines down to a crawl, so I don't think I have found any magic bullet in the end. Pity!

For me BigSur will the last Mac OS I will have on my unsupported iMac mid 2011 as you can see from my signature below.

I don't want to now go through wifi/BT card replacement just to get Monetery on my old iMac.

Already the graphics card is upgraded to metal which is indeed a boon, after baking the Original card thrice since it crashed.

I am very much happy with 11.4 BigSur, besides Catalina as backup.

Also with lockdowns and Covid situations cannot import the card. I thank all the developers and those who contributed in making us get our machines working again with new OS and in some case bringing a dead machine alive.

Wishing all the best. Cheers?????

The Apple Silicon stuff is still fairly new and for all the hype about them it's still a first generation product with some compromises (e.g. limited RAM, limited external display support, limited ports etc.).

If we can keep our existing Intel Macs going until the Apple Silicon stuff matures a bit that's great.

I was disappointed that my mid-2014 rMBP didn't make the cut for Monterey though I've only just updated from High Sierra to Mojave on that laptop so it'll be a while before I consider running Monterey on it.

Hello.

I installed Monterey on Xserve 3,1 yesterday via Opencore 0.7.1. Installation was so easy and it seems without any problems, but the only LAN isn't working. (detected but can't plumb up.)
The driver seems to work as builtin, but neither DHCP automatic setting nor manual setting works. someone has the same problems?

BTW, no patches have been applied, just created a USB installer from the downloaded InstallAssistant.pkg and clean-installed it.

Thanks

Edit: Cheap USB-LAN adapter works fine.
