I have a Western Digital NAS, which I bought around 10 years ago. No issues using Time Machine with it. So I agree with your conclusion, that it's something specific to your particular config.

However, do still log a Feedback as it should grab some worthwhile logs that Apple may look at (well, ok, unlikely, but ...) as there could be others out there with your config who'll also have issues if the bug isn't fixed before release.

Yes, I know. And Mints from the same source. So far it has only brought confusion, I should look harder and with more clarity! Helps to know that it is probably just my particular setup.
I can only suspect that something changes with every instance of your VM that confuses Time Machine. Found this:

"The secret I discovered, was to make sure that your VM is suspended or shut down while time machine is running."

And VMWare say you need Auto Protect enabled.

Maybe this will crack it!

I don't know how many reports of a particular bug it takes to get Apple to look at it, but I know I have personally recieved quite a bit of feedback from Apple through the years regarding bug reports I have filed regarding Beta OS's

here's something i haven't seen in a very-long time... on my M2 air (with boom 3D installed), i keep finding that the sound has been panned to the left (!). i have to move it back to center.

could be something with boom 3D (which 'hijacks' the sound and routes to the built-in speakers; allows me to EQ a bit).

anyone else seeing this (with boom or not)...?

I found the web page with this quote. It is about running TM on the host, not within the VM. I wouldn't advise anyone to use TM on the host to backup a VM.
And VMWare say you need Auto Protect enabled.
Unfortunately that is old and not very accurate. It is about turning on VMware snapshots - that is snapshots kept by the host within the VM.

But, thanks for the thought and time to consider my situation.

Here's a fun one. Trying to tear off a tab in Safari TP doesn't work, but leaves these tiny windows everywhere (all at once)!

I'm experiencing that too. I've been trying to track down the cause because it doesn't happen if I create a fresh new User. I've already tried disabling all Safari extensions.
Try disabling Stage Manager? Looks kinda similar to those icons.

Re the problem with not being able to tear off a tab in Safari: I think I got it! It seems to be related to Pinned tabs.

If I have even one pinned tab, the problem exists.

If I remove all pinned tabs, the problem goes away.

There it is! I have one pinned tab…

Setting up Touch ID on a Magic Keyboard does not work in the latest beta. A sheet appears with "Preparing to setup Touch ID..." and then it goes blank and nothing happens.

Mail is having lots of issues for me suddenly. Crashing, beachballing instead of restarting. Works OK if i restart my MacBook, but then borks again. Tempted to delete and reinstall all accounts but hoping it doesn't come to that.

For whatever reason my Studio Display sound only plays for a few seconds then stops since updating to Beta 3 and i cannot update the firmware on the beta, any suggestions? is this happening to anyone else...

for some reason my AW7 is charging much slower than before when connected to my mbp, could it be bug with the beta?

Animations when opening setting windows are not coming up. For example, Settings > Battery > Battery Health no longer has an animation.

After installing today's Beta 6, it seems that attempting to resize any window of a video playing, be it through IINA or Infuse, results in everything freezing until the app is Force Quit from the dock.

Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

Is anyone else's battery draining like crazy on the latest beta? I'm on an intel Mac btw

Yes, mine has since the beta update a couple of weeks ago. It drains very fast on standby/sleep. There was another beta update this morning...hoping that will sort it.
