OK. I installed GMail, Outlook and Edison. NONE would have any setting to push mail. Seems those settings are only in the Settings for Mail on the iPhone.

I did not delete any email account, then reboot and try to re-add in either IOS mail or any of the others, so I cannot tell you if that works.

I did not delete ALL email accounts, delete the MAIL app, reboot and try to add in Gmail or other, so I cannot tell you if that works. Way too much work and truth be told, I am SO disappointed with Apple and their crippling of email I do not know what to do.

If anybody goes so far as to try those, please report. Or links for anyone who tried and succeeded or failed.

There are many people posting about many variations of email issues since 18.1. For me:

I have had email since 1986. I have my own email on a shared server as well as other email accounts I have used for YEARS including Gmail. I have used an iPhone since a month after first release....

IOS 18 Apple Mail removed the ability to PUSH email accounts other than iCloud, Yahoo and one I forgot. Gmail is NOT one of them. Nor any of MY other emails.

Forever and until last week, I could send my self an email and watch the Mail badge update within 2 minutes if not MUCH sooner. Now, Gmail for example (so we don't start blaming my other email accounts and servers) are FETCH only. There is no drop down option for PUSH any longer for it. And even if PUSH is globally selected, it will only fetch unless iCLoud, Yahoo and that one other. The quickest update interval for FETCH is 15 minutes.

Now Fetch will try every 15 minutes. If you receive an email and it is close to that 15 minute fetch, it might appear push is working. But if fetch had just run, it could be 15 minutes until the badge changes and a notification for the email appears. And I, as others, can often get double the number of emails on the badge than are really there.

This is...

So, unless I have missed something and I doubt I have, Apple quietly emasculated Apple Mail.

The reason some can get mail under power plugged in AND on WiFi, is that fetch works automatically ONLY in that scenario.

MY gut, unfortunately says Apple is not going to fix this one. They likely think they are saving battery power. They will likely claim no other email supports push.

I'd love to know what others hear and if there is a great third party email app for multple IMAP accounts with push and other rich features.

For someone that has had mail since 1986 would know that Gmail was the one who removed PUSH functionality because of licensing issues with Microsoft. This was done MANY years ago and many IOS versions and nothing to do with iOS18. I know because it was when I switched to originally Outlook and now iCloud mail because I needed push capabilities.

Fetch intervals has the been the only option for Gmail and many others for many years now in the native iOS Mail app.

I RARELY use my Gmail account. So never noticed. But my other accounts pushed until IOS 18. Period. They no longer do. and 15 minute fetch is unnaceptable.

Even if I used Gmail more often on IOS (usually on my PC in Outlook when needed) where would I have been alerted to the change?

I’m finding another problem. Pulling down to refresh mail frequently doesn’t work. This happens if I receive a new email shortly after opening the mail app. The only way to download new email is to kill the mail app and reopen it.

Push functionality is determined by the email provider and not Apple. I believe it's due to needing to be backed by Microsoft Exchange. Maybe you are confusing push vs sync but iOS18 didn't remove PUSH from a provider.

@achappy i am not confusing PUSH and SYNC. At all. Push was implemented for my two primary email accounts until I updated to IOS 18. Your mileage might vary. It no longer appears as an option. I might have missed the Gmail change as, for example, for every 100 emails I get daily, 1 might be Gmail. So its delay was not noticeable for me. I still might have expected a change log or release not to advise me of that change. I read those.

MY email providers did not change one iota.

I appreciate you trying to help. But I don't think you are as informed as you think you are. Dovecot email has worked with IOS mail for years. They have not made any changes. IOS has.

But thanks.

@Morac: I find the same from time to time. EVEN what we have left is spotty at best.

Reading dozens of forums. Many say GMail and Outlook apps still work as expected with any IMAP email. Problem is, I am not seeing a PUSH option in those apps. Only in Settings/Maill app. So I am trying to discover if IOS mail must be removed before GMail or Outlook will work as desired in IOS. 18. And awful lot of work if not.

OK. Gonna go try to get some sun today.

Good luck all.

OK. Had to try one more thing.

Added an outlook email account. It pushes as expected and near instantly. So I now know the IOS email app can use push. It just rejects some or most IMAP accounts since IOS 18.

To get push in the iOS Mail app requires the email provider to support iOS Mail app push which requires registering the email site with APNS. The way this works is the email provider notifies Apple using a special APNS notification when a new email arrives and then Apple sends a behind the scenes Mail app push notification down to the phone which triggers the Mail app to fetch for emails for that account. iOS does not support the industry standard IMAP idle which is why most email providers don’t support push this way. There’s only a handful that do including: iCloud, Outlook and Fastmail. Other major providers like GMail and Yahoo used to, but haven’t for over 10 years now.

Getting “push” in an app like Outlook or Gmail is a slightly different mechanism. It also uses APNS, but uses the normal app push notification along with background refresh, so it works like any other app.

There’s a third mechanism which uses a constant Outlook Exchange connection but that’s primarily used by business email accounts with their own mail servers.

None of that changed in iOS 18.

Many of you are talking push/fetch problems. Are any of you having IMAP syncing problems since 18.0/18.01 whereby you don't see all the sent email in your sent mail folders in 'MAIL' if you send from phone on your iPad/Mac, and vice versa?? My hosting says its an Apple issue, and I'm inclined to agree as it's never happened until iOS18

Any update?
Sorry mate, thank you for the reminder as I totally forgot.

I've just checked and it's all super strange. I have some emails going back to 2022, but then a lot of emails that I most certainly deleted have gone. I'm very confused right now.

I'm going to delete all the emails currently in trash and try again. I'm gonna set auto delete to the minimum allowed.

Right,as expected, I can confirm the emails didn't auto-delete. I'd set the auto delete for 24 hours and they're still there.

It's no biggy for me as I'll just periodically delete them myself.

Sick to death of seeing this when I’m trying to view emails. The only way to fix is to close and re-open the mail app.

Thanks for or the update. I agree with you but it’s a bug nevertheless.
No worries mate.

What is a worry though with 18.2 is that I can no longer see how many new junk email has arrived. Previously it'll tell you the numbers.

This is an issue as sometimes non junk emails also go into that folder.

I can of course go in and check periodically, but it ain't half a pain!

Can’t believe there are so few posts on this. Thought lots of people would be affected by this.

I just updated my iPad Air 4 to iPadOS 18.1.1 this morning. Mail was working fine right before the upgrade, now it's not working at all.

I was aware of the issue as my brother has been having issues with it on his iPhone. I decided to upgrade my iPad so I could test without his involvement.

I run the mail server for our email which allows me to have both client and server-side access. I performed my initial testing with my normal user account and, as expected, nothing. I decided to create a new email account on the server for testing purposes. What I found interesting was there are no entries in the log file for the new account after the initial account creation. It's as if the device isn't even attempting to make a connection to the IMAP server.

Apple really needs to correct this, it's a huge error and I am surprised it still exists in iOS / iPadOS 18.1.1

For me, the latest version of iOS, 18.1.1, is no better than the previous version, 18.0.

I’m tired of opening emails to see the downloading icon wheel forever until I quit and reopen Mail again.

I can’t recall such a buggy iOS in years.

I finally got a 2nd tier Apple support to grab logs from my device after opening a case about 10 days ago. I’m supposed to hear back in 2 days, but from past experience I don’t think the engineers will respond.

Well, i can't add any useful information, but i've read everything here. I'm still on 17.7.2 and am interested how the bug squishing is going on in iOS 18, cause sooner or later i'll have to update. I think a lot of users still on 17 have an eye on the 18 discussions. 👍

I am disappointed Apple isn't putting forth any effort to address this issue. It's significant, sufficiently so that I am avoiding upgrading my iPhone to iOS 18. But, like you, at some point we'll have to upgrade.
