The thing is, over here in Europe it’s difficult to get attached to these North American teams. I kinda like and follow the Red Sox because I lived in Boston for a year when I was young but I don’t really have a stake in how well or how badly the rest of the teams do. I think that is a key problem that North American sports have with expanding their reach globally… the rest of the world plays football with a round ball, on the ground, and baseball is a very minor pastime.

Well, I for one do not want both teams to have fun. The dbags must be humiliated!

Wow. Where is this vitriol coming from? It’s a game … entertainment … the national pastime … it’s not life or death.

Regardless, the DBacks cannot be humiliated... they squeaked into the playoffs, seeded #6, swept Milwaukee, swept the Dodgers, came from down 3-2 to win the last 2 in Philly... IF they get swept (highly unlikely), they have already overachieved this season... and they will be back next year.

But knock yourself out. I’m done with this.

As a life long SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS fan I reserve the right to hate any other team from the NL West...

so ...

Hahaha. Yes, sports do seem to stir up attachment and hate. If there is anything the last ten years of Buddhism have taught me it’s that those things are ultimately futile. Letting go, not clinging to things, not craving is the way.

HA... I still have so much hatred and loathing of that football team from SF... there is a certain play, and it even has a name, "The Catch" that still burns and draws out the white hot anger towards that team. But I am not bitter... :)

I hated the Diamondbacks a lot more in the late 90s and early 00s when they spent lavishly and unsustainably to achieve their success, and some of their key players back then were ex-Giants who turned unlikable (Bob Brenly and Matt Williams), not to mention Curt Schilling. This current team was built more organically, with good young players who haven't earned my ire.

Still, I'd vastly prefer seeing the Ranger win.

Americans get attached to European football clubs for various random reasons. For most, it's probably something about a particular club or player, for others it could be due to the city or region. I'm a Man Utd fan because I saw George Best play in the NASL when I was a kid, one of United's famous captains and #7's shared my (not very common in the US) surname, and I grew up to love the Manchester music scene, and there was a lot of overlap between their music and sporting worlds. Similar factors ought to be in play for any European choosing an MLB, NBA, or NFL team to follow.

That play still remains the most singular sporting experience I watched on TV or in person. Man Utd's two stoppage time goals to win the UCL Final in 1999 does come very, very close.

Don't worry: I'm still bitter about those Steve Young-led 49ers teams who always lost to the Cowboys in the NFC Championship game. I haven't followed the NFL very closely for the past 20+ years, though. I'll only bother watching a game if the 49ers get to the NFC Championship game or the Super Bowl, and it's far from life or death for me.

Its true that American round-ball football teams have attracted various top European players over the years, but I don’t think that’s as true for aging stars in American sports finding a home in European clubs.

But my dad follows various Dutch players in the American leagues, he’s probably as much of a fan of American sport as you’re likely to find over here, he’ll also watch anything from the Red Sox to the Celtics to the Bruins to the Patriots. All the Boston teams, basically.

It's only sports and it doesn't consume my life. ;)

As a casual Buddhist myself I try not to overthink things, and again, it's only a game and I enjoy it more when I can find a reason to root, or follow an event, when my teams aren't involved.

I’ve been with the Rangers since they smashed the Astros. Have always thought the Astros were a bit too full of themselves. WS Game 4 has been amazing. The pressure on the pitchers is like carrying a mountain on your shoulders. Everything is great until the batter wings one out of the park…
