Windows will get better. MS actually does bug fixes and performace updates.
I find Windows to already be pretty solid in terms of bugs and performance, it's the UI and features where I find it sorely lacking and if Windows 11 is anything to go by, I am not hopeful for significant improvement.

For example, every time I use the file explorer in Windows 10, I am disappointed with how it's missing really useful features, like automatically calculating folder sizes or quick look.

Monterey size is 12.3 GB or something close to that. That is BIG. Even Windows is only 5.4GB.
Windows 11 is smaller than macOS 12, never thought you see that huh.

Mojave was only 6GB, when did it double?

There used to be a good app that pulled out one of the code bases when they moved to Intel. I remember using it to save a LOT Of space from removing the PPC code from apps on my Intel mac.

mmm. Ok but Catalina was 8GB. How do you explain that?

Especially as it doesn't even have real new features. There's barely anything (of value) new yet it keeps breaking more and more.
The last feature that actually made a difference was Quicklook. Such a great feature. Everything else I either ignore or turn off. I'm sure some users find other features useful, but I don't.

After all it's an OS. I spend my time there just organizing files and launching apps from the dock. What else is there to do there. Neither of those 2 things have seen much or any improvement.

Universal Control is probably my favorite macOS productivity feature since Quicklook.

It's become second nature for me to swipe over to the iPad and copy something from messages or mail (that I keep open on the iPad) and then paste it on the Mac.

Same most things they have added IMO are not very helpful, has a app that do it better, or are SO rarely helpful I forget they exist.

Have to ask with IMAP email sync across devices, and messages also on the Mac, why would you even need to do that?

Pretty sure Universal clipboard (part of continuity) was around before Universal Control

Because I don’t have to run mail and messages applications on the Mac, and those are the two apps I’m checking in my iPad when I get up from my desk and take it with me to another room.

I actually started working like that when I was watching TV and received an email with Pantone and CMYK values that I was waiting for. I went to my office and plopped the iPad down, got on the Mac, and started copying values from the email into my project in the Mac — without wasting time launching mail and finding the email among the 5 active email accounts I use.

Since then, using the Mac keyboard and trackpad I’m already touching to invoke Command-C on the iPad to Command-V on the Mac is sublime — and not at all the same UX as using Universal Clipboard alone.

It is a disaster, my m1 air sometimes reboots overnight while in sleep mode, if I run out of battery instead of saving everything it just shuts down, iCloud isn't syncing, the amount of documents I have lost because of its instability is ridiculous. I would not relay on this machine in a professional environment.
Plus all the issues with Apple Watch not unlocking, personal hotspot not working etc. It is really the bottom end of apple.

Unfortunately I think until people keep buying their product we won't see any effort to get their software fixed. On top of that YouTubers or tech websites like this one are just kissing apple's feet and can't publish a single article about how disastrous their software is.
We need to make some noise, otherwise there is not gonna be any change.
Just wanted to bump this because I agree with this user.

Plus I would add:
- I personally had to de-sync Safari on my Mac since I randomly starting experiencing issue such us: tabs closing automatically, randomly goes back a page or closes window when opening new tab while typing...
- Memory leak: for each app, it doesn't matter what kind of use I do of the app: if I keep open some app they will slowly keep using more Memory over time, till I have to close the app and re-open it again because my MacBook become too slow to do anything. It happens with Notes (sometimes my MacBook Pro uses something like 1GB of memory just for Notes in background), Reminders, Safari (especially if I leave even a single YouTube video open), Music.

I do contacted Apple Care and we do some troublesolving, they had me to install a SW on my machine, run a diagnostic, send them the log, I am still waiting their response even though the Apple Care already told me that I will have to probably re-install a fresh version of Monterey OS and it may solve my problems.

I am really disappointed with this OS. 👎

Without jumping through clean installs and diagnostics, have you created a new user on the Mac to see if your problems persist?

I initially migrated from High Sierra to Monterey to retain my music library. However, I ran into issues so the first thing I did was create a new user, delete the migrated user, and manually import my iTunes music library into Apple Music.

The issues did Not persist on the new account.

I strongly believe that many issues can be resolved by starting with a new user.

That seems like a bizarre way to work, but if it works for you great, I couldn't work that way. My Mac desktop is the central repository for my work, iphone, iPad are just nice to have mobile reference points to monitor stuff or make the quick reply.
Always interesting to see how people leverage stuff in ways you wouldn't.

It's a 12.9" which works surprisingly well off to the side on my desk. Even though I'm not maxing out the Mac Studio at all, it feels nice to offload some of the more mundane stuff onto the iPad. At first I was thinking about ways to use universal control, but now it's second nature like hitting the spacebar in finder for a Quicklook file preview.

I could always use the iPad on the couch, but now it feels like I'm grabbing a monitor from the Mac and taking it with me.

I guess the notion of Apple - "it just works" really meant - it just works to make you pull your hair out. External devices detaching, monitors changing from 60hrtz to "40-60 hrtz," massive consumption of memory that appears not to be released timely and the list goes on. While we can see Apple being slow, it is sadder that the "experts" we see on Youtube have not loudly called out Apple in a manner to get Apple's interest.

...maybe because not everyone feels the way you do? lots of people are enjoying monterey (even acknowledging that there are bugs; there are always bugs, with every OS version).

but i can work, play. my important apps are happy. and universal control is awesome. so, you can take on your issues, get help, call apple, or... revert to an older OS; or you can just complain... 🙄

I also think Unversial Control was great.

Because not everybody is experiencing it. I do agree that Apple should be quicker. Let's not forget Apple are not gods.

I can say "IT JUST WORKS" was a thing siad by steve and its marketing crap. No one ever said that since steve passed away in apple's keynotes.

If you think macOS is a mess, head over to Windows 11 land and see how you fare. I tried Windows 11 for a week and the taskbar kept crashing and everythoing was unfinished. memory leaks happen on windows too. Now Microsoft is moving most of its apps to PWA. ugh.

I think it is unfortunate that people settle for mediocrity. Apple should be anything but mediocre. Honestly, it looks like they took a page out of Gate's book on - promote and sell it now and either fix it or make good on promises later. I wouldn't be having this conversation if I didn't have Apple products which should indicate I prefer them over Micro$oft.

Wow, glad you really love your Apple stuff. Wow, some of us have been around since the beginning of Apple and into PC DOS world and one would hope that by 2022 a company that is as accomplished as Apple would do a bit better by their customers and not depend on fanbois to defend them. I wouldn't make the comment if I didn't think Apple could do better and in the past, they have done some impressive feats but releasing an OS with sufficient challenges for many is not something we would hope to see from them. Imagine that - an OS that won't play well with certain monitors that did play well with earlier OS and unified memory being touted as if it is something new (recall that on board graphics is not much different in how it uses the same memory as the CPU)...yet we see memory challenges even for Mini with 16 gigs of RAM. By all means enjoy but don't discount those that expect a bit more and even referenced the past where Apple was by far more plug n' play without serious issues.

you know nothing about my mac experience. i've been around since 7.6; did 15 years of (freelance) mac support in nyc. am not a fanboy, just... a fan. and i agree that things could be better... but they're still pretty good right now.

don't discount those who enjoy using their macs, on monterey, in the present. i get that you think it 'used to be better'. i disagree; i think it used to be simpler; but i would not give up monterey, for, say, snow leopard (as good a moment as that was).

i personally welcome progress, change. if you don't, you can always go back to an older mac, an older OS. for the rest of us, there are things to appreciate, and things to fix... and this is a (sometimes) great forum to get (& give) help.
