Anyone with an iPhone 3G can confirm if the version 1.4 of this app really went a little bit faster?

3. The app seems less responsive. I tap on an item and it highlights and then a second later is actually selected. I've got a 3GS and did not have this problem with 1.3.

That worries me. This is exactly what drove me nuts on my iphone 3G. The button presses were so slow that I'd think the program froze up. I hope its not that bad. I'm downloading it to my iphone 3gs right now.

Very nice and solid update!

I'll give it a workout today with a 120+ mile round trip, and then tomorrow with a 428 mile trip :D

I really like now how it will show all traffic listed in a single (scrolling) screen for the area, even before putting in a route.

Google search is nice, no problems for my area.

I'll be testing this both on a 3G and a 3Gs in the next two days.... So far, button response on my 3Gs is near instant....no delays here.

OK, got 1.4. Here are a few impressions:

1. Start-up does not seem faster ('Navigon' splash screen to actually using functions)

2. GPS availability is definitely faster (presumably because it is now utilizing triangulation initially instead of waiting for a true GPS lock)

3. The app seems less responsive. I tap on an item and it highlights and then a second later is actually selected. I've got a 3GS and did not have this problem with 1.3.

4. Having Google Local is a killer feature

Downloading right now, but your 1st and 3rd points make me nervous. The app very laggy as it is on my 3G, I can't even imagine it getting worse. I was really hoping they would improve the code on this for this release. :(

Worse case, I go back to Tomtom. The latest release has a lot of stuff missing from the first one, and runs very, very smoothly on a 3G.

Official Gripe list:

Ok, now that I've had a chance to run through all the new features here are the results.

1. Google Local is very cool and definitely makes up for Navigon's piss poor poi database.

2. While the splash screen may be a nanosecond faster to load, the application itself seems a bit more sluggish. Specifically zooming in and out of maps on my 3GS seems a bit slower. Some button presses now have a bit of lag. Although the lag is not nearly as bad as it was with 1.3 on my iPhone 3G.

3. Fix the Damned contact function already!! The Damned thing still cant parse simple addresses which are in USPS standardized format if they are coming out of your contacts list.

4. Ok, route list is fine and dandy, but what I NEED is to be able to pick part of the route and hit "avoid" and have it avoid that road or turn.

If they fix those final issues then I'd be able to use Navigon for 100% of my trips.

2. agreed ... achieved a lock inside

3. having a few lags on 3GS, this concerns me ... performance, preformance, performance!!!

4. agreed, but having some search issues w/ default 'near current location' - coming up w/ "No POIs" ... i wonder if the 'near current location' search diameter/distance is small ...

When I use Google Local Search and search for places in current location, it just shows "no POI nearby found, but when I input "Sunnyvale" or a address the Where field it search nearby location fine.. Has anyone else experience this?

Exact same thing happening for me.

Type anything into Navigon's Google search box and no POI is ever found near the "current location". Close Navigon and open up Google Mobile or Maps, enter anything in the search box and all the usual results flow right in, as always. Even Navigon's own iffy built in POI search returns nearby results, but their Google search always returns "No POI nearby found".

Totally stock 3G S, busy area with zillions of nearby POIs, GPS location locked in, etc, etc. Fixing 1.3's POI weakness was the main reason I was looking forward to 1.4. Very dissapointing.

Strange. I'm not having this issue. I've left the current location in and searched for a few different things and it's working perfectly. I'm VERY happy with the POI situation now. It was horrible before.

I like to sit at home and preplan my trips, Navigon doesn't let me look at turn by turn list while sitting at home. Is there a way around this?

Did a search for a small family owned restaurant that moved literally just a few weeks ago and it found the new location just fine. This is awesome!

Still trying to figure out why current location isn't working quite as i would expect ... maybe not passing Lat/Long over since i'm sitting indoors

i'll keep working it ... any other suggestions would be appreciated

you can ... under "More" and "Route" ... and then if you want the turn-by-turn list in Route Planning, you need to begin the 'simulation' ... it's there under options

Google search in 1.4 has worked totally fine for me, even if I am indoors and have no GPS reception. The search just uses my most recent location. I did a quick search for "food" and everything around me that I thought would pop up did - way more than would come up for the standard Navigon POI search.

A new area opened up nearby a few weeks ago with all of kinds of stores and restaurants, the Google search in Navigon found them just fine.

The only thing that hasn't worked for me is searching for something state-wide. If I put "New Jersey" in as the "Where", it didn't find anything, but if I put the city in, it found everything fine.

No clue why this isn't working for everyone, but it's been great for me and really puts Navigon over the top.

If they put in "avoid road" and "find alternate" options and fix the toll-road problems, this app would be damn near perfect.

agreed, and I'd throw into your list, Google Local Search "on route POI" (granted you can use "Add Interim Destination" but i like 'on route' stuff) ... the current "on route POI" leaves a bit to be desired

google search works fine for me no problem like the others said just leave the location space blank and it should be fine.... but i think their missing something..
let's say i do a search via google(in navigon) for a best buy it shows all the best buy near me but no phone number to call... if you search for a poi within the app it gives you the option to call the place... we really need that or else its 2 search one for the number via google(safari) and the other for the address via google (Navigon)

within the app, I don't see Podcasts showing up (needs to be added) ... but you can begin a podcast outside app, then start Navigon up and use navigation - podcast continues to play and that Podcast is controllable w/in app

yup that i knew already.... i guess it's still to be fix!! oh well better than nothing!!

Good call, that definitely needs to be in there for 1.5. If they could get the iPod controls into the map view like TomTom does, that would be great too, but I'm just being greedy.

The broken Google nearby search issue I mentioned above is starting to get some airtime in the app store's customer reviews. It's a bug. Also just noticed that 1.4 still won't exclude toll roads even if they're set on "forbid".

I mentioned in my customer review that Navigon has a nice platform, but needs to get busy sweating the details. I travel extensively and accurate nearby POI info and toll road avoidance are biggies for me.

Actually, 1.4 DOES show a turn by turn list now. Once you start navigating, click "options" and under "route" you will see "turn by turn" list.

Dumb question, but have you tried a reboot of your phone? I have a habit of doing this after each Navigon update. I didn't try anything before the reboot so I can't say for sure if that made any difference. In fact, I've heard some say that they need to uninstall & reinstall for some issues they've had in the past. I've never had to do that but it might be worth doing if it's not too inconvenient.

This may sound weird, but you guys having problem with the google search... you are leaving the location part BLANK right? You're not typing "current location" into that are you?

I don't know what to say... Google Search is working absolutely perfect for me, and I've tried it in two different areas today. The results are sorted by distance and are definitely based on my current location when I leave "Where" blank (i.e., the default is current location). This is with and without a GPS signal.

I am trying to break it, but I can't. It just works. I am going on a trip this weekend, so I will try some more then, but as of right now I have to give a big thumbs up to Navigon.
