Folks who are having issues, have you done clean installs? Due to space issues on my phone I had to remove 1.3 before I could install 1.4, but I'm having absolutely no issues using the Google Local search function from 'current location'.

Actually, 1.4 DOES show a turn by turn list now. Once you start navigating, click "options" and under "route" you will see "turn by turn" list.

One problem I've noticed...

If I'm stuck (really stuck) in traffic and there is a ramp coming up, the app is in the take this ramp mode which doesn't have the Options button and can't be exited. There is no way to get to options, hence no way of seeing turn by turn, and worst, no way of checking traffic messages.

If you tap the screen when Navigon is in reality view, it will take you back to the map view. Then you can tap the options button.

My understanding is that you can tap the screen when the ramp graphic is on the screen and it should return to the normal navigation screen.

Actually, it looks like they fixed this for 1.4 - when reality view comes up, the options button is still visible in the top right.

A lot of times, you may have to tap to clear reality view, and then tap the top of the screen again to clear the green exit sign text, as it may be blocking the options button. Once you tap both, the Options button is visible again. However, it looks like reality view will now still show the options button if you need it.

OK, I felt the need to post in here again as I have been bagging on Navigon for a while due to it's performance on the 3G. Well, I went home at lunchtime, and synced the new version to my phone, and used it on the way back to work.

First impressions as far as features and stuff? I love it. I can see why I prefer it over Tomtom for functionality. The Google local search worked very, very well, finding anything I could throw at it. The route list is nice, but I must say, IT'S ABOUT TIME!

With those few things said, it's still laggy during button presses, however, and maybe it's because I rebooted the phone after installing, it does seem a BIT snappier. Not nearly as quick as Tomtom, which runs faster than notes, LOL, but still, very usable. I also found the iPod functionality to work better. Previously, when I would fire up the iPod controls, it was very painful. Took maybe a full minute to actually let me do anything. Now, it was a few seconds, maybe. Also, as a side note on the iPod stuff. I am VERY glad to see the audiobook setting. This worked out great for the podcast I was listening to on the way back to work. I couldn't stand having the volume toned down when the thing was talking, as it toned it down too much. Now, it just pauses whatever your playing, and, for podcasts and such, I think that is a much better way.

Anyway, in the end, after this update, it is absolutely my preferred GPS app. I still think however, that they can work on the speed of the interface. If Tomtom can run quickly and smoothly, so can this.

Good point about the Audiobook thing. When I drive I'm always listening to podcasts. Free Talk Live or Car Talk or This American life. Having the option to pause playback is critical, I'm so glad they added it. If they add specific road avoidance I'll be able to delete TomTom off my phone. I've since upgraded to a 3GS so the speed is tolerable now. But for my wife's 3G iphone I'll definitely still load TomTom for it's speed.

1.4 is definitely faster for loading and getting to menus and stuff. It is also way faster when recalculating routes if you deviate.

Are you really able to get the iPod controls to work? If I open them and tap the "add songs" button, it just hangs and usually does nothing. Sometimes it will bring up my iPod library, but even then it will just hang and eventually the app either crashes entirely or just goes to a black screen. This is on a 3G. I usually just open the iPod beforehand and start playing music. If I do that, the Navigon iPod controls work great.

So far, at least on my short drive to work, things seemed to function nicely regarding the iPod controls. Here's hoping it stays that way!

I have been very concerned about the latency of, well, everything Navigon on the 3G...

I hope these problems and features are resolved/added on the 3G with 1.4 (Im downloading it right now):

1 - Keeping recent destinations saved instead of not logging them
2 - Keeping new favorites saved instead of not saving them
3 - Latency of the interface
-Start up time
-Time between pressing a button in Navigon and the program responding
4 - Ipod usability
-Causes program to crash
-Add playlist option from Ipod instead of selecting all or individual songs
5 - Stuttering during audio cue for directions
6 - The volume of the audio cue for directions is not saved (I have to set it each time otherwise it's very very very loud)
7 - GPS signal acquisition time

1) Never had a problem with this... seems to work fine in 1.4.
2) Also never had a problem with this... I added a favorite today and used it to navigate later on.
3) Both of these are definitely addressed in 1.4. Start up time still sucks, but it's a little faster. Latency from pressing a button until the response is much better.
4) I have found the iPod usability to still be bad. They have not changed how you add songs. I find it better to launch the iPod, pick my playlist, and then start Navigon.
5) Didn't really test this out yet, but voice stuttering is still there even though it isn't as bad.
6) My voice volume always saves.
7) Much improved in 1.4.

I just downloaded 1.4 for my 3G and as I always do with major applications I rebooted before using it.

My initial impressions are that boot time is not any faster that I could notice (although I didn't time it) but once up and running everything works much more quickly and better than before. Entering menus no longer incurs a few seconds delay etc...

google feature seems killer...

Looking forward to putting it to the test! Now Navigon, please for the love of all that is holy sort out traffic in the UK!!!

Exact same thing happening for me.

Type anything into Navigon's Google search box and no POI is ever found near the "current location". Close Navigon and open up Google Mobile or Maps, enter anything in the search box and all the usual results flow right in, as always. Even Navigon's own iffy built in POI search returns nearby results, but their Google search always returns "No POI nearby found".

Totally stock 3G S, busy area with zillions of nearby POIs, GPS location locked in, etc, etc. Fixing 1.3's POI weakness was the main reason I was looking forward to 1.4. Very dissapointing.

Same problem: this just posted in Facebook:
"NAVIGON Thanks for all of your feedback. Great that to hear that you are happy with the new features :)
Regarding Google Local Search: Some of you are having problems. We could investigate all your feedback and we found a little server bug. We are working on it and it should be fixed very soon.
Thanks to all of you!"

Dumb question, but have you tried a reboot of your phone? I have a habit of doing this after each Navigon update. I didn't try anything before the reboot so I can't say for sure if that made any difference. In fact, I've heard some say that they need to uninstall & reinstall for some issues they've had in the past. I've never had to do that but it might be worth doing if it's not too inconvenient.

yep ... still 'no POIs found', but news of server issue sounds hopeful (and btw, i am getting a periodic server issue message as well so that makes sense)

This may sound weird, but you guys having problem with the google search... you are leaving the location part BLANK right? You're not typing "current location" into that are you?

yes (but must confess, i tried writting in 'current location' too - at this point i'll try anything)

How much is traffic in the new version? Is it on sale too?

Traffic (from INRIX) is available; but not discounted at this time ... just wait a bit, most likely will

Hopeful news. Thanks for the heads-up, James.

Cheers,
Arch

ditto! Thanks James

Hey those of you having problems with the Google search, give it a try now, leave the where field bank and see if it's working now.

Anyone here having any issues with re-adding the traffic to this update after they do a clean install? I just want to make sure before I delete it off of my phone.

Due to space issues (16gb phone with 2.8gb free), I had to delete 1.3 and install 1.4 clean, too. Afterwards you'll hit more / extras and be able to add your existing traffic pkg back in without charge.

Cheers,
Arch

Tried iPod playback in 1.4 on my way home tonight... it's still awful. My music stuttered pretty much the whole time, and it made the voice instructions cut out occasionally. They've really got to get this taken care of. It is so, so bad.
