A lot of people must be *imagining* the
same issues for this to start getting some press.

So much for the trolls.

<snip>
Taken the computer to the Apple store and gotten a replacement computer with no luck and issue still existing on the new one. It should be noted my first was shipped to me from Apple and the second was picked up in a store several days later.

Don't take the arguers here too hard Billy - remember, you're posting in a forum filled to the gills with fanboys who will defend any decision made by Apple and every Apple product as though you were insulting their mothers, no matter how severe or obvious the fault. There are some helpful people here but even more seemingly inexplicable zealots.

If I had gotten a new machine and it didn't work, and I went and swapped it for another one and that one didn't work either, I'd be posting in the same tone as you - your opinion that others should think twice before buying, and your posting it here, is perfectly reasonable, IMHO. (That said, I still have my order in and my fingers are crossed that whatever this is, they get it worked out before the i7s start shipping!)

Jim,

Thank you for that very intelligent post.

I will go as far to agree that the subject of this
thread was a bit severe. However, I sympathise
with everyone having problems with their 27"
iMac and I am happy that there is traction being
gained in bringing the problem to Apple's attention
so that hopefully the i5 and i7 models will not have
any of these issues.

Amen :apple:

I got the 27", running all day, crunching numbers, doing graphic design, running FCP encoding video, transcoding audio, surfing the net. Everything is perfect, blazing fast, apps open without even one bounce in the dock. I barely press the Safari icon, and BOOM, it's right there, all my bookmarks open in less than a second, applications launch and run in the background and I don't feel one bit of slowdown - it's so fast, I just cannot keep up myself!

Then I woke up. I remembered that I don't have a 27" iMac yet, because they are lagging behind with the quads, and I want to buy the i5. Anyhow, I just wanted to report that in my dream, the 27" iMac ran perfectly! No lag at all.

Anybody else? What were your experiences, real or imagined?

You're describing my exact experience but I'm not dreaming. I own.
My new Mac is the bomb (in a good sense).

Chiming in toi report the same issue on a new, week old iMac 27''. Runs great, then after an hour or so, things get choppy and I experience lag. A restart cures all, but is a temp fix.

I'm assuming a 10.6.2 update will clear this issue up, because it is affecting most people out there. Maybe its a gpu issue? My question is, I have til Nov 5 to return this machine. If Apple can't fix this issue with a software update, can I still return it to the Apple store for a refund after 11/5??

I would say no. Best you could hope for at that point is a new machine.

I agree that 10.6.2 will fix all, I'm sure apple would have noticed this if it was a hardware problem.

Ok, mines ( 27 inch standard) is still in the box, got it two days ago. Have not opened it. Can I take it back to get a full refund?

This does not look good for Customers. Overheating? Jerky sound? Flickering screen?

That's why this is most likely a software issue, I believe the update will be released next week.

What this means then is that your current machine is not worth the money spent on it because while you wait for the update, the value of your machine is going down. What Apple should do is have a recall.

Wouldn't a software problem suggest that the same thing should be happening on other machines running this rev.? Is that the case - are we hearing a lot of similar reports on other machines? Otherwise it would suggest either hardware or drivers specific to the 27, wouldn't it?

The OP has gone through 3 machines in a row now with the same problem. It could go both ways but I'm leaning towards software because I don't believe apple would be foolish enough to build something that would require every user to return their computer to the store. They would have noticed this from the beginning I would assume if it's a hardware problem.

People are not exempted from making huge mistakes. With humanity, mass error is possible.

After reading the OP's post I went and watched some videos on Hulu on my 27" iMac and found the video very choppy. It was like I was drunk or something, very laggy.

Now, how should this computer work? Should it run as good as any television [LCD, DLP, Plasma] playing the same material? I don't know, that's why I'm asking because this is a computer and not a television but I would think that it should run very good watching any kind of material.

I didn't notice any choppy audio but the video being that choppy was hard to watch. I did call Apple tech support earlier today after I made a support call late last night because my wife had mentioned how the computer felt slow and wondered why she was seeing these rainbow spinning disks. She's only been using a Mac for a week since we bought this thing and if she noticed something then there's something wrong.

... it is affecting most people out there.

I don't know about that. There's another topic on here with people not having any problems at all, plus of course (as others have said) people not having problems won't post about it. It's only when someone has a problem that they post about it ... or even worse whinge and whine about it as though Apple personally has it in for them.

Billy have you tried removing the Flash Plugin from Safari, then going to a page with flash and letting it reinstall.

Others have mentioned reinstalling Snow Leopard have sped up their machines. I'm going to try some of these fixes over the weekend to see if it fixes the problem.

It could quite possibly be a memory leak in the 4670 video driver

I don't know. I don't want to open my box up because this could be a hardware issue. I don't want to be stuck with a machine that is not worth what I paid for out the box. Apple, inc need to respond or else I'm taking this machine back.

I just peeped the no problems thread. I pose the same question here, for those of you having problems, tell us where you got the machine from. If from an Apple retail store, can you tell us which one?

Probably a combination of drivers and Snow leopard. The issue is what I understand memory leakage. Don't see why it would be hardware related.

Hi

I am having problems with my new 27inch iMac to. After leaving it on for about 10hrs it starts slowing down so much I am unable to use it! Restarting seems to fix it and then it is ok for another 10 or so hours. I am thinking of trying to get a refund but im not dont know if they will refund me or just offer me a replacement? I would like a refund because I think this will only happen again to the new one. Have any of you guys had any experience with returning goods to a apple store in the UK ?

For the first 14 days, money back refund no questions asked. Your return by date will be on the invoice/receipt.

I've tried to disable all plugins in the browser, but a few hours later... the issue reappears.

And its not about lagging flash video... that is just a symtom. Everything lags and you could feel laggy dashboard and expose.
