I installed XPSP3 before the Bootcamp update, and there were no problems...

It's probably just a precaution. Maybe on some systems there are driver issues, but you don't have that hardware.

How do you find SP3?

Probably yes I was just lucky with it, though I haven't fully explored it since I did the install.

I found the service pack installer on Microsoft's website by just doing a search for 'sp3'. It seems now, however, that they have removed the link because clicking the correct search result yields "page could not be found".

I believe the official release is next week, so you should hopefully be able to get a copy then...

would this update any sound drivers? It took me a few hours to get the sound working under XP when I installed a few months ago, I don't want it to stop working now.

I run Vista x64 (on a Dell) so i'm not really pushed about SP3. Although i'll probably update all my virtual machines to SP3 (sometimes you need to use 32bit drivers :D )

The bootcamp update still does not fix the problem running in boot camp with an external display on a MBP in clamshell mode. And even in dual display mode I still can't make my ACD the main display.

Makes bootcamp mostly useless to me.

I haven't had a chance to install this yet but I hope it fixes the problem with Vista not booting via DVI-D.

Initial reports at the Apple forums reveal no tangible changes or bug fixes to the trackpad-related problems introduced in version 2.0... Once again, I'm sticking to Boot Camp 1.4.

Sorry i had to modify your post there. :)

Isn't the nVidia/ATI addition sort of redundant considering that they are the only two manufacturers of video cards for the Mac? :) In any case, do you know if it resolves the problem?

Okay so here is my understanding, correct me if Im wrong.

You can install Nvidia windows driver on MBP and you wont have problems with compatibility am I correct? Even though Apple uses EFI while PC use PCI-E?.

Parallels and Fusion can run Windows from BootCamp on Mac OS X right? Meaning that you dont need to have 2 different version of XP in your PC (one for boot camp, one for virtualization).

So did I get this correct?

That is how many do it (including me).

Did you try to right click on desktop and go into:

There are no such options.

Now do you mean right-click to select Properties which opens the Display Properties Control Panel? That doesn't help. The Settings tab won't let me set the ACD as the main display (the option is disabled). And if I can even get it to boot into clamshell mode at all, the display is set at 1680x1050 as a max resolution in Display properties. It won't allow setting 1920x1200.

Like I said, it's still broken.

It was even worse for me: my external monitor was limited to 1024x768! Needless to say, no clamshell mode.

I fixed it with updated nVidia drivers from laptopvideo2go.com. They just posted a number of new drivers earlier this week.

A couple of notes:
This is on last year's 15" MBP
It's not an ACD, it's 24" HP monitor. (Not as pretty a package, but I love the picture)

But a speedy driver update and I'm up to 1920x1200, clamshell mode, wake with Bluetooth, the whole thing.

The other thing to note: I haven't run the BC update. If there's no improved trackpad support, I think I can wait....

Sorry for the dumb question, but do you need to install this update if you already have bootcamp and windows xp all installed or if you are going to create a new bootcamp windows installation?
My current win xp with bootcamp that came with leopard works just fine. why would it need updating?
I would hate to screw up the win xp installation and have to repeat that process again.

It was needed to take the aim of the problem away from being a Vista issue and placing it on the cause of the problem.

The problem is caused by drivers for the graphics card.

Just outside Boston, MA.
I installed this update, and as someone here already said, the graphics were all fuzzy, until that is I installed the latest GMAX3100 drivers from Intel. All is well otherwise, except for the fact that the time settings still don't sync up. Each time I back-boot to OS X, the clock is either 4 hours behind or 4 hours ahead.

Why Apple oh why haven't you fixed that yet!?

BTW, I won't post a link, but some torrent sites already have the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) version of SP3. Search up on a torrent site and you're bound to find it. I'll wait for it to show up on MS' site, or when it's available from Windows Update.

Well,

I have seen so many complaints about this Bootcamp update that I just wanted to share my positive story. Thanks to some posts I figured out that this update applied to Windows (.exe extension) and that it is available through Software Update application on the Windows side, not the Software Update on the Mac OSX side.

So, this is what I did:

Reboot the MacBook into Windows.
Run Apple Software Update. It showed the Bootcamp update. Click to install.
A few minutes later I came back to see, and there was a dialog saying that I needed to restart to finish the installation. Clicked to restart.
Windows came back up with no problems, what used to work seems to still be working, video resolution is fine and everything seems to work fine. I didn't have any issues before, and I don't have any issues after the update as far as I can say. This is a regular Black MacBook core 2 duo 2GHz

My 2 cents

I've had some similar problems with my external monitor, and I haven't applied the Boot Camp update yet. My monitor will default to 1920x1080 instead of the 1920x1200 native resolution. I've gone to the nVidia control panel settings and created a custom resolution and had it work sometimes. Other times I unplug the monitor from my MBP and then plug it back in. Upon reenabling the "extend desktop to this monitor" I'm able to select 1920x1200. The latter seems to be more consistent in fixing the resolution problem.

This only started happening to me after I tried out a laptop2go driver set. I backed out of the driver, but the problem kept happening. It seems to be easier to fix with the newer laptop2go driver in place than without, though. With the newer driver in place I can also make my external monitor the default properly, and that never worked with the Apple supplied drivers.

My experience was very similar. I rebooted into Windows XP Professional, ran Apple Software Update, saw the update, downloaded it, let it install, rebooted, and had absolutely no problems. This was on an Intel Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66 GHz machine. Windows XP SP2 was installed and fully patched/up-to-date and running under an admin level account. After rebooting and logging in without any problems, I installed SP3's final build (5512) and had no new problems at all with it as well.
