Updated to SP3 RC2 about 2 weeks ago - XP has run fine with Bootcamp 2.0 and Fusion 1.1.2... What again does this bootcamp 2.1 update accomplish?

It was even worse for me: my external monitor was limited to 1024x768! Needless to say, no clamshell mode.

I fixed it with updated nVidia drivers from laptopvideo2go.com. They just posted a number of new drivers earlier this week....
I have the ATI Radeon X1600 graphics. I tried the Bootcamp drivers from the ATI site. Neither those nor Apple's Bootcamp video drivers help.

Using an external monitor is just plain broken.

Okay so here is my understanding, correct me if Im wrong.

You can install Nvidia windows driver on MBP and you wont have problems with compatibility am I correct? Even though Apple uses EFI while PC use PCI-E?.

You are wrong on one part. The ability to run Nvidia windows drivers is not indicitive on whether a computer has EFI. EFI is basically a replacement to the BIOS (basic input output system). PCI-E (PCI-Express) is an expansion slot standard, kind of like PCI and AGP slots. The two aren't related.

Nvidia does not provide drivers for laptops. It is up to OEM manufactures (like Apple, Dell, HP, ect) to provide their own drivers to the users. Of course, these drivers are generally provided to these OEM companies from Nvidia, although maybe with some slight modifications. Places like laptopvideo2go provides laptop and desktop drivers and a modified file that allows these drivers to be installed on any laptop, regardless of manufacturer.

I went to Apple's site to download Boot Camp 2.1 and install it. It's basically installs/updates existing drivers. So, I would assume that if you wanted to install Vista 64-bit, all you would need to do is download these drivers from Apple, put them on a flash stick. Install Vista-64bit and then install the drivers.

Sorry I know I'm being a bit thick here but does that mean that you can put 64 bit vista on any Core 2 Duo, or is it updating the drivers for the machines that already could use 64 bit?
Thanks for answering.

Go to the Micro$oft downloads page, and search for Windows XP Service Pack Three.
Here's the link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...AD-BC34-40BE-8D85-6BB4F56F5110&displaylang=en

I know where to find it. I was asking how he found using it, I.E. his experience :D

All core 2 duo's can run 64-bit windows. They just lacked drivers which made running 64-bit not as smooth as 32-bit. Now you get all the drivers so it will run as good :)

Cool thanks for answering, I'm not confused anymore.

Well it's an interesting update. As far as my experience, it has made Vista 32 less stable, introducing wake-from-sleep issues to match those in Leopard and introducing sound issues, especially with sounds not playing on application launches and such. Damn :(.

I have a question : do you recommend installing windows xp on a mac or vista? What one is more secure and more stable?

Windows XP if you are gaming. Windows Vista 64-bit if you are doing something else.

BTW, first generation Mac Pro here and I used the stand-alone update from the website. No problems. I am looking forward to SP3 now.

Installing X64 on a Merom/Santa Rosa MBP

Well I managed to use this update to install Vista X64 on my 2.4Ghz Merom/Santa Rosa MBP. I got everything working just fine. I had to use my early 2008 Mac Pro restore discs with the BootCamp64.exe installer initially, but the update cleaned up a lot of stuff.

I got the update to run on both my Mac Pro with Vista X64 and my MacBook Pro with Vista X64, so add me to the "working" list.

Here are the steps I went through to get it working, hope it helps someone:

Where can you get the 64bit drivers? I thought they only came on the install dvd for the MacPro.

still no updated drivers for the ATI x1600 users... which apparently will never come even though they are terrible... there's no excuse for a macbook pro to have a grainy display (grey color gradients way off)... only the mbp lcd... using modded drivers as a last resort just to get external monitor usage working like it should have in the first place... clear as bell... while the lcd is still grainy all day

apple's dropping the ball a bit lately

Hello,

I do have similar problems but on an Intel GMA 950! An external minotor (22'' Samsung , 1680 x 1050) sometimes works, sometimes not and sometimes only at low resolutions. Clamshell mode sometimes with very strange results. Prpbably it even tried to display 1680x1050 on the internal(!) display (looks very strange).

Since a lot of users report similar problems on ATI and NVidia hardware I don't think this is a driver issue. Since clamshell mode is not common on standard windows machines, I think Windows itself is to stupid to do this.

I don't want to miss a big display so I only use windows in Prallels. It does everything I need.

But even if I don't run in clamshell mode I still can't set my external display to be the main display. If that would work I could at least just lower the laptop display and ignore it. The way my workspace is setup I can't use the laptop as the main display.

I also installed the ATI Catalyst Control software and it won't work (fails to launch).

I hate Windows. It's complete s*&t.

This update had all the Vista X64 drivers for my Merom/Santa Rosa MBP sans the wireless (which isn't hard to find). Granted I had to use the BootCamp64 installer off my Mac Pro's restore discs to get everything to work correctly.

I wonder why Apple is being so dodgy about allowing folks to run X64 on machines that are capable of it?

apple's dropping the ball a bit lately

I had the same distorted graphics problem under XP on my 2.33 gHZ MBP. I recently applied the "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5" and got a substantial improvement - but still not perfect yet.

A (little) more about this here:

What happens afterwards? Do you have an HP device (Printer, ect)?
