This article is full of fail. Why is the 13" such a hit then?

Don't shoot the messenger buddy, there's no need to get your panty's in bunch. Maybe the 13" is popular with old ladies I don't know and don't care.
You can believe what you want, but it's not hard to imagine people wanting to spend less in this economic climate.

Sorry, but all of these ads are getting boring. Apple is losing creativity and are just rehashing the same old virus commercials with new actors and slightly different eye candy. Need more creativity...

The point you forgot to mention is that everyone (even "Die hard Apple users and fanboys") used Windows on regular basis at some point in time. Therefore they know those are not misconceptions but facts.

Some point in time is not now, even for those who use it sometimes now... I still use it every day and I use the Mac. So you can't have you exclusivity of having those points I mentioned facts. You can call them facts, and I'll call them misconceptions, and we'll be on our merry way :)

New eye candy? nahh! I totally disagree. These ads are still good.

They've won numerous awards. Effie, One Show, US News' Best Video Ad, Garfield Bobby awards, etc.

Apple is selling Macs in record numbers.

Apple is virtually recession-proof. Most of their revenue coming from Mac sales.

Macs, Macbooks especially, are among the most coveted and desirable tech products today.

Apple rules the $1000+ notebook market.

If their ads aren't working, they sure as hell aren't hurting them.

Wait, let me get this straight: Apple is doing well, so the reason must be these stupid ads? What makes you think it just isn't that people actually like the computers? Maybe you failed to notice, but 2006 is also the year that Apple started introducing Intel processors into their computers, making it easier for cross-platform software design, and allowing windows to be run on a mac. I bought my first mac in 2007, and it wasn't because of some silly ad campaign. I have yet to talk to any mac user who bought a mac because they saw one of those ads. Apple's best form of advertising is word-of-mouth, because most mac owners are satisfied with the end-user experience, so they tell that to people. And honestly, how convincing is some shill spouting generalities about why his product is better than the other guy's? Sure, Apple fanboys still get a kick out of these ads. That doesn't mean that they actually push products.

No matter how well Apple is doing, it doesn't change the fact that this ad campaign is well past its prime. Coming from a company that prides itself on being original, these ads are really ironic.

OMGosh!! My brother-in-law!!!

Patrick is my brother-in-law - married to my baby sister, Cathy. This is so way cool! Tomorrow I'm going to call her and give her a hard time because she knows what Mac zealot I am (apparently he's a Mac guy now, too - PCs downstairs for the kids), and she didn't call me to let me know. !!!!!!!

I hope I get him on the line, 'cause I'll give him a worse time.

Or a Live CD Linux or Linux on a virtual machine.

It's always so obvious when the tinkerers show up. What I don't understand is why you think you know anything about anyone else.

"Average" users wouldn't understand half of your sentences in this thread, pal.

And I haven't yet met a person who wants to repeatedly build their own Linux boxes (but never actually DO anything, other than games) who was interested in Mac. So now you know what you like, go build another box. Why do you think everyone is a tinkerer? You are part of a smaller marketshare than Mac users. Geez....

It was stupid!
I won a Macbook pro and love it, but still can not fully rely on it.
For example, in windows, I can create high quality figures by copy and paste from Matlab figures, but the quality is very poor when I do same thing in Mac.
I have Matlab and Office for Mac and Windows.

 No need to get defensive, "buddy", I was speaking towards TH's article quality. Having a new Apple laptop was never really a necessity. The low end market was always there. But like I said they neglected to mention the success of the 13" MBP as well as the back to school promo's perpetual popularity. The economy might suck but 1k is a drop in the bucket when college tuition averages out at about 70k (tution + living expenses + books etc etc) (give or take). Typing a paper on a netbook would be like writing a thesis on an iPhone. just weird.

True. I use both. Ironically though, you're using a 13 mbpro due partially to msft. Or or least apples price points.

Apple all but ditched the pro user. If you need anything near high end, even a MacBook pro, you need the express slot for raid or processing express cards ala AUD, only on 17" while the rest have been slashes in price pretty big. This is why I'm glad I got one of the last with express slot. In some ways, msft is working as apple reduced prices and like I said if you need just one pro funtion, you will have to pay big time. In a way, I'm glad. The prosumer market for audio, video and gamerz exceeds the music biz and apple has yet to address that. Mid range headless. Or mbp with express slot and fast gpu and I think windows 7 will make that happen.

We will see more prosumer products. And cheaper. I remember when a mac could hold it's vaule. Now I saw a 2.4 bid on eBay tonight End under $700, so there is some things going on that right now looks like Apple (US economy), is doing well (china example making everything gave illusion economy was well), only to find out, I hope not, that apple goes flat. Especially if the don't address the mid range or put back all the pro features like they did with FireWire. Told everyone it had nothing to do with form factor but everything to do with money. Forcing hand of small high end yet PEOPLE responsible for putting up with all of Apples silly G4/5 benchmarks that were much slower.

Typing on iPhone. Hope this make sense.

Peace

I am all mac, (tons of ipods, an imac, and a new 13" MBP on the way), but i will occasionaly jump over to windows to play a game or two, but thats all i use windows for. No matter how much these adds degrade and make fun of windows it still has the largest library of games. The adds are amusing everytime i watch them, even the old ones.

On a side note i have a 12 year old pc that still works, its seams that the quality of pcs have degraded over time. All the more reason to use macs.

I never got the whole Mac vs Windows thing both have their positives and negatives.

Also I've never gotten a virus on Windows, in the end its the end-user whose to blame regardless of how easier it is or isn't to get one.

Lame and boring; no real substance here. We know this already folks!
Apple - time for a change in the ads. Yeah, they're getting old.
This one wasn't so cool. More rehash of the same stuff...

I dunno. Meh.

Bootcamp was supposed to be good, because now we can run Windows! Yay! But Windows is horrible! Boo!

What would they say about a Thinkpad running Linux? :D

I love macs. I love pcs. I can repair both and build a hackntosh. I can edit kext and plist files so I can use just about any graphic card I want. That said, several years ago I got to go into what the apple retail stores call BOH or back of house. There they had tiger on their machines for almost 9 months before upgrading. Inthen took a screenshot of one of their macs that employees use to log in and listen to the required daily D. On these machine they have and still have, anti virus software, it is what it is.

Since when do Macs have no viruses? They keep implying this in their ads and it's very deceptive. Obviously Macs have viruses and can have problems like any other computer. Also, maybe Macs have less viruses because they have less developers and software overall.

I agree completely with the posters that said these ads are tired and that they should advertise their own positives, like the iPhone ads do.

Has anyone ever met a PC user that switched to a Mac and didn't like it? I haven't. All of these PC users that dog on Macs probably haven't even tried a Mac. They just put up with the crappy user experience that PCs offer and assume that all computers are the same. Apple should run a campaign with interviews with former PC users. The whole pissing match gets a bit annoying, really. I'm a lifelong Mac user and, yes, a fanboy. But, it's crazy to me how many PC users dog on Macs without even trying them. I've used both and have stuck with the one that I prefer most. At least try both before you defend Windows so much, people!

I have used PC's for years and years until few months ago. It was a very hard decision wether to buy another PC or Mac since my laptop was starting to fail. So i got iMac and first week or so was quite aquard, so just trying it wount help, you really need to own one to appreciate it. Now i love my iMac, but i still will need a cheap PC laptop to run some OBD II programs. But hands down Mac much better experience, and no more stress from just using a computer.

I gotta say, if that's all they have to respond : Weak. There's so much that is better in OS X vs Windows and with Mac hardware vs PC Hardware, you'd think they could come up with something that isn't "viruses and malware".

Here's the thing, that's exactly the WRONG way to advertise Apple's computer products. They're not selling to the more geeky set who care about hardware and pointing out what's better in OS X just makes people think of the work they'll need to do retraining themselves to use a different OS. And they certainly can't push cost as a positive (even though in some cases they're very price competitive like for like) as there's no way to quickly sell the idea without coming off as ultra-defensive.

The current Apple advertising walks a very fine line but it's basically just a way of getting people to the store (or web site) with a good, solid reason in their heads about why they might want to switch away from Windows to something else. Once there the products pretty much speak for themselves and pretty much every Genius I've ever met is very good at carrying that message on.

Again we've got to remember that people like us that read forums and actually know the ins and outs of each hardware spec, we'll come to Apple in our own time (or not), advertising doesn't really work on us. Apple is going after the masses and it's a tactic that seems to be working. God, can you imagine how boring an ad would be targeted at the geek? 'This is why the hardware's actually reasonably priced', 'OS X, running x% faster than windows in the three top benchmark prograzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz'.

A driver a third party company makes, end user goes to install the driver but they installed the incorrect one. However, with Windows 7... pretty much all of that work is done for you unless you're using some old device that almost no one uses. All of my devices worked out of the box without shuffling around to find drivers.

Again. Pro mac here. But win 7 is fast and required little effort for any drivers. In amfact one high end audio device took a year before the driver showed up before it worked in vista. In win 7, right out of the box. Why is that??? And why did mac do so well, well thy make their own hardware. Thing is, remeber the switch to mobile me, the so called exchange for everyone else? That didn't last long. As soon as apple had to deal with 3rd party, it was a nightmare. The irony here though is that win 7 will be the main platform IT departments are going to upgrade and MSFT won't need to develop drivers for win xp, win 95, server 2000,03, and vista. Just one OS for the most part and ironically Apple is becoming affordable for eveyine, a MacBook pro no longer holds it's vaule the way they could for two, let alone 3-5 years, in fact, as stated earlier, a late 08 MacBook pro can be bought for less than 50% of the cost. This ties into my theory that if win 7 does well, apple neglets the Prosumer markets, we will get flooded with devices that won't hold their vaule and in a blink, apple could get into trouble. They already reduced prices. Now they need to address the largest segment, after iPhones, it's gaming, audio, video enthusiasts and the need towers, express slots, raid, what apple determines as Pro ONLY and not cost you $2700 (MBP 17 for express slot) and $3000 for a Mac Pro - it is here that the hackntosh makes sense and the developers, along with Pwnage and iPhone jail break (more than 50% of one Apple store employee's jail break their phone), can be made for less than $700 and does the job close to a Mac Pro.

Peace.

I own Apple products and I love (some) of them but these ads have got to go. Find some new material.. ANYTHING at this point.

They have devolved from informative mac features vs. lack of them on the PC to repeating generic "Thousands of viruses!"

We get it...idiots who don't know how to surf the web and too stupid to have a firewall + AVG or something get viruses.
