it happened to me a few times, the last time I saw it found that the device is unlocked but the backlite is not lightning up
before that, 1 time smart keyboard at the back problem no light, plus a few smart keyboard as cover make the ipad looks off - not sure if it is the backlite, i was in street and force shutdown/wake by home+power

this happened to me on my 10.5 this morning i thought the battery was dead but looking at the screen under a light i could see the apps just no back light. had to restart and now its working again. i am running the latest public beta.

Getting back mine. Yesterday did this issue 3 times and now by pressing the top of the screen under the camera, the screen squeezes and i can ear the squeak at every pressure and feels it has a defect as it moves and is disconnected. This part of the screen has less sensitivity to the touch screen and sometimes loses some touch of the fingers and Apple Pencil.
In 48hrs UPS will retire this device, 21 days ago I've paid 1000€ (~1200$) and I want a flawless device.

So, it happened again to me just now. While it was "dead', I stepped into sunlight and I can see all the icons. I can even launch apps. So it is literally just the backlight not turning on. The iPad itself runs normally except the backlighting is off.

Hmm..that is quite bizarre...

Same here.
iPP 12.9 Gen2, running latest iOS11 PB.

Happened twice now, after unplugging it in the morning.
Annoying.

It happened three times on my 10.5-inch iPad Pro purchased on launch day, both on 10.3.2 and 10.3.3. For twice it was when I opened the smart cover it didn't wake. Another time it was after screen time out. Waiting for a while or click the wake/sleep button several times or closing and opening the cover again would make it work again. It seems to me more likely a software bug, or the firmware of screen backlight etc. If the hardware itself is broken I wouldn't expect it to recover in such a short time and with a certain pattern. I also remember my iPhone 6s doing this several times back in iOS9 era.

Anyway, if this issue persists for next iOS release I would take it to Apple Store for a repair or exchange.

This has happened on mine for the last few weeks, worse since 10.3.3. I had called support, they did a remote diagnostic and saw no crashes or anything hardware related. They told me to reset all settings, a few days later it happened again. I brought it into the Apple Store, they did a deeper diagnosis and also didn't see anything wrong with hardware and did a full restore. It hasn't happened now in 2 days, I am personally hoping it is software.

One thing I will say which I don't know if it is related, it seems to happen when I charge from around half to full overnight. When I open it a few hours later, the issue happens, sometimes it takes 15 seconds or so to wake up, a couple times I did a power/home button reset. Has anyone replaced and found the replacement did not have the issue?

It has to be software. I find it happens most when I turn the screen off in landscape orientation, but then I try to wake up the screen when I am holding in portrait.

I'm also experiencing random times where the screen doesn't respond to touch. Starting to wonder...

My 12.9" would not wake up yesterday. Had to do a hard reboot. Interestingly it was after I overnight charged from about 35% to full. This is the second time a charging related glitch happened for me. The first time, I also charged overnight, but it was about 8-9 hours plunged into the charger rather than 4-5 hours.

Got my new iPad 10.5 today. Apple center in NL changed the old one with a brand new one yesterday.
I will update if this device has this issue too.

So far <Knock wood> it hasn't happened since the full restore. They offered me a brand new replacement if it happens again, I'm hoping the restore fixed it and that won't be necessary.

Augh, scratch that, happened again. Ebuccube, how did you make out with your replacement?

Doing great so far. 6 days and no problems.
With the apple care app I opened 2 tickets for general screen issue two times and the day after the apple care support called me back.
The third times they decided to understand the reason of this problem and 48hrs later UPS courier took the iPad. Next day at 9AM was under assistance, 2hrs later they decided to replace it and in the afternoon send me a new one with DHL. Next day at 1pm the new iPad was at home.
The assistance was unbelievable fast.
This is the full story and sorry for my bad English.

No need to apologize. I went to my Apple Store and explained the issue and requested an exception for an exchange after the 14 days. The guy was incredibly nice and did so. I'm hoping to enjoy the same experience as you. Curious, did you restore your backup to the new one, or started fresh and new?

Restore from iCloud back up and during the setup updated to iOS 10.3.3.

Same problem. Ipad pro10.5. So glad to see all posts about this. Hope it is a software issue and fixed soonest.

Just happened to me,, 5 day old 12.9 gen 2 on latest official software (not beta )

I use a ESR smart case, left it on bed with it closed, got back to my room after 30mim, opened the front of case and Ipad appeared dead, no light, no nothing.

Thought it was weird, had to use sleep wake and home button combo to switch it on.

Happened to me several times on 10.3.3 and the 11 beta. Since using stock wallpaper (mentioned either in this thread or elsewhere) for a couple of weeks, hasn’t happened once on my 10.5”. Weird.

I've been running stock wallpaper all along so I think that is purely coincidental.

This has been happening all along with my 2017 Pro 12.9". I close my Smart Cover/reopen and that wakes it. I have never had to do more than that to wake it, so not a very big deal for me. Cause this could end up being like the Air 2 Rotation Issue with still no official fix.

Yeah probably. Strange how it hasn’t happened once since doing it a few weeks ago though. Previously, it did it maybe three times a week.

Yup, mine seem to go through phases of it happening frequently to times when I don't recall when it last happened. Wish I could pinpoint the exact scenario.
