So, this backlight thing happened 4 times yesterday. Really starting to wonder if this might be a hardware issue that is getting worse.

Dang, I hope that is sorted out for you soon.

Everything appears to be okay here for the time being, but I will monitor.

Thanks! I've been using it a lot again today and no issues yet. There is no pattern to this it seems.

Add me to the club with my new 10.5 Pro. Happens about once or twice a week when I open my 3rd party cover. So far, every time I simply close and reopen the cover and the backlight comes on. I have reported this to the Apple bug site.

I experienced something similar to this with my 2nd gen 12.9 iPad Pro running the latest beta.. but this is what happened to me:

1. Flip Apple smart keyboard
2. See my image and notifications for a split second
3. Screen goes dark
4. Hit the power button, hear the "click" indicating it was put to sleep
5. Hit the power button again and the iPad came back on.

I'm not sure if I hit Touch ID in between seeing the display and the screen going dark.. I think I did, but it's hard to verify if it worked when the screen is dark.

Glad to hear. May it stay that way.

How many hours do you charge it? I noticed if it charges over 5 hours, I have the issues, but now I time the charge and disconnect as soon as it hits 100%.

I think length of charging definitely has something to do with it. I also did notice the backlight didn't activate yesterday when it happened, so the device is waking up, but the backlight is not. I am going to experiment with this on quick charging.

Guys this is weird
Pressing the home button black screen, as usual clicked the on off button and this time i've heard the camera click for a screenshot.
Pressed again on off and the iPad woke up normally.
This is the screenshot
It has to be a iOS bug not a hardware issue.

You have caught that screen mid transition when the device is unlocking. I got a few screenshots as well - as stated the device is awake, just the backlight hasn't come on.

But the transition lasted several seconds, because I clicked the on off button after 5 seconds. Usually the unlock lasts less than a second. Another weird thing is that I didn't clicked home and one off at the same time to do the screenshot but home and on off button 4/5 seconds after. IMO it's just iOS that has a bug in awakening.

Yes, something at that time has been taxing the system then it all happens at the same time I.e. The transition and both button presses hence the screenshot.

Had minor touch issues this morning in related to charging the iPad Pro.

I began charging my iPP, but then realized I wanted to fix a drawing I'd done earlier. Disconnected the charger and plugged in the Pencil and instantly had touch problems: Safari and the screen keyboard would not respond for a few seconds (I'd say under 10 seconds for both issues.)

I will monitor this, but I just wanted to mention as my issues all seem to stem from charging the iPad.

Last night I charged it for a couple hours until full. Today went to open it this afternoon, it would not power up. Had to close the cover and reopen it again and it powered on. If it's hardware, it may be something with the magnets? Someone mentioned earlier that the latest iOS 11 release seemed to had fixed it. Did it maintain the fix?

I don't use a smart case and still get the issue from time to time. Also, the smart cases wake the iPad and this issue is not the device unable to wake but just the backlight not coming on.

Having this issue sometimes with a brand new 10.5 Pro that was bought from Apple this week. Once a lock/unlock fixed it, once I pressed the home button and just waited about five seconds, then the display came on all by itself.

Like everyone else, hoping this is a software glitch and gets sorted in iOS 11... if it's a hardware fault, it must be pretty bad to get it on a 1-day old unit!

My ASK was acting up yesterday. Took about 4 tries before it connected properly. Certainly the least of the issues since I do not use the ASK all that much.

On the plus side, Glad to hear that iOS 11 is starting to help some with these issues. :)

Well, the frozen touch issue has been getting worse lately in mine. Waiting anxiously for iOS 11 to see if it helps.

The current iOS 11 beta fixed this issue for me. It was intermittent, but annoying.
Just had this happen for the first time yesterday... on the latest iOS 11 beta (been through the betas since beta 2). Tried to wake up my iPad by pressing the home and sleep button a lot of times and I heard a sound but otherwise nothing. Plugged it in then after a bit it worked. Hopefully this won’t be a reoccurring issue.

Similar problems with a new 10.5" here... . Sometimes the screen goes black but you can call Siri... very weird. After few seconds the screen comeback but other times remains this way until you plug in to the power (and not battery problem).

Very disappointed. I will go to the Apple Town square next week,
