I can give you endless list of good meaningful music and endless list of crap music for neanderthals, but that´s a whole different thread.

Yes, but do they have stomachs as flat as Brittney's ? Do they ?

Please tell me how the iPhone is more powerful than the iPad. iPad has faster processor, higher resolution screen, and can be had with more storage.

Please note, a damn camera does not make something better. I wish Apple would make an iPhone without one, I would be the first in line to purchase it.

Like I said, doing something "better" doesn´t cut it.

According to your own personal criteria, I guess...

For most of us, it does just fine. Aside from your trolling, you and others I've seen seem to think the iPad/iPhone is an either/or usage case. For a lot of people, each one fits into a different usage and there is no concern about which one they should spend their money on. While I "can" browse the web on my couch using the iPhone, it pales in comparison to using the iPad. I have yet to meet someone who doesn't agree after they've personally used both in a real life situation (as opposed to just trying one out in a store).

Hey, after 7 pages of war caused by insecure iPad owners we have finally a suggestion how to actually make the iPad better with a feature that the iPhone doesn´t have.

I guess there´s still hope for this thread! :)

But if they put that feature on the iPad, you know it will make it's way to iPhone / iPod touch also right? Then it wouldn't be an iPad only feature and you would just start this post over again...

Exactly. And if for some reason it didn't, someone in the iPhone forum would start a thread complaining why the iPhone doesn't have the X feature that is in the iPad.

It's called technological advancement. If Apple sticks with the current update schedule, then the iPad will always be released in April/May with some amazing new features not in the then current iPhones/iPod touches, but come June/July the new iPhone will arrive with amazing new features not in the then current iPad. iPhone 5 will be "better" than iPad 2, iPhone 6 will be "better" than iPad 3, and so on.

ok long time lurker on macrumors, I had to join to reply to this thread

The OP might be a troll or maybe not, why be so aggressive maybe he's not using the right words. such as telling people they have wasted their money, what people enjoy spending their money on is up to them and an ipad might be perfect for alot of peoples usage scenarios.

BUT the ipad is hardly a perfect device from a technology to price ratio and yes there does need to be differentiation from the ipod touch and iphone lines. it is a bad comparison with the iphone as this is a device on a whole different scale. The correct like for like comparison is with the new ipod touch and hardware wise they are identical except for a slightly higher clocked processor (but identical in graphics power), a bigger battery and a bigger screen. and the price for these upgrades $300. 32gb ipod touch $300 to 32gb wifi ipad $600.

Some people here may find that acceptable but it really is not for me and alot of the other people wanting to buy an ipad who probably will when the update arrives. Don't use the it sells really well and it's good enough for me as reasons it shouldn't have differentiating features, from a technological stand point that makes no sense we should be asking apple to push some boundaries not maximize profits all the time. This kind of attitude breeds the kind of slow incremental drip feeding of technology for obscene profits that I don't think a company with the market influence of apple should always employ. Thankfully android devices exists to push apple to improve all the new tablets with tegra 2 etc. Demand more but enjoy what you have and then the next device can be even better. Would you want apple to sell the same device for years to come?

The benefits from a more powerful device would be huge the better browsing experience on the large screen would be even greater if it could render web pages with the speed of a desktop just loading engadget for example mere seconds on my laptop quite a lot longer on any iOS device! I know this speed isnt available yet from ARM chips but apple should provide the best on the market don't give them reason to slow down development. fortunately apple have been ahead of the game, bringing cortex A8 to the market first for example I just hope the next ipad has a dualcore A9 so I can justify a purchase I need it to be more powerful than my iphone 4 if its going to replace it in most of my usage scenarios because I can deal with a smaller screen atm, screen real estate is not enough justification for me and a lot of others even if it is for the millions who buy it. I just want some more incentive. it seems like the OP is trying to make that point but it has been misconstrued along the way. which is unsurprising considering all the trollish posts that people have had to deal with on this forum from maxipads to large ipod touches.

Now to answer the OP what the ipad should have to differentiate from the iphone and ipod touch is a superior processor and graphics chip and more ram as you would expect going from a netbook to a laptop it is a very reasonable request. just because an ipad provides a good experience with ipod touch specs doesn't mean it should be just that. it wan't feasible this year as A9 processors were not available but next year definitely.

ipad 2:
apples analogue to the samsung orion chip (dualcore with better graphics)
1gb ram
front facing camera
usual yearly doubling of memory so 32gb, 64gb, 128gb

these are reasonable upgrades considering the current ipad is really a suped up iphone 3gs or ipod touch 3rd gen. this will be nearly 2 year old technology by update time.

please ipad owners just because youre happy with your purchase do not get angry when people don't agree it's perfect. it's a very nice device with first gen flaws I should know I went through the iphone 1 beta test. it is a common fact that it does not have enough ram look at the safari tabs problem. this is called planned obsolescence don't be naive as early apple adopters you have taken the beta test and will allow future owners to be able to buy an ipad 2 or 3 along with you when you upgrade. don't let apple just give us bigger ipod touches for double the price, demand a little more after all more power would provide a better app experience and as it pushes more pixels it needs more power to equal the smaller devices anyway.

end
that was long and might make no sense but this thread frustrated me lol :)

Urgh, that was very hard to read, how about breaking up the longer paragraphs into smaller chunks, please?

it seems like the OP is trying to make that point but it has been misconstrued along the way.

I do agree with you that OP may have been miscontrued, but he only has himself to blame. He keeps on insisting that just because he finds the iPad useless / not worth the money, that is true for everyone. It's not. It's just common sense that most people on an iPad forum are here because they find the iPad useful / worth the money, and not only did the OP come in declaring the opposite but he kept badgering the point. You cannot expect people to engage in a rational, civilized discussion if you don't treat them and their opinions with respect.

..... You cannot expect people to engage in a rational, civilized discussion if you don't treat them and their opinions with respect.

I will have a look at editing it.

I agree the OP should not be telling people what to spend their money on etc. It annoys me as the thread topic is valid looking to the future as the ipad is likely to fork from the ipod/iphone iOS variant to greater extents as it develops as a product.

Okay, Safari. I have three windows open now, no refresh. I can do five, I have had six, but most were not graphics heavy. Atomic web browser does even better, but since you don't own an iPad all you can do is go by what people say on this forum, and MOST of the bashers don't own them either.

iPod touch reference. iPad has a faster processor than the touches and iPhones. It also has a HIGHER resolution IPS display (touch doesn't use IPS). The iPad and touches/ phones are similar so they can run most of the same applications. They are designed to compliment each other. This also makes it easier for the app developers to reach more people. Do you really want them to totally rewrite Angry Birds so it can be ported to the touch/iPhone ?

Ram. Yep, more is better, to a certain extent. But the iPad also runs faster than the iPhone 4.

Camera. You have an iPhone. Use that for facetime. Every electronic device manufactured does not need a camera. Some of us also do jobs at facilities that prohibit cameras. So now I am stuck using crappy laptops. (Apple does not make a laptop without an integrated iSight camera). Please don't take away my option to upgrade my iPad by including a camera that people will hardly ever use.

Storage. Most normal people (based on claims I have read on MR) don't use half the storage that they have now. Why would they double storage and drop the 16 gig (which is a good seller)?

My opinion is that the iPad evolution needs to start in software. Recent Numbers update should mean I'll be breaking out the laptop even less. I'll download the update and try it out when I get home tomorrow and see.

Apple will develope and evolve the iPad no matter what the compition does. Or even if there is still a lack of it. (Is the Archos really a competing product? It's been out for a while, anyone have sales figures?)

Welcome to MacRumors sarky

You are wrong

I disagree completely with you and your post.
The Ipad is not just a stripped down iphone.
It maybe not a product that you think is worthy but more than 3 million people think it is.
Now I see you use your phone for email and games and directions, and of course, calling, and reading if you want.
But the screen is rather small to read on, I don't care how good the image is if I have to scroll up and down every thirty seconds. I don't like to use the web on my iphone, again this has to do with screen size, it is annoying to have to resize everything and turn it to sides to get the view of the website. and reading on a website...not fun. I am not saying that I do not use the web, but I prefer a bigger screen.
I write alot, and I do not like to type on my iphone, messages of any length over a sentence. Again the screen size.
On my ipad I write comfortably and read comfortably, I can view websites, without having to turn the thing sideways so I can read the .04 font. Because the ipad is so nice to read with I have started rereading the classics. I just finished reading A tale of Two Cities, and the Grapes of Wrath. I am starting the Fountainhead tomorrow night. I would not have endeavored to read any of that on the iphone, because the screen is too small.
I can play music on my ipad, I can manipulate pictures on my ipad, the only thing i can not do on my ipad is play WOW ( Steve, are you listening? ).
I use my ipad everyday, so it is not a waste of money.
Also the only thing my ipad is missing that I like on the iphone is the camera. Facetime is great for the two times that I have legitimately wanted to use it, other than to test it out for fun.
All of the above being said, I love my iphone 4. But the thing I use most at home is my ipad. The only time I turn on my macbookpro or my imac, is to play WOW.
Personally I do not think they are going to add much to the ipad 2. Better memory, faster processor, a little better screen, and a camera. these are not huge upgrades, but this is what I expect. If you OP are looking for some magical intangible to make you want to buy an ipad. I think you will be waiting for a long time. The ipad is great. I use mine everyday. I didn't waste my money. Perhaps if you wanted to start a constructive thread ( I doubt this, everything you have typed since the original post has been very troll like )
You could have asked what do you think will be the features of the ipad 2?
And I would have commented that you shouldn't have bothered, as their are a million threads a day with this question.

I don't know if anything that could be added to the iPad could make me justify its cost. I see potential and situations where I could use it instead of my iPhone, but I think I'd rather just suffer with a smaller screen and a laptop. I don't think it needs any feature to differentiate it from an iPhone, I mean, it clearly has plenty of usability for plenty of people already, including myself.

Damn, I wish I knew someone who had one, I'd be over their house every night :D

This is exactly what happened with me and the original iPhone. "I really want one, but i can't justify $600". Then they lowered the base price to $200 and I got one lol

...besides the bigger screen of course, but that´s not enough for the money. It needs to have something special, something that the iPhone doesn´t have. Preferably hardware related.

Now it just lacks lots of the features and specs that the iPhone does have. Plus iPhone has one major advantage, portability. So the iPad is basically waste of money, not even the "luxury item" that some people calls it.

Hopefully the next one will be better. So what could be that special feature, ideas?

Time to change from bobhail to bobfail. So insightful.

the safari problem usually comes from what I can tell when you start to open more apps and with multitasking more RAM will always be better it is really a negligible cost and 1gb would just provide a better experience no doubt. I can sometimes run 20 or more tabs when I'm researching and want/need multiple pages open at a time. although it might not be general use it is not fun to wait for pages to reload. I see the safari problem on my iphone 4 with double the ram and it was awful on the iphone 3g. no need to own an ipad! STOP justifying LESS, Im not saying apple should charge more but the next version NEEDS more its a newer version it should get performance upgrades which should be better than preceding touches/iphones they just should for the sake of technological advancement.

I know the screen is IPS and higher res, but it needs to be when it is bigger thats another reason it needs a better processor and battery. extra pixels and size don't come for free. well no, touches and iphones should be the same, the ipad version of angry birds has an upgraded resolution I'm not saying the platforms should be different. If they all use ARM variations no recoding should be needed except to take advantage of extra grunt and res this is done for the current ipad anyway so I don't know what you are insinuating. Im just saying the ipad should have a better processor variant not just a slightly higher clock.

Oh yeah and still none of those upgrades account for DOUBLE price, look at the apple TV same hardware minus the screen, batteries and (until a teardown confirms it) the storage and thats $99! We know apple will make a nice profit on that so do those things really add in $400 to get to the ipad price noooooo. The ipad won't get cheaper as the market has spoken and found it a reasonable price but it does rather entitle us to some higher specs dont you think?

On the camera I agree I could not care less about facetime but so many people complain about the ipads lack of it. it's on apples roadmap for ipad anyway but a rear facing camera is a little silly and unnecessary.

your point on storage makes no sense, 32gb FOR THE SAME PRICE AS YOU CURRENTLY GET 16gb is what should happen. the 16gb chips are getting cheaper for apple so why not give more. If you can get more for the same price why wouldn't you? the reason the 16gb sells more is because it's cheapest not because 16gb is the best amount of storage. if I want music and large games which are inevitable as the power increases and higher res textures and assets are used more space will be a necessity what is suitable now is not always what will be suitable in another year or two.

Yes there should be evolution in software, but you must take into account how hardware evolution provides the means for greater software. I see the same problems in game console arguments when people say the Wii hardware is fine and that being more powerful is pointless. More power in video games allows for better AI and physics etc its not all about graphics. It is hard to look at apple to always lead with software updates considering the news that only one guy was on the remote app and he was moved off that so no more updates, who knows how large their iOS iwork team is, at least you got an update. The lack of a modern notification system in iOS4 is a sign of how slow or stubborn apple can be although I assume it stems from the lack of multitasking in the earlier OS so we might get it in iOS5

Obviously apple will evolve its products but you are naive if you don't believe competition provides the greatest incentive! look at the comments SJ makes about google and microsoft. He wants to provide something better than them, if they aren't there adding their new features what is apple going to look to be better than. The whole foundation of the iphone was improving on the phones that were out there, if nothing was there for apple to be better than would they have invented the phone I'm not sure.

Also thanks for the welcome :), I love reading the site, and some healthy debate is always good. It is a shame that sometimes it all falls into name calling and trollishness.

Absolutely agree. But there is one thing the iPad does that iPhone doesn't: it causes jealous iPadless haters to start threads like this on on Macrumors.com.

First he asks for "something special, something that the iPhone doesn´t have. Preferably hardware related," and then after many of us say the bigger screen is the killer feature, he turns around and says "Doing something "better" doesn´t cut it..." I don't understand what OP wants to hear in response.

If you tested it out in a store, that's not enough to know whether iPad is worth it or not. It's better to actually bring it home, download Apps for it, and play. Apps that are specially made for iPad's large screen are things that iPhone 4 don't have. Oh, but OP wants a hardware feature, not software. NVM

I totally understand the feeling of OP, I used to hate on iPad and think iPad owners were smug d0uchepads, until I finally caved and got 2 for me and my hubby. OP, just do yourself a favor and get one already... or if it's not worth it to you, why bother trying to spread your opinion to iPad owners/non-owners?

Im not saying apple should charge more but the next version NEEDS more its a newer version it should get performance upgrades which should be better than preceding touches/iphones they just should for the sake of technological advancement.

Of course the NEXT VERSION would have more, and be better than the currrent version, probably at around the same price point. I'm not sure why you think anybody has said anything different.

As for pricing of the current version, you can't really blame Apple for charging what the market would bear. They are a business, they are in it for making money. BTW, 32GB touch = $300, 32GB WiFi-only iPad = $600, so that's double the price, but 64GB touch = $400, while 64GB WiFi-only iPad = $700, instead of $800. Why the difference? Just marketing shennigans. I'd go crazy if I bothered to rant and rave at all such seemingly illogical pricing in Apple's lineup.

But gimmicky pricing aside, I do consider the iPad worth twice the price of an iPod touch. Until the iPad came out, the touch was my PDA and ebook reader. Now, it's been downgraded to just being my mp3 player. I don't even watch videos on my touch anymore. The iPad is now my PDA, ebook reader, video player, and portable word processor and internet devices. It performs at least four or five functions as opposed to just one for the touch. When I think about it like this, double the price of a touch seems like a bargain.

The next iPhone needs to have something special that the iPad doesn't have besides the few pissant features some people have a hard-on for. It needs to have something special, something that the iPad doesn´t have. Preferably cognitively related.

For now, it just lacks lots of the wow factor and attractivity that the iPad has. Plus the iPad has one major advantage, it doesn't have a following of idiots that need to validate their existence by posting inflammatory rhetoric anonymously on a forum. So the iPhone is basically waste of money, not even the "luxury item" that some people call [no "s" at the end] it.

Hopefully the next one will be better. So what could be that special feature, ideas? Maybe the next iPhone activates the part of someones brain that allows them to see things from other peoples perspective and then they'd realise that just because they do not see the advantage of a product in their lives, does not mean that said product is universally "useless". Perhaps it will also augment users grammar knowledge and allow them to author somewhat correct and coherent posts?

It's just me expressing some frustration at the way people say certain aspects are fine almost saying they dont need to be better. The OP asked what should be different and things such as ram and proc should be but can't be till the next version. I'm just hoping they get increased to the level I want so I can line up on day one. Which is why I want the A9 and increased ram, which will be the norm once the flood of tablets hit. I expect apple will bring them, it's just a worry I have from being a little duped on my iphone 1 to 3g upgrade after 8 months. 2.5 years of apple making my phone slower while adding more functions was not cool. I don't want that with my ipad.

The pricing is expected it's sustainable I think they have leeway to $400 low end but I don't think they need it especially with their competitors pricing (samsung fail on multiple levels). I just want a bit more bang for buck.

I think its a beautiful device and can't wait to jump in hopefully for gen 2! I've already started buying ipad apps. Apple are really good at making us pay because we like the way they do things. So the likelihood is apple will keep the ipad as lead hardware in the year with iphone taking the new hardware in the summer with a BIG new thing and ipods in the autumn. Differentiation will be software and screen size with potentially higher clock speed or more cores as there is more room for heat dissipation and batteries.

one thing that hasn't been mentioned but looks likely is bluetooth 3.0 implementation will that start with the next ipad or iphone? considering it is hitting new devices in the year end.

also will or should apple move new iOS updates back to march with the new ipads rather than the iphone? or will the new ipads always be in iOS limbo. I expect apple is catching up with 4.2 and ipads should get new updates day and date with phones and touches from now on hopefully. but then what will ipad 2 come with 4.2 or some inbetweeny 4.3 (probably to add the inevitable facetime)

Your post is a nightmare to read and I quickly gave up after the first sentences. I'm sure you had valid points, but please punctuate. Using proper grammar is not a crime, not using it is.

I tried to improve it, I just end up typing too fast to worry about readablilty. Then end up writing too much to bother proof reading .

I sold my iPhone to buy an iPad and I have not looked back.

For me the iPad is everything the iPhone is but on a much larger screen, and that what makes it better. Its all about the screen.

I can sit on my couch, surf the web, control my media center and check emails all on the one small device.

Laptops/Netbook are to bulky and get to hot to have sitting on or next to you.

An internal camera will be included in the next iPad, which would be useful, no need for an external one.

I have been using 4.2 on it for a while now and it multitasks without issue on the 128MB of memory, so thats fine.

The only other thing I want on it would be a higher resolution screen.

Would it be at all possible to direct this thread back to the discussion intended by the OP? I've really had enough of the 12-16 year olds overpowering this forum with childish argumentation. I've always been a supporter of the "if you don't like it, leave" ideal, but every now and then it would be nice to read about a topic without having to sort through all of the territorial and ego-boosting bull.

/rant, back on topic.

I think that a retina display with a FaceTime camera, while still duplicating features, would provide an experience like none other. The larger screen size would make it completely different than anything on the iPhone, and res would be so much better than iChat on a Mac.

Also, because of the heavy focus on media, they could offer these things with huge amounts of memory not available on the iPod or iPhone. Just a thought.

Processor speed could always be upped as well, especially as complexity of iPad apps increases. However, I would imagine that Apple will always put their fastest "mobile" chip in the iPhone in order to keep it up to par with the competition.

Agree with size, I want more. I would like to see an iPad that would be the size of my 17" laptop antiglare screen---say if you just had the screen itself without the body...now that would be something.

But really, iPad is the future of Apple computing...next step to make iPad better than iPhone would be a flexible OLED iPad that you can roll up and store in your pocket. And then after that EyePhone a la Futurama, and then full on immersive iOS (what they called "virtual reality" back in the 90s). So...Is the point of this thread to dream?
