I was talking to an Apple Rep at Best Buy (so take it for whatever you think) and she said the Mac Mini is not going to stick around. She said a couple months earlier that BB had one of their one day flash sales on the Mini for $79.95! And they didn't sell a single one! Wish I would have stumbled in that day. I'd have bought a handful for presents and other various projects.

Crappola. The Apple rep at Best Buy knows no more than you about what Apple is going to do with Mac Mini or anything else. And it's pretty clear that the "flash sale" for $79 is complete horse****.

This. And they could have easily had the sale, to clean out inventory.

Never happened. I keep a daily look at Best Buy, among other stores. I would not have missed that, in fact, I would have bought them all. Now whether they may have been selling someone's return that looked like it fell down a flight of stairs is another story...

Could it have been a local store and not a national sale?

I suppose so. But if these were new units, as was implied, they would have gotten FAR more for them, and "cleaned out their inventory," by donating them to schools. I just don't buy this "sale," which would have been for HUNDREDS of dollars below their cost.

I still remember when Best Buy discounted the remaining stock of base 2012 Mac minis following the launch of the 2014; they were priced down to $399 ($200 off MSRP), which was quite a good deal considering the value of the 2012 went up following the 2014. ;)

$79 definitely wouldn't happen though, not even for the 2014 models.

I would be interested in getting a new 2018 iMac if they were offered, but I have serious doubts that there will be one (at least a significantly upgraded one). With almost all soon to be released Apple products, there almost always seems to be some sort of spec leaks floating around about them. I have yet to read any significant leaks about a new iMac for 2018. My trusty 2011 iMac is still serving me well, but it is starting to show it's age. I hope that I don't have to wait much past 2019 for a new one.

Typically there aren't many iMac leaks. Even for the 2018 MacBook Pro, the timing of the refresh was almost a complete surprise.

this year imac will come with a significant update exept the ram, the cpu will go 6 core into the higher specs, dGPu hope Vega, redesign with a better cooling inside, hopefully imac pro style, but that will happen only if they remove any hdd or fusion drive from the start, and hopefully a better screen to body ratio display...i mean Apple is cutting bezels on all their products, the imac remain the last one for this year i guess

I guess that is why I have not seen much of anything in terms of leaks. Luckily, I am not in a “I have to get something now” mode like I was for my daughter’s MacBook Pro.

Okay, since you make these assertions so definitively and confidently (saying what “will” happen this year), please explain what evidence you have for that conclusion. Because I believe there is evidence against things like a redesign this year.

I suspect, what you are saying “will” happen, is in fact just what you hope will happen.

There was a leak recently with the Ming-Chi Kuo comments. That indicated that there would be a 2018 iMac, with CPU upgrades and some sort of screen improvement (which I believe means True Tone), and perhaps better GPU performance. No comments about a redesign though, to be clear.

I'm waiting to see what's going to be released. I have high hopes for this year as my Late 2012 - 27" is getting a bit sketchy. My OWC SSD drive has failed to mount (white screen, no volumes found in Disk Utility) for the third time in the last year or so. I'm also having random memory crashes.

I was lucky yesterday that I was able to recover.

I suppose a 2017 model would do well as a replacement, but if there's going to be a significant update, I'd rather hold out until then....

How do you define “significant update”?

No way that's going to happen, it would basically be a mini iMac Pro for half off.

Personally, my money's on either a September CPU bump, or nothing until 2019.

6 core processors. Better GPU than the one in my Late 2012. Retina display, better wifi, newer SSD.

Really, a 2017 would be significant. Just hoping for something better than what is available now.

All very viable and logical upgrades for a 2018 iMac. The only question will be the cooling arrangement - whether Apple remove the RAM access port for the iMac 5k.

It already has a Retina display, and it already has the best Wi-Fi available (802.11ac), and it already has a better GPU than the one in your 2012.

As for 6 core processors, I think the jury is out on that - and even if they offer it it might be at a price point you might not want to pay.

I wish they would have a silver bezel around the iMac's screen, rather than a smaller black one (smaller would be nice too of course). I have the older Cinema Display and it looks really nice and unobtrusive, although no camera.

Why? All the current gen desktop Core i5's have 6 cores as standard, and at the same price as the last gen CPUs. If the CPU is upgraded in 2018 to the current gen then you're getting a six core CPU as standard (and 12 threads if you go i7).

And jetwash from the cooling fans if you go i7 maybe given it looks like the 8700k throttles around the same temps as the current gen i7 [ref another thread]

Apple will make 6 core standard for the 27" like they did on the 2018 15", question is if they cancel the accessible RAM bay, if they do, expect to pay big $$$ for RAM.
I really don't think they'll give the GPU a big bump, but hope they would :)
