Kinda Dissaponting

I was dreading this moment when my 2.93 12 core wasn't the latest & greatest, i suppose i should be happy as it hasn't really changed ?

In the performance test graph they quote:

mac pro 8 core 2.93 baseline
mac pro 12 core 3.06 1.3X

i wonder how it shapes up against the previous 12 core i'm guessing it's like 1.1-1.2 range ?

This was the silent update i guess, the agony lingers on about the Mac Pro's future. They can't do this sort of update next year it's make or break.

9 to 5 has a story "Apple unveils updated Mac Pro" with nothing on it. I guess that says it all.

How can they call it "New" I guess they think we are idiots. Seriously.

I've been one of the people vehemently denying this and arguing against it, but it seems as though it's true. They lack of an upgrade shows that they are planning to phase out. A price drop, no USB 3, no Thunderbolt, no upgraded GPU. All they've done is dropped the slowest mode, changed the product pages slightly and lowered the prices.

This basically a big xxxx you to Mac Pro buyers and a clear sign of the direction they are taking now.

There was never any real evidence until this point so you were right to argue it. Obviously now they are done with workstations.

All I can see is a few minor changes, a draft of a processor tweak and the standard minimum of ram gone up from 8 to 12GB.

This is what they have been up to for two years. Impressive hmmmmm.

Wow, I thought this was all a joke till I'm looking at it right here on their site. It would make no sense to release this spec bump with a redesigned pro around the corner.

I was ready to build my pc workstation. The recent rumors pulled on my sentiment strings. Now I'm pissed. Screw it. All the mountain lion crap was all ios-y integration bs anyways. Guess its back to getting settled into the transition.

Time to move on folks. Apple is done with the professional market.

Didn't think I'd be saying this today, but yep -- this is the truth. Apple is DONE with pros... and with home desktop power users too, it would appear.

I'm not even going to bother with a Hackintosh. I'm just going to buy a ridiculous Windows 7 machine and... not run OS X. My primary usages are video editing, media server, and iOS device hub, and Windows 7 can do all that. Right now Apple is just kicking people like me in the nuts, not offering a computer that does what we need unless we want to pay 14-month-old (or 22-month-old) outdated prices for it. Well, screw that.

i took a snapshot of the prior mac pro store config page, for comparison...

looks like the 2.66 12-core is the same price as before ($4999), but now you get 12 gig RAM instead of 6.

Hey, would you like the "Fast, powerful graphics" an ATI Radeon HD 5770 can provide? "Don’t keep those pixels waiting." You know you want an ATI Radeon HD 5770 in your shiny NEW Mac Pro!

prices have dropped on the 6 core Mac Pros.

$2999

The prices haven't dropped at all.

The dual X5650 is still $4999 (like it was 2 years ago) & they are offering a new lower spec model (I'm thinking it's just the E5645) for $3799.

This is a shambles. Surely it would have been better to just do nothing?

Isn't this how Apple dealt with the xServe? Just let it sit with old specs for a really long time and then disappeared it?

Yep - looks like that's what's happening alright. That said, with the lowered prices, we'll be buying a few of the 12-core systems just to keep the shop running through the transition to Windows for our editing bays.

Sadly all of the refurb prices have not changed at all though.
