For school, sure you could do fine with a PBG4 until the Penryn comes out. I'm assuming you're not a video or graphic design student.

I guess I'm not really waiting for Santa Rosa either anymore, now that the MacBooks are out and they didn't get it. Is there a "Waiting for Penryn" thread? We can meet up there. :D

were you waiting for the MacBooks to get Santa Rosa or the MBP's?
If you were waiting for the MBP's, get one at WWDC if they get released and then upgrade to Penryn when it gets into the MBP's:D like i am planning on doing.

That's a lot of upgrades...
How about you either just buy the PBG4 and wait for Penryn, or you buy a SR MBP after WWDC and "make do" with it for 3-5 years or so? (As I intend to do)

That works too:) but if the penryn mbp's are worth the upgrade, then so help me god i will upgrade! :)

wtf haha.

Yeah I think I'm going to make due. If I can't stand the thing I'll sell it on ebay and try to make 800 bucks or so. Then I'll buy a SR macbook pro (the one that's coming june 11).

If it is on par with the machine I'm on now I'll be okay with it. I can always upgrade the ram right?

It is osx 10.3

Worth it to put tiger on it?

Yes. I'm running Tiger on my 450MHz G4 Cube. Runs well. : )

Assuming you have a Tiger disk. I don't know if it would be worth buying Tiger just to put it on an old PBG4, especially considering you're just going to sell it anyway either in a few days time, or a few months. If you decide to keep it for ever, buy Leopard for it once it comes out.

But if you have a copy of Tiger at home, go for it.

Maybe?

If and when the new MBP's come out with Santa Rosa, will Apple cut the prices on the new macbooks? I know the new ones just came out, but is it possible they would at least cut the price?

Nope. Not very likely.

The Macbook seems to be priced very fairly...and currently (until new MBPs come out) the speed gap between the lines has gotten smaller. Apple has little reason to cut prices of the MB because of the MBP - they appeal to two totally different markets.

"Official Waiting for Penryn Thread" already?

Wow, we're already talking Penryn? I really just want my SR MBP. Shrinking the same architecture chip while pretty much just adding SSE4 doesn't seem to outweigh the risk of the "first cycle" catastrophes that seem to happen. Never buy a car in its first year of a new model, and it would seem the same thing for 45mm chips. Are there further advantages I'm missing?

I'm nervous enough about the LED backlit displays (crosses fingers). But I just keep telling myself that the VAIOs have worked out the kinks before it makes it to the apple folk.

The Penryn CPU should just drop right in to the Santa Rosa chipset, as far as I know. The big question is how much faster Penryn will be - i.e. will it get to 3 or 3.2ghz.

[clarification: I'm not saying it'll be user upgradeable... just an easy upgrade for Apple.]

I don't know what I'm waiting for anymore. But I'm still dying to see what's around the corner. :D

Just so I understand what everything means a little better... Is it the 45nm technology on Penryn that allows it to get that fast? Like, does the 45nm vs. 60nm make a difference in clock speed, or in something else altogether?

upgrade services?

Are there any upgrade services right now which will upgrade soldered chips? Like, can people send in their CD and receive it back with a C2D? (obviously voiding their warranty)

It sure would be nice to have socketed chips..oh hum.

My sources inside Apple tell me that tomorrow is, in fact, Tuesday.
Pipsqueaks?

My first and possibly best joke on these forums, don't press me /o\

+1 to the Official "Waiting for Santa Rosa" Brigade, thought I'd register and share the final fourteen days with everyone else in here. :apple:

And I've picked Tuesday to join, hoping it's a lot more special than Red Nano Tuesday, juice me!

So is this the official countdown to WWDC thread, then? I had thought about making a thread titled something like "Two weeks to WWDC: The Official Countdown Thread" but maybe this one will do...

You're not suggesting Santa Rosa isn't coming at WWDC?! ;)

But you're right, I'm muddying the muddy waters there. I'm waiting on the much touted MBP upgrade whenever it comes, come soon, my first Mac and I've entered into a holding pattern just above MBP central, great view but I'm desperate to get down there!

actually i have heard quite a few things about tomorrow being the date for the new mbp... i could be rong so dont get ur hopes up :)

on the appleinsider forum:

Bearxor wrote on the 20th, "I have a friend who does retail training for Intel. He was called by his boss while I was hanging at his place yesterday, and was told that Best Buy had received Santa Rosa MacBook Pros in that day."

Yesterday, emran 129 said that he ordered his mbp a few weeks ago and recently called the apple retailer.. the retailer said it would arrive around june 1st and when he asked why the retailer told him because of a product update.

Why wait now?

Forgive my ignorance, folks (I'm new around here) but since we're inside the 14 day "If Apple updates the product, you can trade for the new one" time frame, why bother waiting?

I'm planning on picking up a MBP sometime this week, so please give me some insight if you think I shouldn't. Thanks!

I wasn't intentionally suggesting that, but actually I'm starting to have my doubts. Not on any basis, just to make sure my hopes don't get too high. I don't think they usually announce products at WWDC (except the Mac Pro desktop). If all they're doing is an update to a product, it seems WWDC is a rather large event to announce such an update. Unless they're doing a full-blown case re-design, as some suggested.

Whaaat... Best Buy doesn't even sell Macs as far as I know. At least, not in their retail stores. And if they did receive them on the 19th, people would freakin' know by now.

The second AI post sounds a lot more promising, but would the retailer really tell him that? I don't think retailers even know about product updates until the same time as the public knows. Again, the news would leak to the public.

If Apple doesn't update the MBP at WWDC... to put it kindly, you're screwed.

There's a possibility they wouldn't update the MBP then, but instead the next Tuesday, or the Tuesday after, or whatever. I wouldn't bank a purchase on a rumor like you're thinking of doing.
