Whaaat... Best Buy doesn't even sell Macs as far as I know. At least, not in their retail stores. And if they did receive them on the 19th, people would freakin' know by now.

The second AI post sounds a lot more promising, but would the retailer really tell him that? I don't think retailers even know about product updates until the same time as the public knows. Again, the news would leak to the public.

Best buy does sell macs in stores. They have a pilot going right now with full apple sections. Also any Best Buy for Business location carries the MacBook Pro. There are no SKU's in the system.

Second is most definitely not true as well. When I worked applecare we did not know about new products until day of anouncement, they definitely wouldnt tell a 3rd party reseller.

Only insight I had was my CTO replacement being delayed a week until tomorrow but even that is a long shot.

Is this only recently? I've never seen Macs at Best Buys.

Yeah that sounded pretty fishy. Like another poster said, that sounds more like the retailer was just trying to cover their ass and come up with an excuse for the delay.

Are there any upgrade services right now which will upgrade soldered chips? Like, can people send in their CD and receive it back with a C2D? (obviously voiding their warranty)

It sure would be nice to have socketed chips..oh hum.

Just sell it on eBay and buy a new one.

How much do you think such service will cost? Seriously. You have to pay for a C2D chip, the labour, and at the end of it you get a CD chip with lots of solder around its legs.

Rather than start another 'what should I do' thread, I though I'd ask the question here:

I have 12" powerbook 1.5 GHz, but my mom needs a computer that will run windows. I was putting off buying an intel mac until the new ultraportable came out.

Question is, will the macbook hold its value as well as the powerbook until december or so when I can sell it and buy the ultraportable (if it happens)? This is the mid range macbook.

Or should I just install VMWare on my powerbook...

tbh the only reason I can think of for not buying the macbook is that it is heavier, bigger and a lot uglier than the powerbook.

VMWare won't run on your Powerbook, I think you mean Virtual PC. But do you know what kinds of programs your mum is going to run in Windows because Virtual PC might not be fast enough to run the windows programs you want.

Also bare in mind that the ultra portable could well be slower than the current MacBooks (if that matters to you).

Yea I meant Virtual PC, sorry

I dont really mind if the ultraportable is slower in terms of clock speed, as long as it is Santa Rosa based, with GMA X3100

They definetly do or did sell MBPs at Bestbuy... I showed my friend the iSight thing there and sent the picture to myself over email from bestbuy...

Whatever you do, do not ever count on emulation. I tried running Virtual PC on my 1.33 PB with 1.25 ram and it was like I was running windows xp on a 486...absolutely terrible.

I for one have never seen them in BestBuy before...

They do sell them at select best buy stores. Also they not only got rid of the 15" online they are sold out of the 17" MBP also. I want to be sedated for the next 2 weeks.

Bestbuy has carried macbook pros/powerbooks for at least 2 years in the store, but it is only the stores with a Best Buy for Business section not all of them have it. The full blown apple section is something fairly new withing hte last 9-10 months. It's only at select stores right now and is being increased to 200 locations over the next few weeks.

I second that. I bought VPC to try to run a flash program called "SwishMax" on my 17" PB G4 1.67. It was horrid. I also tried running a VOIP program called Ventrilo which also would not work. It is indeed like he said, trying to run Win XP on a 486. From what I hear Parallels is a better choice for that. Me myself, I am waiting for the SR upgrade to trade in my 17" PB so that I can bootcamp my rig and have the best of both worlds.

On a side note. Anyone wanna buy my 17" PB G4 1.67 in like 2 weeks?

Another Tuesday, another disappointment....at least when it comes out I will be getting a free Ipod with it through my education discount.

...then I'm just going to cry myself to sleep.

No problem, because you'll wake up on a Tuesday, and guess what happens on Tuesdays?

Seriously though, remember all the signs pointing to a MBP update soon. The BlackBook has a bigger hard drive and a faster superdrive. It's only inferior in screen size and graphics to the low-end MBP, yet $500 cheaper. Even if they don't update the MBP at WWDC, they will update it very soon afterward, I have to assume.

Where are you getting the free iPod? I don't see anything on the online store with educational discounts and the free iPod...

As for the disappointment, was anyone truly expecting it this Tuesday?

Yeah, I would honestly be appalled to see them not update it by WWDC. It just seems like a few bad moves with getting the MB specs so close to the MBP specs, then not updating the MBP with the most recent technology, then not releasing an update to publicize before school season kicks in...etc.

Do a search - they've done a free ipod with the purchase of a computer for students for the past couple of years. Last year it ran from June 5th-September, so a lot of people around here are hoping to get their MBP and a free ipod.

I really want to get a Macbook.

Should I buy it (nowish) during the free ipod promotion, or should I wait until October-November when they'll (hopefully) update the GPU with the release of Leopard?

I mainly want the macbook for audio recording, but I wouldn't mind to be able to run games like WoW or Spore when it comes out at low/medium settings. (Doesn't need to be full settings, I'm not really THAT picky.)

So should I wait, or buy one now? I know they were just updated 2 weeks ago, but the GMA 950 really bothers me...

I might be wrong but I think WoW already runs OK-ish on the Macbook.

Otherwise, I'm afraid you might be wasting your time waiting for a decent GPU to be put into the Macbook. Although no one ever knows for sure with Apple, it seems that the main distinguishing point between the MB and MBP will remain graphics capability, and the MB's graphics will always be relatively crippled.

If you were expecting it this week, you should have been expecting in on Wednesday since Monday was a U.S. holiday. This is how they've done it in the past.

That said, I wouldn't expect anything today. WWDC is in two weeks.

How much Audio?

What exactly do you mean by "Audio Recording" like you and a guitar or a beatmachine? If you are looking to do hardcore recordings like, full arrangements a MB is pathetic, you'd be looking for a MBP, and might I add, the high end maxed out MBP. That's what I am going to get when SR is out, for the same reason, I am a audio engineer recording on a PC right now, it sucks, but you gotta do what you gotta do. But if you are going to buy something new, get the best Mac you can get. Recording in "Real time" demands a lot of CPU power and RAM, and the MB just doesn't cut it.

It looks like I'm in the same boat now.

It'll either be new MacBook Pro low end or refurbished 2.33 GHz current MacBook Pro. ($1,599 maybe?)

The only difference between MB and MBP is the GPU and they have the same CPU and RAM constraints - your argument holds no water
