Led Bto?

I'm pretty sure with all the rumors that Apple is making a MBP with LED backlit displays. However, is it possible it will be a build to order feature? Though they wouldn't necessarily have to slim down the back of the screen, I'd imagine they would need to mount and route the hardware differently enough to mandate a change mechanically.

Can anyone remember a case in which Apple offered a BTO that drastically changed the manufacturing process in the way I'd imagine the LEDs would?

It would be a tough choice with credit card in hand and a button staring me in the face that had "$400 for LED backlit screen" next to it.

Incredibly doubtful Apple would do this. The greenies would be angry that a screen to save the environment was an optional extra, and not standard. Bloody greenies... They do however have their uses, ie. pressuring Apple to use great screens...

Well it is getting close to the end of our wait everyone. Are you all as excited as me?

You bet. I have been considering switching for over 2 years now, for the last five months I have been waiting for the money, for the last 2 months I've been waiting for an update...and now it's coming :)

Ok guys, you know the drill, everyone jump on the 'next tuesday' bandwagon, then be bummed if it doesn't happen, say we told you so if it does, yada yada yada....

Next tuesday would be cool though :D

LOL,
count me in. hope theres enough room on the bandwagon.

It's funny how I'm hoping for an update just to see what will happen. I probably won't buy a new laptop until September, but I want to see an update come out just so we all can breathe a sigh of relief. I will be quite disappointed if apple doesn't update their product lines to include the faster technology. It would seem almost necessary in order to market their laptops to compete with competitor companies' laptops.

Btw, when can we hope to see an update that includes Blu-ray? Any chance of it happening this year?

In MBPs I reckon Apple would think that a Blu Ray drive adds too much extra weight/size/volume to fit into such a small chassis. All the laptops I've seen with HD Disc drives have been pretty mammoth, and that isn't really Apple style.

External?

Maybe the optical drive will be external, that would allow them to include the latest BlueRay drives and simultaneously slim down the MBP/extend battery life. Hopefully this is the case.

I can't see them making an external optical drive standard on the 15" or 17" MBPs, maybe if they make an ultraportable, it would work well there.

I personally hate the idea of having an external optical drive, its something else to be carried around separately instead of just being part of the package.

It makes sense for an ultraportable, but definitely not for a standard size laptop; well to me anyway .

I don't think that is the drives fault as FastMac offers a BR drive for the Macbook Pro. I think the laptops you see with the drives are 17 inches or greater. I would further suspect that the drive are still too expensive to make it worthwhile for Apple. I am pretty sure most if not all the BR drives for PC's write as well as read.

I didn't know you could get BR drives for the 17" MBP, impressive.

I agree with you about the prohibitive cost, definitely not wortht it for the vast majority of people, even video Pros are unlikely to want one (correct me if I'm wrong) since most of the serious business would be done on a Mac Pro and to transfer between the two could be done quicker and easier with a HDD.

The cost is definitely prohibitive, but I could see it being a BTO option maybe.

Ok, fair enough.

What about a new graphics card? I'm hoping to get my first mac (a mbp) in October, and would quite like an updated card. Is this likely to happen? Or is it a case of, 'it's Apple - they could trot out a major update tomorrow for all we know'?

I don't think they could get away with NOT upgrading the graphics card, its one of the main things lots of people here have been waiting for ( including me) getting the latest and greatest is unlikely, but some kind of update is definitely necessary.

And yeah, Apple can do pretty much whatever they want update wise, but they certainly seem to like tuesdays.:)

Its all but a guarantee they will update the graphics card by October. The GPU is already underpowered compared to the rest of the hardware and it will have been at least a year since they lasted updated the card (in October). And when it comes to technology that is ancient.

The Mobility X1600 is actually from late 2005...

is it likely that the new MBP's will be sold out pretty quickly? I just got enough from graduation to purchase one for college, but I was wondering how quick I need to buy one so I don't buy one on backorder or something.

In the short term, demand will probably vastly outstrip supply, so if you want one quickly, you should order one as soon as its announced.

How much of a delay does this cause if I did order after June 11 instead of after June 5? Would I have to wait several weeks? I've asked this in several places but still haven't seen an answer.

i think you have your dates mixed up...or maybe I do?

WWDC is the 11-15...you wrote something about the 5th...monday(if he's talking about this monday as the keynote) is the 4th.

someone clear this up, please :)

The keynote part of WWDC is Monday the 11th. But there's a rumor that the MBP will be released in two days (Tuesday the 5th). The thing that's bugging me is, if the new MBP IS announced in two days, shouldn't I wait until WWDC because they may announce that anyone who buys a Mac after WWDC will get a coupon for a free copy of Leopard? But the problem is, if I do wait, how long will I have to wait for my new Mac to ship as a result of being behind a huge backlog of orders?
