Good post.

And if you don't like it, take it back and get whatever you want. It's your dough. It's as simple as that. Too much weeping and wringing of hands over this issue.

This made me laugh. As if the average people with barely an understanding of "the cloud," who compose most of Apple's audience, have "spoken" a unanimous agreement of this storage mark-up. Apple is one of the richest companies on the planet, and they're only benefitting from people's ignorance.

I imagine the average consumer thinks something like this:

"Well, I need more space. I really like the iPad, it has all my apps." *looks at price* "Well, I guess I have to pay 100$ more for it."

----------

Nexus 7 - Had one, didn't like the form factor (bezels and thickness) and the lack of tablet optimized apps killed the experience for me.

Kindle Fire HDX - Apple ecosystem, form factor - larger display

Not everything is numbers on a piece of paper......see there are those of us who buy something because we ENJOY USING IT. To me, paying $499 for my 32 GB retina mini that I use CONSTANTLY versus paying $269 for a Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire that would sit in my drawer offers a better value.

Sure - would it be great if the mini had the gamut the Air does? Of course. The Air is absolutely stunning. But I made a choice - I decided that for $100 less, I preferred the overall form factor of the retina mini and was fine with the less brilliant display.

To me it's no contest. And no amount of specs could change that. I tried the Nexus 7 - and I really do like Android on a phone - but on a tablet? The experience didn't compare IMO.

I don't buy my tablets to win some spec war on the internet. I buy my tablets based on my preferences and use case.

I should have been more specific and said the 8.9" Kindle Fire HDX.

And I apologize for calling you a fanboy, it's obvious you actually put more thought into it than it seemed. You certainly put more thought into it than some of the other people in this thread.

Don't bother responding - they will see "orange" instead of "red" kool-aid. Helps a lot so they can sleep at night knowing they didn't get a gimped retina display.

See you assume we are simply ignoring this fact and pretending the display is perfect. I, for one, am not. I know very well what I'm paying for. And I'm telling you - the mini retina is still worth it to me (and seemingly many other people) for a number of reasons other than the color reproduction.

My thing is - if you don't like it, don't buy it. So why is your trolling butt here complaining about it, calling the rest of us sheep and kool-aid drinkers? You don't like the retina mini - we get it. No one here cares about your opinion on the matter.

I don't need help reading, thank you very much. I could sum up the majority of the posts I've been responding to quite easily

"I don't care much about the color gamut, ergo nobody should."

As opposed to "I really care about the color gamut, so everyone else should".

Even with the 8.9 - still form factor comes into play. I think 7.9" hits the sweet spot in tablets for me. Don't get me wrong - I seriously considered the Air. But ultimately, I'll always pick the mini because of the form factor. And the fact that I could upgrade to a retina display AND A7/M7 was plenty worth the upgrade IMO.

TBH, I think there's a very reasonable explanation as to why Apple didn't up the gamut on the mini retina - but it isn't a conspiracy about Apple's greed and blind customers so I'm sure many of you wouldn't care to hear about it.

It's only worth as much as you're willing to pay.

That being said, I really don't see why people are rushing to the defense of a tablet that has a poor color gamut. That's something that people blasted the Surface RT for, why should the rMini get a pass?

I can't speak for others. I don't need to defend the rMini. That thing defends itself. What I do is respond to made up accusations about Apple because, well, they ring false with me and its in my nature.

Today, if I could only have one device, I'd get the Surface Pro 2. That's how much of an Apple apologist I am. I run Windows software, I need to update the firmware on several gadgets that need a Windows PC, and I need USB ports. Apple's design decisions very frequently make me scratch my head. I could list them all here, but I won't. Apple is just a corporation. It is made up of people. Those people are passionate about producing quality products. To impugn their motives is just plain wrong. I'd respond in kind no matter which corporation people are talking smack about.

So Apple is not perfect. They make mistakes. But to attack their morals and ethics because they've produced an AWESOME device that doesn't happen to show 100% of the color gamut, a requirement that someone here MADE UP and nowhere and at no time did they advertise, commit, promise, or even hint they were going to provide that, well, that is just plain wrong. I'd be defending Microsoft is they were being impugned in a similar fashion.

Apple's commitment to create quality products should not be so easily dismissed by internet jockeys with made up controversies. Let's talk about the way iTunes hijacks all my MP3 files, lets talk about how iTunes for Windows is such a poorly written piece of software, lets talk about their revenue distribution model in the AppStore (in another forum, of course, because this is the iPad forum). Let's talk about the lack of external device connectivity, let's talk about the inability to reply to an email and attach a document for crying out loud! Let's talk about REAL problems, not about the made up fantasies of internet posters who wanted 100% gamut and are now crying because they didn't get it. These self inflicted injuries are not worthy of civilized discussion. They are worthy of being mocked and ridiculed. They bring this upon themselves.

So it's ignorance if people are willing to pay an extra $100 for more iPad storage? These aren't 5-year olds - they're adults who can make their own purchasing decisions. Obviously they don't care about the extra cost of storage since that model is still around and the 64GB and 128GB iPads are the first to sell out.

What was it when the market told Microsoft their tablet sucked by not buying it? Was that also ignorance? Or were they making an informed decision?

Apple gets away with it because people find value in the iPad experience as a whole. The decision to get an iPad is made and THEN they look at storage needs.

The price increase for storage bumps won't change until they run out of ways to improve the iPad - which could come in 2014 given the current Air....

I keep telling folks if they are going to stew over a Mini, let it be the first for $329 compared with what the rMini brings to the table.

What do folks do in the evening when the sun is setting and the world has a yellow-red cast? Does everyone run around in tight angry circles because the color balance of the world has shifted? Or do people just adapt and move on?

They adapt.

"Feature for feature, it's identical to iPad Air in every way."

Feel ridiculous yet? Keep doing your eyeroll emoticon, I'm sure that'll shake off your ignorance!

No, you don't have to care about something to admit that some people might have a problem with it. I'm not telling anyone to not buy it, simply to admit that the rMini has a less than perfect screen.

Yeah, you are right. I forgot the "100% Color Gamut" feature.

Oh, and thanks for pulling that screen shot out of context. If you scroll down, they list all the features. I missed the reference to the gamut.... I'm sure THAT will shake off yours...

"Feature for feature. Identical in every way."

iPad air supports a full gamut. That's a feature. Mini does not. Any attempt to talk yourself out of that one is going to make you look even more like an idiot. So please, for the amusement of us all, keep going.

Really.

So "Identical in every way".

Except size, and weight I guess huh.

I did. And I posted the screen you obviously decided to leave out. The one where they actually list out the display features that are identical. I missed the reference to gamut.

Did you by any chance make that up?

I'll be honest.

I don't like inferior products, and it just seems inferior.

THAT BEING SAID, nobody should really believe marketing speak. Seriously. We have people who think Apple really means it's perfectly identical feature for feature, we even have people who think Apple made the rMini because they "care about making high quality products" instead of "Apple is in the business of making money". Everyone here is falling for market speak.

Everyone.

Sorry, I'm currently reading an image that says "Feature for feature, it's identical to iPad air in every way". iPad air supports a full gamut. Mini does not. "Feature for feature, identical in every way".

Clearly you aren't grasping the concept. But it's hilarious watching you try to explain Apple's own advertisement. Let's continue!

You're big on definitions, right? Let's go get one from Websters!

adjective
1.
similar or alike in every way: The two cars are identical except for their license plates.

AAAAH, COLOR GAMUT ON THE IPAD MINI RETINA SUCKS!!!!!

Sorry, couldn't stay calm enough, although I have tried, since the title suggested it.

This argument will probably never die. I assume that 100% gamut would equate to full sRGB coverage. It's not like it's the only thing, but it would be good. As for variation, that has come up all over the place for Apple. Different Cinema display sizes behaved differently. 13 and 15" notebooks look different. I will say that a high deviation from sRGB would kill my interest in a machine before moving on to other criteria.

Why aren't you ranting about the weight? That's another way they aren't identical.

I can hold the Air in one hand. Which means that the difference in weight is an unlisted feature.

Why aren't you ranting about the weight?

Because that discrepancy was already described in the advertisement I posted. Why would I?
