I just don't understand why they can't play it straight with the consumer.

Have a stock allocation for each of their stores marketplaces / territories and simply have a pre-ordering system. Limit stock to 1 per customer.

Once first wave of pre-orders is full, remove ability to order until they know when the next stock will be available.

----------

The invite system is utterly random, people are already scamming folks and it opens the whole system to the black market and scammers with people asking for invites, and sad to say 'idiot's' thinking random person on the internet offering to sell one is 'legit'.. It's just an utter mess of a system and contrary to their approach that having 'invites' allows them to control things - it doesn't. The evidence is plane to see on their forum already.

-------

Such a promising device and what looks a great price - marred and tarnished by their own insanity.

The smashing 100 phones thing is utterly stupid, and rather than wasting energy on such moribund gimmicks, sort themselves out and get things running in a organised proper manner and customers won't be stung by fake scammers promising to sell invites that don't exist.......
Agreed. This is one time when I'm honestly put off from buying the product just because I really don't want to support the company that sells it.

It just shows you what a new company shouldn't do upon a new release. I wish them all the best but part of me hope its bombs so they and others don't make the same mistake twice.

Agree with you guys. This is a classic example of how to alienate customers by prioritising hype and gimmicks over getting an excellent product into the hands of as many people as possible.

That, and the blatant lie about the size. The Z1 in the photo they so gloated about was probably half a metre closer to the camera. Why not come clean and admit a mistake? That tells me to be wary.

Was very interested. Not at all now.

Apparently my friend has a Nexus 4 that is already broken, we're gonna see if we can smash that and win. They probably want people to smash something more valuable, but I'm not about to smash my M8 or Note 3. I'll wait for an invite, which is ridiculous, but I just won't buy the phone if I don't get invited to buy it anytime soon.

Mate you get notified by email to smash a phone and buy the device for 1usd, it's not like people think lol they don't know what phone you have, you just sign up for the list and they select 100 random people to upload videos of phones getting smashed.

I want this phone too but not doing anything crazy like smashing my phone (yet). One thing though, how are they getting away with selling this phone so cheap?

Maybe the question is how have all the other companies gotten away with overcharging so much...

That's true also. I want to see more hands on reviews of the phone. If everything is kosher I'm ready to sell my iPhone and grab two of these.

Why not sign up and see if you get lucky? I'd take one for a dollar. :D Other than that, I'd wait and see if they are legit or not.

Ya, but look at the buzz you're generating for them. That company that is releasing a high spec'd smartphone for an affordable price. That runs CM. That is giving their product away for $1 if you smash your phone. The one that is exclusive and invite only.

So much hype! So much interest. Hell, even though I'd probably not consider one, I'm intrigued.

$299/$349 is all I need to know. Like music in my ears.

OnePlus One is my next flagship phone this year. I love the design. I love that you can switch from on-screen buttons to capacitive since I love Swipe Home Button and link gestures with it and Nova Launcher Prime. Forget the HTC One (M8) or any other $600 off-contract device. I want capacitive buttons like the M7 had! Swiping up for Screen Off & Lock (with Z-shaped animation), swiping down for app drawer, double tap for WakeLock Detector or music player, swiping toward right to change next track, and pressing the home button as a BlinkFeed shortcut with Nova's Slide animation is just so, so slick! Gesture swipes rocks!

Too many good choices and at good prices at that! But now I will get a third "One" to my collection - Nexus One, HTC One, OnePlus One.

Moto E and Asus Zenfone 5 look enticing too. But OnePlus One replaces my other One as the chosen One for 2014! Love the swappable back covers. Very Moto X-ish. Nexus what again? OnePlusOne just made the Nexus 5 look overpriced like the Moto E and Asus Zenfone 5 did to the Moto G.

This company could be 10 people in a strip mall office with a completely outsourced manufacturing staff only capable of making 10 phones a day. We don't know much about them. Like where do they get their RAM, or circuit boards, or speakers, or batteries. The cut corners are certainly somewhere.

They are hardly the manufacturing monster Samsung is, with multi billion dollar R&D and global class logistical and product support. The freight costs alone a Samsung or Apple incurs is more than 1+ is worth several hundred times over.

And I suspect a big reason none of these super cheap Chinese android phones don't make it to the USA is anti-dumping laws. They would probably have issues under FTC scrutiny.

Even ZTE and Huawai Chinese phones that are cheap in the USA, rarely are they regarded as alternatives to flagship HTC's, LG's or Samsungs.

None of this means the product isn't good though.

It seems some idiots have decided to start smashing their phone ahead of even being chosen...

http://phandroid.com/2014/04/24/oneplus-one-smash-the-past-contest-premature-smashings/

The world is full of them..... :( (idiots)

----------

Maybe the question is how have all the other companies gotten away with overcharging so much...

Because they research and develop a phone from scratch. They have an entire manufacturing process.

One Plus One have basically partnered with Find and rebadged the Find 7a. Thereby they have tiny development & manufacturing costs in comparison to traditional manufacturers...

Likewise they won't be spending $350 million on marketing the handset, with indications that they are likely to struggle to push 12,000 units out at launch. Hence the 'invite' system...

Compare that to likes of Samsung & Apple who will sell a million units in first week or so....

So that's why it's significantly cheaper, because R&D costs were low, because manufacturing costs are lower and because they are not spending millions on marketing and finally because they are not spending lots of cash getting the devices out across the world, into stores, into carriers... They are distributing from central hubs and via an online store only....

Take away all those expenses (logistic, R&D, marketing & manufacturing) and you can sell something cheaper....

The reality is however without spending more on marketing & logistics the chances of the device ever posing a threat to even the likes of HTC (who sell considerably less than Samsung & Apple) is very small.

I am not so sure about that part. If they target Asia and China......those are 2 of the biggest emerging growth areas for smartphones. The rest of the globe is starting to reach a saturation point. The with their price points they could sell a lot of phone IF they can keep up with demand. But so far their distribution leaves a lot to be desired......

Nice pictures...

Yeah they want a big show with people smashing newer phones. Looks like a Nexus 4 just won't do. Oh well, I'll wait for an invite.

I suppose there will be people crazy enough to smash a 55, Note 3, S5, etc for a chance at a $300 phone. I was hoping I could smash an old flip phone. :D

I'm also sure there are people crazy enough to do those things. I'm just hoping someone crazy enough to smash a new flagship is also crazy enough to give someone they don't know one of their 3 invites for free, then I'll be set!

I wonder if you'll have to prove on video which model phone your are actually smashing and also prove that it is a working phone? Then there will be no chance of someone using a broken phone, one that got submerged in water, etc.
