I could probably sell my Note 3 for the price of the 64GB, or I could just smash it, get a free one, claim on my insurance and get a new note 3, sell that.

End of June seems like the date when it will be easily available to buy.
Is that when the invites go out? I am not so sure of the availability...it all seems to to be cloaked in secrecy..... but if you have a link to something please share! :)

They announced first 100 to smashers by end of May
Then invites late May / Early June
Then more regular availability late June.

That's seems like too short a space to ramp up IMHO, but we will see if it pans out.

I dunno, somewhere in West Texas
That would make sense. I just want them to make things more transparent. I'm interested in the device (I've got quite a few token points racked up on their forum) but very frustrated by them too.

----------

OPPO are OPO ...... We knew it was a rebadged Find 7a but that's not all they have in common.

It gets worse....

OPO are now banning peoples IP addresses from their forum if they post anything negative or conceived as negative. This includes people complaining that the invite system was stupid etc.. Some folks who posted questions about OPPO and OPO connection are getting their ip addresses banned to.

Basically if your not on their forum blowing hot smoke up their arses you are not wanted there....

---

Just discovered they closed a thread that I got lots of likes on. A thread that basically showed them how scammers are targeting OnePlusOne users, and links to a number of dodgy listings for the OPO. I had 85 likes and nothing but positive feedback, but clearly OPO doesn't like anyone raising concerns over their invite system leading to this black market and so the thread was closed and they took away all my like points...

Seriously this is a company we can trust...

They call themselves 'A Honest Company'.......

Wow I can't believe that happened. What a joke of a company. On principal alone I'll probably pass on this "never settle" experience. I can't see myself supporting such a company.

My current phone (SGS3) has that option available. So far, I don't need it yet. Personally, I would rather just get enough storage and not have to worry about expanding it later.

I use my Micros SD to mostly store music and pics among a few other things. Then all i need to do is place the card in another phone when i get a new one and its all there. Dont need to transfer anything.
And the cards are getting dirt cheap. 32 GB for less than $20. 64 GB is getting cheap too.

I have a N5 with no micro SD so i feel i have to watch it a little and i have a 32GB version.

I think people should avoid this phone at least for the first month, I don't know how reliable this new company's are and people get excited with cheap prices.

You guys know people with OPPO phones?

New OnePlus One looks promising

The new Chinese company OnePlus has already declared their new smartphone will be a "Nexus killer." They're launching their new device in small numbers in May via invite only. Mass release comes the following month. They're also picking a certain number of people to receive the phone for only $1 if they promise to destroy their current smartphone. I haven't looked into exactly how that works, but it's an interesting idea. I think the phone itself is beautiful. The specs are also impressive. And it starts at only $299 off-contract (16GB). It works on both the AT&T and T-Mobile LTE network. Thoughts?

I'll stick with iPhones, I'm not a fanboy but iOS seems so much better than whatever is on this phone :p

Yeah. I know it's kind of an OT post, but I wanted the consensus. I do like how customizable it is, however. There isn't anything you can't change apparently. And no jailbreak necessary.

----------

As a side note, the phones body is made of magnesium, which makes it durable and lightweight I assume?

Avoiding it for a month shouldn't be too difficult :D

More seriously, I don't have concerns about the build quality than other practices OPO employ. If these people worked for Oppo then they should know how to make a good quality device and if it's manufactured in Oppo factories on the same equipment, it should be equivalent.

I had a Find 5 and it was rock steady and having played with a Find 7a, it's the same story. I've also had other non-phone Oppo devices in the past and never had an issue but there's always a chance of a lemon at some point.

Speaking more generally, Chinese phones have come a long way in the last few years. How warranty fares is another matter but it sounds like they're using Oppo's distribution channels around the world. I still prefer Apple's walk-in and rapid turnaround if there are issues rather than weeks of waiting for a mail in option.

If it's a 2-3 month wait to realistically be able to buy one, then I can only see them losing many potential sales as people tire of waiting and other flasgships become available.

While it may be good for people on a budget, I don't think it's a budget piece of hardwear. The specs on it are impressive. The Cyanogen version of Android is probly one of the best. If I was going to buy an Android phone, I would get the 1+1 way before a Samsung and it's bloat wear.
1+ is an offshoot of the Chinese company, Oppo which is pretty big in china. They seem to make some nice phones.
Probly won't stop me from getting iphone 6 though.

Agreed. CNET said the hardware is much better than that of the Galaxy S5. If that means anything to you.

100 lucky winners can now donate their phones to Mobile Medic.

I'm down with that if I'm one of the lucky 100.

100 lucky winners can now donate their phones to a handy cause.

If I'm not mistaken, that was the idea the whole time. Get people with super creative ways of smashing their phones, then when the winners were picked have them donate the devices instead. It's kind of a cool trick.

I doubt it ... There whole build up and Facebook was for destruction. I think they are just responding to the forum outcry and generally bad publicity it garnered in Android Central and other tech blog sites.

I just don't understand why they can't play it straight with the consumer.

Have a stock allocation for each of their stores marketplaces / territories and simply have a pre-ordering system. Limit stock to 1 per customer.

Once first wave of pre-orders is full, remove ability to order until they know when the next stock will be available.

----------

The invite system is utterly random, people are already scamming folks and it opens the whole system to the black market and scammers with people asking for invites, and sad to say 'idiot's' thinking random person on the internet offering to sell one is 'legit'.. It's just an utter mess of a system and contrary to their approach that having 'invites' allows them to control things - it doesn't. The evidence is plane to see on their forum already.

-------

Such a promising device and what looks a great price - marred and tarnished by their own insanity.

The smashing 100 phones thing is utterly stupid, and rather than wasting energy on such moribund gimmicks, sort themselves out and get things running in a organised proper manner and customers won't be stung by fake scammers promising to sell invites that don't exist.......

So how is this different than Apple's pre order crap? People get scammed, people don't get their phones for weeks or a month after the phone is already released because they don't have the stock, and they still sell them in stores the day of release and people that did not preorder get the phone before pre orders. It's crap and I don't see the difference. Yeah the invite system is weird, but it sort of works the same way, and it makes a lot of people mad. But because it's Apple people don't get nearly as mad.

But because it's Apple people don't get nearly as mad.

Typical argument used around here. But totally false.

The truth about the pre order and waiting in line system is that you are in control of whether or not you get a phone. If you have the will power to get up at 2 or 3 AM (depending on your time zone) and keep refreshing the website until you get in and are able to place an order, then go right ahead. If you have the will power to get in line 12 hours or more before they go on sale, go right ahead. In each scenario, the individual takes responsibility and takes control of whether or not they get a phone. If they want one bad enough, they can make it happen. I myself have stood in line for over 12 hours for an iPhone. I have woken up early and refreshed my page hundreds if not thousands of times for an iPhone pre order. But you know what else? I have also woken up early and refreshed my page constantly to get an order in for my Nexus 4 before everyone else. I did the same thing for the Nexus 5. In all 4 scenarios, I was in control of whether or not I got a phone. If I wanted it bad enough, I could make it happen by simply being somewhere earlier than others or getting on a website earlier than others.

This phone is different. The individual has no control. An invite system, at first at least, is pure luck. How much you desire to order a phone plays no part. There could be some guy who kinda sorta maybe wants the phone, and he gets an invite all the while you could be dying on the inside for a phone willing to stand in a line for over a day, but you don't get an invite. The individual has no say in the matter, and I think that is what is most upsetting.

I would also like to point out in my past example that having to get up early and constantly refreshing the page happened with both the iPhone and Nexus phone. So your argument falls flat.
