You need to check THIS to hear the sound when you change the volume.
The "pop/click" sound somehow is now gone when I click volume up or down on my BT keyboard. that started late Sat. night. I checked my System Pref. > Sound > Sound Effects. The option 'Play User Interface Sound Effects' is checked

Again with Volume, the computer is now louder. Not sure if this was a new OS change or what. I used to have my volume around 4, 5 bars for normal regular sound. Now I only need 1 bar.

BUT..its not a huge deal personally. The Mac is connected to speakers with its own volume control (I haven't touched the volume on the external speakers in a long time before tonight - I just turned it down.) Some use the built in iMac speakers so it may affect them more. Just something I noticed.

Just general overall lagging on programs, accessing folders, opening photos. I reset the PRAM, SMC. I'm on a 2011 iMac 3.4ghz I7, boosted RAM to 12GB.

**Also boot time. It used to be darn good. 15-20 seconds on Mavericks. Now it's pushing 45-60 seconds! I get the Apple logo and a loading bar underneath it - then to a white screen - then back to the logo and loading bar that hits 100%. Then to my login screen.

I'm seeing high Spotlight CPU usage often when I'm not using the computer. I get that it needs to index things but it was installed days ago. Hitting 99% or more for long periods when I'm not using the machine isn't right.

Is anyone else getting their whole computer crashing when browsing via Safari?

Had it happen to me twice now. Sent off the crash reports to Apple, but I think i'll file a bug too. This happened twice when I only had three tabs open (all static pages, no video)

Ever since using the Public Beta Yosemite, I have never had a crash using Safari and same with the GM release. Have many open sites and still no crashes. Must be something else danny86. Others have had no issues while still other have. Has to be something you did, a bad download of the OS X, changes to the system (app perhaps), etc. Have you done a PRAM just for the heck of it ?

Interesting. I never bothered to try it during the dev previews (used Yosemite since preview 2). I used to use Chrome, but like Safari so much in Yosemite that I made the switch. I have done a PRAM reset for giggles :) I did that right after I installed Yosemite. No harm trying again I guess.

Everything else is working swimmingly so far, only the Safari issue. Hopefully it was a sequence of flukes (here is to hoping) :D

Hi,
had the same issue. You might have custom dictionaries (which Yosemite doesn't seem to support yet) stored in one of the following folders:
/Library/Dictionaries (for system-wide dictionaries)
~/Library/Dictionaries (for user-specific dictionaries)

Try to remove them and deactivate them in the preferences of the Dictionary app. If Spotlight doesn't work right away (especially if system dicts are concerned), reboot.

Find here the list of system dictionaries that seem to work after upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite:
/Library/Dictionaries/Apple Dictionary.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Diccionario General de la Lengua Española Vox.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Duden Dictionary Data Set I.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Dutch.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Italian.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Korean - English.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Korean.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Multidictionnaire de la langue française.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Multidictionnaire de la langue française.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/New Oxford American Dictionary.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Oxford Dictionary of English.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Oxford Thesaurus of English.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Portuguese.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Russian.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Sanseido Super Daijirin.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Sanseido The WISDOM English-Japanese Japanese-English Dictionary.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Simplified Chinese - English.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Spanish - English.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Thai.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/The Standard Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese.dictionary
/Library/Dictionaries/Turkish.dictionary

(User dictionary folder is blank)

Hope this helps!

So guys, how to fix this bug?

I though it was just on the beta and preview, but it is still bugging me on the official Yosemite.

My customised dictionaries work just fine in Spotlight with all the versions up to Mavericks.

On Yosemite, four out of five dicts work flawlessly in Spotlight, but the main one (English-Vietnamese) doesn't. When this dictionary is selected as a default in Dictionary, Spotlight lookup keeps spinning for ages (see the image).

I'm lured by Spotlight's new look and power, which drive me to upgrade to Yosemite. It has a new look. Oh yes! But is it powerful? Oh la la!

(late) 2013 rmbp bird service 100% CPU hot.

After a clean install of Yosemite (on a formatted SSD), whilst in work today I noticed that my rmbp seemed a lot warmer than normal. After loading Activity Monitor and checking the CPU monitor I could see that a process named Bird was running at around 100% CPU utilisation. Killing the service only worked for a short while as it re-loaded.

I moved my files (3GB or so) from the iCloud folder into Documents which made no difference to the Bird process.

I then opened System Preferences, iCloud and unchecked iCloud Drive (accepting the message that appears). Almost immediately the Bird process dropped to 0% utilisation.

It seems there is a bug in the iCloud sync process. Hopefully fixed in 10.10.1

Also interestingly, the Bird process used almost no bandwidth, so I'm not sure this is the process that directly sync's to the cloud, though it is obviously used somewhere.

The Bird process will of course hugely reduce battery life on any Macbook that is not running on mains power.

Just fixed the volume up/down on mine. On the "Sound Effects" tab in the Sound preferences, make sure you have "Play sound effects through:" selected to a specific device. For whatever reason, after the upgrade, "internal speakers" were no longer selected and the "Play feedback when volume is changed" was not selected either.

Bingo, that was it! Thank you, I really appreciate it! :)
Odd, it was working before and somehow it just switched to this setting.

I did notice this just now. Not very clean and "Apple-like." Doesn't bother me, but it's something I wouldn't think is 'normal.'

In Dark Mode with transparency off.
*Transparent .PNG problem(?) Not sure.

Black corners also show up when Dark mode is turned off
- They DO NOT appear when "Reduce transparency" is checked.

Is anyone else getting their whole computer crashing when browsing via Safari? …

If the kernel panics in that situation (if the computer restarts unexpectedly), then I recommend:
  1. be prepared to enter your admin password at the command line
  2. in Terminal, run the command below
  3. restart OS X
  4. either begin a separate topic or ask at Ask Different (for troubleshooting, I'm more active there than here).
Code:
sudo nvram boot-args="-v keepsyms=y"

Hey, yeah i'm familiar with those boot flags and the Terminal.
It hasn't done it since those two previous times, and i've been on it since... perhaps it was some conflict of interest.

*hoping it stays away as I have work to be doing* lol

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but I'm having two annoying issues on Yosemite. One is being addressed on a different thread (cursor lag when a BT peripheral is being used). The other is regarding the system volume.

Sometimes all I get when adjusting the volume using the keyboard is the icon like there was no soundcard present. Sometimes, I adjust the volume and nothing happens. But what I managed to reproduce every time is that, whenever I adjust the volume on the keyboard, it doesn't move the slider on the Menu Bar or Audio System Preferences. If I leave the slider at 100% on the Menu Bar/System Prefs and adjust the volume using the keyboard, the slider will stay at 100% even though the volume actually adjusted.

I reset the PRAM, SMC and reinstalled Yosemite. Nothing fixed it. Could you, please, try reproducing this and see if it happens to you as well?

Interesting, mine does this when Reduce Transparency is on, be it dark or regular mode. Just Dark Mode doesn't do this.

On another note, transparency is making my 2010 15" Macbook Pro slow to a crawl. Also, on an external monitor, activating Mission Control produces distortion. This reminds me of upgrading to Lion which broke my graphics card and I had to get my logic board replaced twice.

Fetch is FU as well.

When I click on "Put" to upload files, the menu that pops up is too big; the Cancel and Put buttons are behind the Dock! (You can still click on the top of the buttons, though.)

Yes, you can hide the Dock and see the buttons, but still, didn't ANYONE at Apple try out the menus with the Dock in visible mode?

I have a similar problem. Time freezes, none of the menu works.
(The menu do appear, but I cannot highlight anything)

I updated last night when I got home from work and this is present here too.

Also, have you notice that the minimise/maximise/fullscreen buttons in iTunes 12 now do their own thing and stay coloured even if the system theme is set to graphite?
