I don't know about yours, but I overheated a 970Pro five minutes after power-up, while Spotlight was indexing. Some AHCI PCIe drives start thermal throttling very easily too, like SM951-AHCI.

Since most of the year we are over 30ºC down here with some summer days near 40ºC, I personally wouldn't use any PCIe drives without a heatsink, not even for testing. You should use DriveDX and check your temps, warm drives have less endurance and fail sooner.

FWIW... That's probably a pic of a dual M.2-SATA controller. It's highly unlikely that those M.2 ssd's would ever get too hot to throttle. ;)

Alex,
my boot drive SM-951 AHCI has been steadily getting slower - dropped seq read from 1500 MB/s to 700s, and seq write from around 1k Mb/s to 105 Mb/s (!!)

Drive Rx is telling me the temperature is around 46 Celsius, and is painting some yellow warnings.

Is the degrading performance likely to be due to thermal throttling, or rather would it be TRIM-related (or both?)

What do you think?

At any rate, would I be better off booting off something else :)

tx

There are a lot of Alexs here, but I don't think of another one who speaks Portuguese and has a lot of SM951-AHCI ;)

It's probably three things:
  1. TRIM not working automatically, making the SM951 write throughput go to a fraction of the usual. You can get it back booting single user and running fsck -fy. Since this is a firmware problem, you will need to this again from time to time. Try to keep at least 20~25% of total size of your drive free for garbage collection to work, this helps a lot.
  2. Cell wear, you can get that with DriveDX Wear Levelling indicator and Media Wearout indicator.
  3. Thermal throttling, install a heatsink.
You can resolve easily 1 and 3, but if your Wear Levelling indicator and Media Wearout indicator shows high usage for some cells, it's better to move your drive to archival purposes and use a new one as a main drive.

Post a DriveDX report for your drive.

just as a side note running fsck -fy does not force trimming on APFS volumes sadly

(at least it does not say "trimming blocks" like it does on HFS volumes)

I think you have to boot into single user mode AFAIK. I’ve heard that it works, but I haven’t done it myself.

BTW, the Temperature Indicator says 36% OK

One thing that you can do to get your throughput back is to backup all your files, install Sierra or High Sierra with HFS+ on your SM951, then boot single user and force a fsck -fy to trimm all your sectors. This always get the throughput to normal levels for me.

Your real problem is that Wear Levelling indicator shows that you probably used your blade while almost full for some time, your most used cell have 955 cycles of erase/write. This will be a problem.

Code:
173 Wear Leveling Count 955 68.4% OK

Nope... same speeds. So maybe now to formatting the blade to HFS+

Alex, thanks for being so helpful - and I did enjoy learning what that 955 meant! (no. of times written)

Alex, I reformatted the 951, to HFS+ (boots very fast...), and restored from a backup drive to it using CCC, except Mojave, not Sierra or HS - is that critical (to have used one of the older OS?).
Wear leveling count went up a bit from 955 to 967...
And after a single user fsck, speeds haven't improved.
Taking a bit of risk (but with backups) I tried trimforce enable, seemed successful, but the systemp report says trim not enabled, and speeds haven't improved.

So, time for a new blade?

From page 1, there are several interesting 1T blades - none cheap :)
In some other thread, you mention blades that play more nicely with trim - in your experience, what are some good bets?

always grateful,

mike

All Mac Pro vetted M.2 blades are here on the first post of the thread Blade SSDs - NVMe & AHCI.

I got tired of SM951-AHCI as my main disk, all my blades are now data disks, and I'm using a Samsung 970 PRO 512GB as my main disk.

If your buy a cheaper blade, you will have to replace it a lot sooner since you seems to make a lot of cell cycles, Wear Levelling of your blade proves this. Maybe it's better to invest in a blade that is designed for longevity and the best for this on the prosumer market today is 970 PRO - the last blade to still use MLC cells.

Don't buy any QLC blade, you will damage it a lot sooner than the SM951-AHCI since lifetime of QLC cells is a quarter or less than a MLC cell. TLC has half the life expectancy of MLC, btw.

My next blade will be another 970 PRO, just bigger.

Big $ diff between EVO 970 and EVO 970 Pro - is the EVO 970 still decent?

It's 970 Pro, 970 EVO or 970 EVO Plus. There isn't a EVO 970 PRO.

Check first post of the Blade thread I linked, you will see the differences. 970 EVO is 3D TLC and probably have half longevity of SM951-AHCI 2D MLC.

Alex, many thanks - just bought a 1T 970 PRO. Do you think it is a wise idea to remove the SM951 from my Angelbird XP1 and install the Pro? Or is it safer to get a new card (just thinking about older thermal pads, etc)

It's normal, DriveDX temperature sensors give a erroneous impression here, it shows the temperature % relative to the maximum recommended operating temperature.

Depends on what you have in slot 4, and your work flow.

Hi. sorry for the late response I've been busy as hell. Well, I use my computer mainly for music production, eventually some video editing but nothing too fancy, But music Production heavy loads!!!!!, a lot of Samplers and Virtual Instruments, I've been trying to find also what would be the best option for the NVME if APFS or HFS, THanks!!! It's a Mac Pro 5,1 2010, 12 cores 2.66 GHz
