Thanks.
I was too lazy to read and too fast to buy. So definitely bought a wrong thing. Got to sell it.

Could you please tell me which controller would you recommend for 2x Evo 970 Plus 2TB on cMP5.1 targeting Mojave & Big Sur?
regarding SSD7120.. where are you selling it - I'm a buyer at the right price

Does having both a Radeon RX580 and a Highpoint pcie drive sled right next to each other in the 16x slots cause overheating issues? I'm a bit worried about doing this because the RX580 is right up against the highpoint when you put them both in the 16x slots.

I searched everywhere, but could not find reliable information.

The Samsung SSD 980 Pro is capable of (theoretical) 7000 MB/s (read) and 5000 MB/s (write). Is there a PCIe controller card for the Mac Pro 7.1 2019 available that supports that speed for a single SSD? Most controller I looked at (Highpoint, Sonnet) only seem to support 3500 MB/s (read) for a single SSD and the 7000 MB/s (read) for two SSDs in RAID 1.

Anybody have experience?

Just get a card that supports PCIe 4.0. PCIe gen 4 cards are mentioned in the first post.

I used a HighPoint SSD7505 in my MacPro3,1 for up to ≈6000 MB/s.

Hi all,

I want to upgrade my Mac Pro 3.1 to an NVMe SSD (SAMSUNG 980 Pro) and install Monterey with OCLP.
I have already applied the Dosdude APFS rom patch.
What kind of PCIe adapter should I buy? There are particular models that work better on this Mac Pro?

Thank you

Interesting, although I'm not sure I'm willing to sacrifice access to two SATA drive bays to do this (I'm already using all of them). Also I'm surprised that you don't sacrifice performance by putting the video card in a 4x slot as opposed to a 16x slot.

But back to the original question, what would happen if I put both the highpoint and video card in the 16x slots right next to each other without doing your suggested modification? Will it work okay or will I encounter overheating issues? I'm guessing that it does cause heating issues since you went through the trouble of making that thread, but I'm curious to know how serious a problem it is from anyone who's tried it.

You can hang the drives from the three drive bays over the PCIe cards.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/pcie-ssds-nvme-ahci.2146725/post-29613683
That's good news, but it seems like now you have replaced one overheating problem with another because now the video card fan is right up against the HDs in those bays. Not to mention the loss of performance from your GPU card if you put it in a 4x slot as opposed to a 16x slot (I know it's negligible, but it's still a loss in performance). I could see going for this configuration if you're using two Highpoints and want to use them both in the 16x slots. But I only plan on using one.

So I'm still wondering if anyone can answer my original question. How serious are the heating problems if you put both the RX580 and the Highpoint in the two 16x slots without modification?

Hi Guys!

I didn't find it on the list on page 1 and I have a question.

Does Intel 660p Series SSDPEKNW020T8X1 2TB NVME SSD works on Macpro 5.1? There are some people saying that it works... what do you think?

Thanks in advance

The drives are not in the bays anymore. The drive sleds you see in bay 3 and bay 4 don't have any drives attached to them. They keep the SSDs you see in this picture from falling out.

Re the original question, I have been running a Pulse RX580, slot 1 and Highpoint 7107A-1 in slot 2 and so far have not had any heating problems. The one problem was I had to insert small spacers to stop the fans of the 580 hitting on the studs on the bottom of the Highpoint. Please note that some 580 cards are larger then the pulse and you may not be able to use this combination.

Thank you. What do you use for spacers?

Why so an unstable constuction? With the right adapter and cables you can install it more stable.

SSDs are not heavy. It's stable enough just sitting like that. I could make it stable by attaching the construction to the drive sled (drill some holes into the drive sleds and add fasteners).

There's not enough room for 3.5" HDDs in that orientation, but two 3.5" HDD's can fit in this space if rotated 90° and they won't require any space where the drive sleds currently are.

This positioning of the SSDs allows a double wide PCIe card to be installed in slot 4 as pictured in @zedex 's post at https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ll-never-again-interfere-with-slot-2.2197527/ to satisfy @James Murray 's requirement of still being able to use the drive bays.

I think some rubber feet with adhesive backing (or double sided tape) would work. Just find out how tall the feet can be to comfortably fit without adding too much stress.

The rubber adhesive pads in the link are similar to what I used, available in different heights, and agree just enough not to stress the cards/slots.

Hi Guys,

I'm choosing a 2TB M.2 NVME SSD for my Macpro 5.1
After a lot of searching I bought a Kyrom.2 EVO card for this SSD! But I'm not sure which SSD blade to choose...
I've already read the compatibility list on page 1, but I would like to know if anyone has used the new 2TB Samsung 980 PRO on MacPro 5.1
Does it work?
It will fit on my Kyrom.2 EVO?

I know I won't reach the full speed of 980 Pro because of PCIe limitations of MacPro 5.1 but maybe in the future I can use it on a new MacPro M1... who knows...

In my country the price of the 980 Pro 2TB is almost the same as the 970 EVO Plus 2TB...

What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

I read somewhere that using a Samsung 980 M.2 bade in a M.2 PCie adapter with a PCIe 3.0 switch will overcome the issues that some are having running them in a basic M.2 PCIe adapter.

Please read the first post of this thread, this is explained there. Btw, it's not USB external storage, but external storage.

Thanks for the reply. I had read the first post, but it is very long and contains a lot of information. It is quite hard to work out exactly what you need from there so was asking for some information to confirm what I was seeing or tell me I'd done something wrong.

Oddly I also have a Kingston SHPM2280P2H/480G PCIe 4x drive. I remember this showing up as internal storage on the Mac Pro, it is currently in a PC. So you can see where the confusion comes from :)

Your memory is messing with you. Only SATA drives connected to the Mac Pro southbrige SATA ports (SATA bays and ODD) are internal for the Mac Pro Firmware.

Please re-read that part of the first post.

What's the current consensus of running the Ableconn PEXM2-130 with a SINGLE blade on the Mac Pro 5,1?
I'm thinking of currently purchasing one Samsung 970 EVO Plus and adding another one later.

I ran a single 970 EVO on the Ableconn card (Mojave) on my 5,1 for nearly a year. It has been faultless. A few weeks ago I added a second 970 EVO Plus to the Ableconn and installed Big Sur on it and it too has been faultless. Both 970s have passive copper heatsinks on them. Temps range from 34c to 50c when running flat out. I'm finding that whatever blade is the boot drive tends to run about 5c hotter than the other blade according to iStat Menus.

in your first post you mentioned the PRO version of the 980. In the last post you mention the regular non-pro version, so I am not sure which one you are really referring to. In any case, I can speak of the latter (standard Samsung 980). I have a 1TB model of the 980 as my boot drive running macOS 12.0.1. It works flawlessly. I think it will work well for you.

Edit: Samsung removed the EVO naming convention on the 980s, at least that’s what I remember, others can confirm.
