I will install a nvme also but for the other sata ssd: I want to make them faster. I need speed for music production…

I have 2 Sonnet Tempo cards in my Mac, which I am very happy with.
They double the speed of the ssd.
They cost about £100 each (without ssd).

Sata2 sleds : 250mb
Sata3 pcie : 500mb

Sata 3 Card ok. There are sata 3 cards for like 20$ so I don’t want to buy it for this price. Why should I ? Sonnet is a good thing… but if not necessary I don’t spend more money.

Changing from SATA2 to SATA3 really only benefits sequential transfers while most of the time transfers are 4K random and even the best of the SATA SSDs never get over 70~80MB/s with QD4K.

So, most of the time being connected to the Mac Pro SATA2 is not the bottleneck that a lot of people think it is and only applications that use constant sequential data, like video editing, benefit from SATA3 cards.

Accessing an audio library is definitively not sequential. Anyway, this is not the correct thread for SATA questions, there is a dedicated thread for that:

In that case I'd go for NVMe and never look back...
So if I want to install a sata3 card on pcie and a nvme pcie card (normal 1500mb/s) I could go for a normal 20$ card on Amazon? I wouldn’t need an expensive sonnet… or a raid card to get 6200mb/s…

You don't want to go cheap with the card.
You need one with decent cooling.

Hi everyone.

WD SN750, simple M.2->PCIe adapter.

Sometimes I get wake KP:
3rd party NVMe controller. PCI link down. Delete IO submission queue.
Mac goes sleep normally, but sometimes can do cold boot instead of normal wake and give me the KP log. Sleep duration doesn't matter: can run into KP right away, can wake up normally after many hours.

Has anyone faced such problem?

Ok i understand. i didnt know that nvme can get hot... But the icy box is with a good cooling. Amazon rewievs said.
But one with better quality like the ,,aguacomputers Kryo´´would be better. Thanks to KeesMacPro for the advice! I now what i have to buy now.

cMP could also install a 2½" FF SSD, like a Samsung 870 Eco. That just plugs in like a regular HHD into one of the drive bays with an adapter like this:

Yes, since about 12 years ago.

Another option to use 2.5" drives in cMP bays if you happen to own a 3D printer :

Cheap and fast ^^

"Me too" chimes in here. They are good pieces of a product if you ask me. Precise, and reliable to fit in there as promised. Much better than the 5,1 replacement caddies for 3,5" to new bigger capacity 3,5" HDD ones ever were.

Late to the party I know but that's the story of my life! ;)

Adding a 12-Core 2010 Mac Pro to my 'collection' and I know I will end up reading this thread from start to finish but in the meantime I would like to ask a question first if I may?

Am thinking of installing a Samsung 970 EVO Plus on a Silverstone PCIe->NVMe M.2 adaptor as a boot/system drive and have seen that later Samsung drives are now compatible. I also have some spare 850/860/870 standard SSD's kicking around and plan to install them in the drive bays using the OWC Mount Pro which look cool. My questions are as follows;

1. Is this combination a good choice?
2. How does it rank up there for reliability/performance etc. or would I be advised to look at something else instead?
3. Is there a preference for which slot the adaptor card is fitted into? Wouldn't waste the only x16 slot left after fitting the graphics card but does either of the two x4 slots have a priority or might be better suited to a boot drive?
4. Would this combo run OK under 10.13.6 High Sierra? Asking because my oldest iMac is stuck on High Sierra and I would like to keep them on the same OS if possible. Unless there's a huge advantage in 10.14-> of course!

End of questions...:)

Thanks & kind regards,

Welcome!

About your questions:
1. Yes, good choice but for the SSDs: use the EVO/ PRO models (850/860) avoid the QVO : they are known for issues and there are reports of issues with the 870 too.
The 970 EVO Plus is excellent , but only works in the MP with a firmware not older than ~ 2years .
So recently bought will be fine.

2.I've never had any issues with the afore mentioned drives , very reliable and good performance.

3. The card is x4 , so the slot doesnt matter . That said, slot 3 and 4 share lanes, so for optimum performance, I wouldnt install for example 2 of these cards in slot 3 and 4.
Might be a consideration to install the card in a slot not directly above a hot GPU.

4.To get NVMe boot support , you will have to update the BootROM to the version that comes with Mojave 144.0.0.0.0
After the BootROM update you can use the NVMe blade as an OS drive running High Sierra.

For a detailed guide on how to install Mojave and/or update the BootROM:

EDIT: Not sure what Silverstone card you're referring to. Make sure it's for a single blade and with a heatsink or look at the first post for recommendations .

Thanks for the reply and the welcome KMP,

1 & 2. Yeah the SSD's are all EVO's so I should be good to go then. ?
3 & 4. I'll cast my eye over it when I get round to getting hands-on. I have designed/built many PC's over the years and have been into Mac since 2011 so looking forward to opening up that gorgeous chassis and having a play!

The Silverstone card looks like this and so has a single blade but no heatsink it would seem;

I've already ploughed through the first few pages in this thread but sometimes I start from the newest post and work backwards as things evolve over time.

I need to go take a look at the GPU thread now...:D

Thanks again.

Kind regards,

Personally I'm not sure about the quality of this Silverstone card.... and without a heatsink you may cook your blade.
Which means additional costs or... buy a quality product for the same price.
An all time favorite is the Aquacomputer m2 KRYO (EVO).

Enjoy the classic Mac Pro , IMHO a milestone in the history of (Mac) computers : )

Just spotted the Sabrent NVMe adaptor. Half the price, no flashy LED and looks like it doesn't require removal of the backplate?

Please read the first post of this thread.

Btw, without a heatsink you will overheat your 970EVO+ to the point of voiding the warranty the first time you install macOS on it. Yes, it will cook the blade with the install and the Spotlight indexing - don't do the same mistakes we did and documented on the thread.

Thanks for taking the time to reply tsialex.

Oh but I did...and I am ploughing my way through all 111 pages of it albeit slowly. The problem with Page 1 on an 111 page thread is sometimes the info/links can get outdated despite best efforts in keeping it up to date which is why I sometimes start at the last page and work backwards to cross reference! ;)

Interestingly the link I posted to the Silverstone adapter was from a well known supplier of refurbished Mac Pro's and is their recommended solution so I would guess they don't have too many warranty issues or they wouldn't promote it?

As I mentioned I have already ordered the M2 Kryo EVO and also like the look of the Sabrent as it doesn't require removal of the PCI blanking plate so would be interested to hear any opinions as its half the price of the Kryo and doesn't have the tacky LED;

Thanks & kind regards,
