Great separation between the lit trees and that cool background wall.

Thanks Phrasikleia...much appreciated. Whitish/grey granite cliffs that reflect a ton of light and deep shadows on the valley floor combine for tricky exposures.

I hope 2014 is a good year for you, your mom and the rest of your family. Hope too that you can get out and shoot some photos again. I'm thinking of last January when I got a new camera too and we had the longest winter I remember and instead of having blossom on the trees everything just got more and more colourless. Frustrating!

Thanks for the kind words - 2014 already has a positive feel to it. Can't change the past, but we can mould the future.

Funny how we see things differently. I like the shadow of the fence on there and would call it an interesting detail! To me, it just lifts it somehow. :)

Ditto - I think the shadow adds to the picture, as opposed to taking away.

If I had some good shoes on I would have went out a little further :p

We have ice problems around here and this year more than ever. In this weather, I don't leave home without my cleats. $15.00 a pair and they work perfectly. I'm sure they've saved me, and more importantly my gear , from a couple of bad falls. Highly recommended for your kit.

Thanks for the recommendation! This was actually my first time shooting out in anything like that. I had some bald shoes on, but if I head up there again I will definitely get a pair so everything's a bit easier.

Thank you everyone for the comments on my previous pic. To tell you the truth I didn't remember about that sign until you guys mentioned it here. I think at the time I was thinking I could crop it out... but what fun would that be. :)

Anyway, here's my first attempt at HDR. Couldn't get right in front of it (too many people) but maybe next time the wife lets me bring the tripod I can get it centered. Then again, there's something I like about not having it be completely centered. What do you all think?

Very nice lfhdez. The HDR is subtle.

I think the shot could benefit from a tighter crop. I don't think the foreground pavement area adds anything to the composition in this case and I would crop it out. At the same time I would lose the lamp post on the right as it's a bit distracting.

If you get a chance to redo this shot, that foreground area could add a lot with the embedded wording that looks like it may be brass. The trick will be additional lighting that makes it really sparkle. Off camera flash (if you have one) from the side would be fun to try.

After the crop, check to see how your overall exposure looks. Right now it's looking a bit under exposed but that may change with a crop.

Thanks for the feedback Ish & Parkin Pig. Funny how we see things differently.

And I do hope 2014 continues to be a better year for you and yours.

Night photography is difficult for me but very fun! The writing in the foreground is brass. I'll try the crop you mentioned and see how I can play with lighting if I get the chance again. I don't have an off camera flash and they rope that area off before the fireworks so It'll be difficult to light it properly but maybe I could light it with a small flashlight? I dunno. I'll play with it. Thanks for the advice, Peter!

As many of you know, I am a man on a mission to play this photography lark on a mean and lean budget! I didn't feel the need to pay $1000 for a macro lens when I could get something equal in image quality for $350! Just received my 24mm tilt-shift lens yesterday. It was a toss up as to go with the first iteration of the Canon TS-E 24mm or the relatively new Samyang T-S 24mm. After much research and discovering that in regard of image quality they are on par, I went with the Samyang. The Samyang has a little bit more distortion than the Canon, but that's an easy fix thanks to PTLens. If you have stubby fingers, or you are a little rough on your gear I would not recommend the Samyang tilt-shift for you.

After a little while playing with it this afternoon, I feel it's a good purchase for me and should last quite a few years. Later I may get a 17mm Canon TS-E, if I really need substantially more quality in image. Only time will tell, as I have seen some superb pictures come out of this budget lens!

This is me playing with and learning about focal planes, so I can use this thing easily when I get outside with it. Not exactly what a 24mm lens is designed for.

This is with tilt and shift applied, I forget how much of each though.

I like anything on a budget! I like the DOF in this from the head to the vase. The quality seams good (at least to my eyes).
I think the flower is past its best though!

Got to get me some boots. I have worn wells the last few times I have been out (because of all the rain). However they are the type of boots you really only wear for cleaning the car, not walking miles.

Another one from IronBridge. I had to dull down the small extension on the right of the tower as it was a bit distracting. Was hoping to get out today but it's raining again and my daughter has announced we are going shopping!

Nice shot. What lighthouse is this? I was in Grand Haven, MI earlier in the week, it was so icy I didn't want to walk out there either.

This is a lighthouse on the Lake Michigan side of Sturgeon Bay. I saw your photo earlier and they looked very similar, I was questioning it as well haha

Looks very cool, I was hoping I could visit it sometime, but that's quite the trip from here:D.

Long time lurker, first time poster! There are some amazing photos in these photo of the day threads!

Recently brought a canon 700d, so thought I'd join in the fun!

Here's one from today, had a trip down to Devon. Any tips and feedback is always welcome, I know I've got a lot to learn!
