Giant Sequoias

Image

I went to see the Giant Sequoias in Mariposa Grove, Yosemite. It's was a humbling experience that's hard to put into perspective through photographs or words.

The largest tree in the grove is the "Grizzly Giant" (not pictured). At approximately 2,000 years old and 8.5 m (28 ft) in diameter at the base, it looks very surreal - like some out of a Spielberg movie.

Two things crossed-off my bucket list in one trip…Yosemite and the Giant Sequoias. :)

Are you going to see the General Sherman Tree in Kings Canyon National Park as well while you're there?

Here is a very old one, just to piss off Apple fanboy who has a similar shot floating around. :p

Edit: the previous version was as shot 5 years ago, I went back and lightened it up a bit:

The old version was like this: Sailing.

Trying something a bit different here - while most people just take pictures of the famous entrance gate on the right, I'm trying to find a way to capture the old Victorian industrial environment it sits in:

Nice job on this one. The composition flows nicely, and the balance of light is great. I'm not familiar with this gate or the usual photos of it, but it's obvious that the greater context adds a lot to this scene.

Haven't been out and about for ages. Finally got out in the daylight with the dog this morning.

I think your lake is a little bigger than mine! From my uneducated eye I'd like to see those sail colours a bit brighter.
And it takes more than a good picture to piss me off:D

There was some lovely fog this morning, but sadly I was in the office from 7:30.

It's lake Ontario, the smallest of the Great Lakes :), though the land you see near the horizon is just a nearby island, not the opposite shore.

I went back and edited that shot, as it really is quite a bit on the underexposed side. It was part of a sequence I indented to make an HDR image from, but unfortunately my hand held shots did not end up aligning very well, particularly at the fast moving sailboat.

Another pano composite of three frames, with the tilt-shift lens shifted to its maximum of 12mm left and right. I can't notice any drop off of light to the edges that I have read so much about tilt-shift lenses having at their extreme shift. I did not apply any treatment on import or in compositing these pictures from the last few days. I do notice a slight barreling, but PTLens can be applied after import to rectify this, so that's not an issue for me.

I can understand why this lens ships without a lens-hood, it would be so wide and on such an angle that it would be a hindrance to actually stopping any excess sunlight or other light. It would catch the wind for starters... I had to deflect some sun flare for this one with my hand. Conveniently, I always seem to bring that with me! ;)

I wish I could but I'm home in freezing cold Toronto now and I wish I could have at the time. I was only away for one week and spent 4 days in San Francisco and three nights (two amazing full days) in Yosemite. But, without doubt I'll return.

The Ansel Adams gallery in Yosemite carries all the usual posters, greeting cards and calendars but while I was there, they had an exhibit and sale of Ansel Adams original prints. Original means there were signed and printed from the original negatives by the man himself...very cool!

I thought about picking-up one of my favourites "Clearing Winter Storm" but I was short $69,900 of the $70,000 asking price...maybe next time. :)

'Selfie" at Dead Horse Point, Utah

I will say this, Utah was one of the most consistently scenic states I travelled through on my 6 week road trip around western America (California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana). I do find it strange that, for people here in Britain, it really does not feature more in travel itineraries. It's a damn shame, as the scale and 'epicness' of this place is bloody impressive!

Oh the cowboy hat.... I arrived in Nevada (a lot of cowboy hats), and assumed most in America wore them.

I was wrong.....
