I went to the zoo today with my son. It was an overcast day and we got there when the zoo opened at 10am. The cheetahs were much more active than on other visits--exploring their confines rather than hidden. There are 4 females in the exhibit, all from the same litter. One of them jumped onto a rock near a viewing area.

I had a new lens on the camera for the day, the Nikon Z 24-70 f/2.8. Not my usual zoo lens (a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8). But when we left in the morning I thought we were going somewhere else and because it's a new lens I've been shooting it exclusively to test it out anyway. A good 24-70 is a useful lens for travel and walking about.

Playing around with some night shots I took last May in Death Valley . Taken with a Canon SL2 , Rokinon 10mm ,f2.8 (Probably)@25 seconds , ISO 6400 . Drove 8-9 miles from where I was staying to be away from any light . Sure was dark when I set up , but the images revealed light from Beatty , Nevada , over the mountains , probably 20 miles off . Image cleaned up via Topaz Denoise

Very nice. Must be a great feeling to be out there at that time of night. Splendid isolation.

Thanks for looking,
Ed

Really nice texture effect. Well done.

Thanks . Yeah , it's a big change from where I live ( just outside NYC in NJ). Lucky I can see the moon where I live , let alone stars .It's pretty amazing how well you can see by starlight out there , once your eyes get acclimated . It's real nice to be able to get away to a place where there's no cell service , no idiots blasting dreck from 900 watt car sound systems , none of the urban noise that one gets inured to . Death Valley is nearly the same in daytime . Its a big place and ,save for a few spots , is pretty empty.

"Pure Shores"

If you could have an untouched beach all to yourself, would you tell anyone about it?

It may not be Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi, but I feel Killantringan Shore and other beaches within the Rhinns of Galloway (SW Scotland) are arguably better as there are many evenings where you can be the only soul there - and I was lucky to have such good fortune earlier this year, especially on a night as pure as you see in this photograph.

Shot info: Fuji X-T2 with XF 16-55mm lens using Lee Filters 0.6 Neutral Density Soft Graduated filter and Formatt Hitech Firecrest 10 Stop Neutral Density filter.

30s / f11 / ISO 200
