Nikon D40
Sigma 10-20mm

I snapped this on the way home from a mountain run on Friday--the D40+lens are small and light enough to fit in my fanny pack. The RAW file was processed as a pseudo-HDR in Photomatix Pro.

It looks like it is a Wimberly head on the tripod as well. Big bucks right there!

MAJOR big bucks, because the full Wimberley gimbal head was mounted on a Sachtler tripod. Until that weekend I'd never seen a Sachtler before -- most of us use Gitzos -- and it is some nifty looking tripod! I looked it up on the internet and found that it comes at a price -- $$$$$!!!

The event that I was participating in was the 3rd Annual Nikon Cafe gathering -- and when we were all together at the duck pond that morning, it looked like a setup for a Nikon advert! LOL! Gitzo was the primary tripod of choice, too, so their products were well represented as well.

One guy had a 600mm lens -- now THAT was awesome!!

Here's a closer shot of one of the long lenses (I think it's the 600mm but am not sure):

Don't look at the pretty blue light.

I didn't take this photo actually, I gave my friend my camera to take photos of me welding, she uses flim so she didn't know what all the buttons did really, but I think I know what she did to get this, which I think is just such a cool photo.

General question

No photo on this one, I'll post one in a bit... but I have a question for all of you.

When you are just gadding about, looking for good shots, what are the general rules you use for taking pictures of people? I don't mean photographic, but social.

Do you ask first, then shoot, shoot first, then ask? Or something else? I'm talking about shots of just one or two people, not a group.

Figured I'd finally toss something up here. I have a better version of this that doesn't cut off the left, has a more balanced sky and has the wires cloned out, but I'm at work and happened to have this one on my flash drive.

both versions can be seen on my photosig page

Not sure of exif, but it's a 3 shot +-2EV HDR taken very quickly after work last fall.

Nikon D70, Nikkor 18-70mm @ 18mm (this is why I bought the Sigma 10-20, I hate not being able to get wide enough).
Great shot! I love the textures in the sky.

I had to help with an open house the other day at OIP&T. We had to set up a commercial demo to show people that were interested in going to school there what exactly we do. So what better than stopping motion with ice and water??

Oh, and those are fake ice cubes. Never would've guessed it huh?
