i know my next vehicle will be a truck.....

i have ran into too many situations where a truck has been a lifesaver

cars cant do jack ****.

buy a table/bookshelf/any larger item at say home depot or even something at a yard sale? good luck loading that into a car
need to haul stuff to the dump? good luck with a car
need to move things to storage? once again, have fun
need to lay down mulch or some other landscaping work?
need to tow a trailer?
need to pull friends cars out of snowbanks?
need to post signs?
need to move some bikes?
need a place to sleep? yes i have done that with a topper
going skiing with alot of friends and need a vehicle to place equipment?
going hunting/fishing? where you put the equipment, animals?

the list is endless why a truck is so much more useful than a car

these situations come up way to often that it makes a truck more than worthwhile

I don't think a truck is more useful than a car. I rarely run into those situations, so for me a truck is a useless gas guzzler that I don't need. I'd rather stick with my 30+ MPG car and borrow or rent a truck the rare times those situations come up. Everyone's situation is different, so the claim that a truck is more or less useless than a car is a moot point.

Sounds like your argument isn't whether the truck is more useful, it's whether or not you have use for it. A loaded 17" MBP is more "useful" than a 13" MB, yet, for me, the 13" MB is absolutely perfect. Same as my truck. Usefulness isn't a moot point, but arguing what vehicle is more or less useful for a stranger is definitely moot. As is trying to guess whether my hippie friend likes his granola with raisins or without. The added nutrients from raisins clearly makes the granola more "useful", buuuut I have a feeling my hippie friend takes his granola sans raisins. ;)

All in good fun.

I don't understand the attitude that "maybe in future I might buy large furniture so I need a truck NOW and at all times just in case that situation arises". Don't stores where you live offer delivery of large items?

Even if it cost money, that would likely be far less than the cost of getting poor MPG on every other journey.

If my car got stuck, I'd call the recovery company and they'd help me. That's why I pay them. I have no idea what you mean by "post signs" and I don't see why, with a vehicle as obtusely large as yours, you need a trailer as well.

I can say that I have had much success taking stuff to the dump in a car, both a Ford Mondeo and an MG ZS. Put some plastic sheeting down if it's dirty and put your things in the car.

If you are going to do landscaping work then again, it's not going to happen often. Personally, I'd be inclined to have a professional do it, and even if I was going to do it myself I would get the store where I was buying materials from to deliver it to me.

To me it is completely bizarre to see private individuals driving around in these things. Where I live, the only people who have "trucks" or "vans" are people who use them for their business. They might use them at other times too, but for someone who doesn't use the vehicle for their work to buy one just in case one of these situations ever arises is strange to me.

bow before my friend's '89 Skoda 125L

This is a Skoda 125L, AKA Estelle. I drove it last week on holidays in Slovakia. While I am grateful that there was a car I could use, I have to say this thing made me very nervous :)
The boot is in the front, and yes it opens sideways... it's RWD and the engine is in the back, as is most of the weight of the car or so it felt when I was overtaken by heavier vehicles at speed. Since most things on the motorway were heavier and faster, that uncomfortable feeling that the front was taking off happened a bit too often :p

There are people round near me who have massive "trucks" who park them on the pavements (not just 2 wheels up but 3/4 of the vehicle) because they're too wide to fit on the drives. If there's not proper justification people who buy these ridiculous things are just fashion lead morons...

Not everyone wants to pay everyone else to do things that can done themselves. Some people just prefer to do things the DIY style and a truck is much more well suited for that. There's absolutely no questions that a truck is more useful, although maybe not well suited for some.

By "massive", do you mean large and lifted, or just vehicles that are bigger than your Jetta or Smart car? I already explained the lifted vehicle thing - it's called motorsports, some people like to participate in them. Just because little cars get better gas mileage doesn't make them a better choice for everyone, there is more to consider when buying a vehicle. I personally get 11MPG in my Jeep and I'm fine with that, I've always drove vehicles with crappy gas mileage and allow for that in my budget.

Nobody's going to prove any points in this argument, we're not going to convince one another of anything. Point being: vehicles are personal preference, you can't convince everyone to buy a certain type of vehicle.

This is ridiculous. Of course you make valid points about not buying a truck. Can I just say that the #1 reason I bought a truck is because I WANTED A TRUCK. I didn't buy it just because I may get around to moving some furniture some day. All the other use I gain from this truck is an added benefit to the fact that I love to drive it. Puts a smile on my face every single time. Can you say that about your vehicle? Maybe you can, good for you. If not, then either vehicles are not your "Thing" or maybe you're just living a sad life.

Another point was made about people who are self-sufficient enough to not have to worry about relying on someone else to deliver things for them. I am definitely one of those Do-it-yourself people and I enjoy that. I very much enjoy working on my truck myself. I didn't even pay anyone to lift it, choosing instead to tackle the task with two of my friends over the course of a weekend. Saved me over $700 in install fees. I change my own oil along with most of the other fluids. I wash/wax/claybar/detail it myself. The money I save by doing my own work makes up for a bit of bad mileage, in my budget. If you can't understand it then that's fine. No one asked you to.

I wanted a truck since I was a little boy. I made a lot of money at my sales job one year and I paid cash for a secondhand vehicle. Is your vehicle paid for?

I've had enough of justifying my purchase to you people. I'm going fishing. Offroad.

Your money, your decision. You wanna buy me a car? Great, choose one for me. Until then I couldn't care less about your reasons for me buying a car.

What in the hell is wrong with you? And hell, to anyone bashing him for buying the truck that he is actually using to its intended purpose. My family has a Suburban because we need to tow a horse trailer, it's people hauling capabilities, and cargo. You can not tell me, " Just go rent a truck when you need that". Why? Because one winter day my mom was coming home from the hospital from having hip surgery. Unfortunately, it snowed with a mix of ice that night and the snow froze due to the ice. We were having a truck deliver a hospital bed so my mom could sleep on the first floor. The truck could not get up our drive way. The Suburban is the only vehicle we had that could get down there and carry all the pieces of the bed.

But, nope you people would want me to go out on the horrible roads to rent a truck so I could go back to get the bed to my house. Congrats, logic fail.

BTW, the Suburban isn't our daily driver. It sits out most of the year. Only gets used A) When one of our other vehicles is in service B) Long trips C) Towing D) carrying sails, lines, and other boat equipment to our boat or any other cargo we need to be hauled. E) When I am home from college and don't have my own car with me.

I recognize the fact most people don't use the trucks for their intended use. But, you should not call murder when someone actually does. Why do people buy Corvette's, Lambo's, etc when most of them will never see the track or ever get used for their intended purpose? Why isn't their a huge backlash against them? Oh that is right, because bashing SUV's and trucks is more popular today.....

Thanks for your posts! There are a few people here who think you must drive a matchbox on wheels that gets 102 MPG.

I don't get how you people think I am a tree hugging hippie I own a Nissan GTR that gets 21MPG highway on a good day and averages 16MPG its the very first post on page 16.

Proof a truck isn't always able to do things they should do and can be a waste for some.

It was that kind of truck( I think it was the T-Series which is the even bigger version of this type, but you get my point). The smaller Suburban was able to navigate the frozen snow covered driveway. How else would they transport multiple big items without that type of truck?

And people think you're a hippy because is due to this line.....

So you like to destroy the environment so you can occasionally haul something.

Why did you buy the GT-R? Do you intend to track it often? Why destroy the environment for the occasion you actually race the vehicle......

So why exactly do you need a truck as large as that and gets 15MPG?

oh wow, here you are criticizing someone with a truck due to mpgs and you drive a car that gets just about as bad:rolleyes:

your position makes no sense at all. now maybe if you were driving a car that got 40mpg all the time you might have a leg to stand on but nope......

Why do you think I am getting the Jetta. I barely ever drive the GTR because it doesn't do very well MPG wise. The thing I don't get is why do people get a large truck as their main car when it won't be used how it's supposed to be used. I'm all for people that use a truck like that everyday but the guy with the Titan even said he is a salesman so why does he need a large truck for everyday use.

seriously dude, get over it. you have your reasons for getting a jetta and he has reasons for getting a truck which he doesnt have to justify. it's his money, he does whatever he wants with it. why does it annoy you so much, is it because you're from Norcal? I only ask because my gf goes to Cal and ever since she's been there she's been on my ass about being green and wanting me to get rid of my suv for a yaris which is not gonna happen.

well,as I am from both sides (the green side and the trcuk side i'll interrupt your conversation):

*Everyone chooses a truck because HE WANTS,but I think it is stupid to choose it,when you won't use for the porposal (carrying things, offroad, etc),and you know it will waste more and Polute more..what now?these people will going to tell "well I am a jerk and I polute what I want!" oh yea..

*I am a 4x4 user (the lada niva 1.9d), although it does very good lts/100km (7/8) I could get a car and do 4/5lts/100km,I would be VERY GREEN, but you must get some satisfaction in life too..
For example,if I didn't have a 4x4 never ever I know some beautiful spots in my country, I would never date my gf in some beautiful spots by the moon, things like that.
So for truck users that don't use them correcty,go out, do some all terrain, know interesting spots, buy some new furniture and carry it :) or if you don't want to do that, trade your suv/truck whatever for a good car :p It will help on the milleage and on the world :p
For green user, well you can mantain your hybrid thingys that pollute as much as another car and even does bad mpg versus some ordinary diesels, but go enjoy some nature with a 4x4 too,be green not only "on the paper" :)
peace
