Xr is a great value. $50 less than an 8 Plus. Anybody complaining about pricing should just buy that.

I think it’s better for Apple’s bottom line that they stuck with the $999 pricing for the iPhone X since apparently it was selling well. Lowering the price of the flagship model might have indicated to the market that it wasn’t doing as well as expected.

$999 is the new normal for a flagship iPhone.
Except the XR is inferior to the 8 Plus in many ways. An inferior display and no dual cameras and an inferior 3D Touch.

I just opened their "Buy" page and my jaw dropped! $150 more for the 256GB model and $200 more (compared to the 256GB model) for the 512GB model! WOW! Apple has definitely prepared for the new tariffs! LOL

I think you’re right. Apple brag about record profits but the fact of the matter is they are noticing the drop in demand like anybody else. The whole market is noticing a drop in upgrades and it’s due to phones being good enough to last longer than the average contract length. People are simply keeping their phones longer.
They cannot have record profits and lower demand. It's unfortunate but $1000 is mid range tier st this point. $1300 is a premium smartphone.

I think the iPhone 8 will sell well just like the iPhone 7 did over the past 12 months. In some parts of Western Europe the 7 was the most popular upgrade due to its price and I don’t see the XR really altering that.

Thanks for pointing out about the display. Surprisingly, it is less than 1080p but the contrast and color accuracy are improved.

The iPhone Xs or Xs Max are still the clearly superior phones but I think the average consumer will be happy with the Xr since it includes most of the same functionality.

The global smartphone market has shrunk as widely reported. When you consider an iPhone was £600 in 2014 and in many cases it’s double that now, it’s not hard to see how the profits remain high with less demand.

I think the carriers had zero buying power when it came to Apple. Supply and demand. Apple will have offered them their small % off and that would be that.

I really don't believe that, nor do I think the evidence bears that out. iPhones sold for $499 (or $199 on contract) for years, despite added features. It wasn't until the $199 price point was gone that iPhones have gone up and up and up in price.

Carriers, especially carriers like Verizon, could have easily told Apple - "we will carry your phone at a $600 MSRP, not a penny more" and what would Apple have done? Sure, not sell on Verizon, which they did for a while until they couldn't ignore that market anymore and had to capitulate.

The problem about these prices is, that most people use their phones for longer time now and a flagship phone is no “must have” for these people. Means, the number of people who buy phones when these are brand new is getting smaller and smaller each year.

And these customers don’t look for flagships, so you can’t catch them with flagship pricing. I really don’t know why Apple still thinks a smartphone is something special, it’s just a thing, something you have anyways.

They don’t have anything new, just updates for what anybody already has in their pockets. They should focus on their cloud based services and security, the hardware must get cheaper to sell those.

How is Xr display inferior to 8/8 Plus?

iPhone 8 Plus: 1080 x 1920 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~401 ppi density)
iPhone Xr: 828 x 1792 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~326 ppi density)

So it's lower resolution, same ppi as the iPhone 8 but at a much larger size. That said I think it's still a good enough resolution that you won't notice pixels. Remains to be seen how it performs otherwise.

The display resolution is low. It has the same PPI as the smaller iPhone 8. The 8 Plus had a noticeably sharper display than the smaller 8. It also has a poor man's 3D Touch. There is no reason to get the XR over the 8 Plus unless you really want the new design or FaceID.
Thank you. I just looked it up. You are right and DAM&^%.. I tried the 8 but could tell a difference in the video quality of the 8 and 8 Plus.

Hell, I don’t even like FID... so that nukes the Xr for me... even though it is named after my first ever dirt bike.

You were also likely on a contract back then that subsidized the full price of the phone into your cell phone bill.

The iPhone 5 was $649 SIM-free. This new phone is $1099, assuming you're looking at the Xs Max.

The Xs Max is $200 cheaper than two iPhone 5's. Pretty close to me.

itsmilo's point stands.

Agree. :) I'm switching from a iPhone 6s (battery life is really bad on my 6s) to a iPhone 8 tomorrow. For my needs the iPhone 8 will be powerful enough. I get a better camera, faster performance, longer battery life and more. The performance differences are not really THAT huge and even 64GB will be enough storage for me. My big storage is my 8TB NAS so I don't need 256GB or even 512GB on a phone!

I was just joking. The actual price of the procedure is $3200. The insurance paid $1700 and I am responsible for $500. Not a bad profit for a procedure that took 7 minutes.
Okay okay lol, that sounds way more in line with what I paid.

The prices have shifted to a higher plane. Get ready to pay even more next year :)
I am expecting a $30-50 price hike every year from here on out.

I do wonder though, if the iPhone is taking the space previously occupied by laptops etc., at some point the yearly refresh cycle will slow too, you'd think...
