The display resolution is low. It has the same PPI as the smaller iPhone 8. The 8 Plus had a noticeably sharper display than the smaller 8. It also has a poor man's 3D Touch. There is no reason to get the XR over the 8 Plus unless you really want the new design or FaceID.

The problem about these prices is, that most people use their phones for longer time now and a flagship phone is no “must have” for these people. Means, the number of people who buy phones when these are brand new is getting smaller and smaller each year.

And these customers don’t look for flagships, so you can’t catch them with flagship pricing. I really don’t know why Apple still thinks a smartphone is something special, it’s just a thing, something you have anyways.

You could say Apple is returning to their status symbol level where only the wealthy buy iPhones and the poorer go to debt by paying even more in monthly payments. For a lot of people their smartphone is their most important tool for communication and access to the Internet so they are willing to pay as much as a midrange laptop for one.

Smartphones have become a commodity where even cheap phones like the upcoming Pocophone are pretty good and a few years old flagships run everything perfectly smooth and take decent photos. It gets harder to try to introduce new things there.

I've been on my current phone for 3 years now and have no immediate need to change. I'll pick up an iPhone XS nevertheless even if it isn't exactly a smart purchase. I hope to get at least the same use out of it.

again, 1,100$ for a phone (basic configuration...). For a device that in 2 years will be slow and unusable...
EXACTLY! That's how I view it too. If it lasted 5 years then great but being Apple it doesn't. My MacBook was USELESS after 3 years with OS updates and my first iPhone at the time, the 4s was terrible from iOS7 upwards - that's just 2 years of use at the time!
Apple's greed is pure sickening. It's fast becoming a very obese company. But, there's a lot of silly people out there that 'must have' the latest thing.

They cannot have record profits and lower demand. It's unfortunate but $1000 is mid range tier st this point. $1300 is a premium smartphone.

That's not even "premium". That's just the cost of extra storage. Other than that the phones are exactly the same.
[doublepost=1536784734][/doublepost]At $17/gigabyte, the XsMax is a straight ripoff.

These won’t be slow.
Last phones that had issues where the 6’s. Especially 6+. These phones will be fine 5 years from now.

But that's shallow and you'll soon grow out of that when you're a little older and wiser, then you'll realise the real prices.

Eventually old man debt catches up with everyone. There are more important things in life that demand our limited resources (namely money in a personal sense) that $999 for a phone every year is just ridiculous. In fact, it's laughable.

Let me start by saying that Apple has the right to charge whatever price they want. That said I was all in until I found out the model I wanted (XSMax256) was $150 more than I was willing to pay. I will keep my iPhone 8 Plus 256 for at least one more year. It will be the first time ever that I have not upgraded after one year. I have been buying since the iPhone 3.

I am expecting a $30-50 price hike every year from here on out.

I do wonder though, if the iPhone is taking the space previously occupied by laptops etc., at some point the yearly refresh cycle will slow too, you'd think...
It is taking that space (the last time i upgraded my laptop was 5 years back)..

The fact is iphone refresh cycle doesn't slow that much because a lot of people still covet iphones and buy them even when they don't need the new models...

With prices like this. What are the chances of me walking into a store and getting one without having to pre order :)

You're right about that. I don't need the new model, but I want it. My choice.

I agree. My phone I connect it and dump it in the center console. Get home, put it on the countertop and never look at it again until it's time for bed. Then again I dont have any type of Social Media. Those who use Social Media every minute get the most benefit out of these type of phones.

All due respect, that's simply not true. I work in IT and this phone is my lifeline for my career. I can remote to any PC/server in the entire organization, check email, run scripts, fix issues of nearly any sort, etc. If I get a call from one of our automated notifications at 3am because a server went down, I don't even have to get out of bed anymore to get another device. I can answer the call, log in to the server, fix the problem, email/text/call anyone else involved, and all of this can be done on the same device.

Yes, the cost is almost ridiculous... but this device is a massive convenience for me and it's definitely not for Social Media.

I agree concerning the 64 GB base storage, that's really not enough for a $1K+ smartphone of any kind. Reminds me of the 16 GB iPhone 6s Plus in 2015, but apparently by today's standards that was a low-cost smartphone...

The 256 GB model though, I foresee that one still being usable even four years from now. Not trying to justify $1,250 for a smartphone, but longevity is something to consider.
It will need to be replaced when 5g drops

$1099 XS Max
Trade in my X $525
Cost upgrade ~ $575 or $50/month

Unless I keep it more than a year.

This is me. Exactly. I have owned every model except the X and C

This is exactly how free enterprise works. Except for food and shelter we need almost nothing. It’s all about want. I want the new phone but do not want to spend $150 more than expected. Thus I have a tough choice. That is not Apple‘s problem but mine. Free enterprise that has given us one of the greatest countries in the world!

Oh absolutely. As they cram more and more tech in these things, and, culturally, as phones become the sole computer for most people (already happening) I can see further up-market shifts. I fully expect $2,000 iPhones in the next 10 years.

This is the second time in a row we've been fooled by lower price rumors.

Remember the 2018 iPad rumors about $269? Didn't happen, came out at the same price.
Same as X / Xs.

Just something to keep in mind next time rumors of price-drops pop up.

Bingo.
I can afford it. It’s only $15/month more on the AUP than I pay today. .. there is just something about that price. Maybe I give in. Maybe I don’t... but I have gone from being 100% getting the XSM before today to about 25% today.

Well the XR is £799 for 128GB, now the X on the inevitable sell off could be £850 or less.. although that’ll be the 64GB model, it’s screen will be much better, and dual lens camera, not much else between it.

Kinda don’t know what to do, will have to have a play in the Apple Store I think, but a discounted X does seem like a better buy currently.
